This invention relates to head rest devices and more particularly to a head rest device for use as a chair attachment in beauty shops, dental oflices, barber shops, and the like.

A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved head rest attachment which is very simple in construction, comfortable in use and easy to adjust to a desired position. Y

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved head rest attachment for beauty shops, barber shops, dentists offices, and the like, which is inexpensive to manufacture, pleasing in appearance and which provides a maximum de gree of comfort to the person whose head is supported therein during the beauty operation, tonsorial operation, dental operation or other similar treatment being performed on the person.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying l drawings, wherein:

Figure 4 is a cross-sectional View taken on line 4 4 of Figure 3, but showing one of the side members of the head rest attachment in detached relation with respect to the main body of the attachment.

Referring to the drawings, I I designates a conventional beauticians chair, barbers chair, dentists chair, or the like. Secured to the back of the chair I I is a bracket member I2 formed with a vertical recess I3. Extending through the upper portion of the recess I3 and threadedly engaging the frame of chair I I is a thumbscrew I4. Removably positioned in recess I3 and secured therein by thumbscrew I 4 is a vertical support member I5 formed with vertically spaced openings IB. Thumbscrew I4 passes through a selected opening I6 in accordance with a desired position of vertical adjustment of the support member I5 with respect to the top of the back of chair Il.

The upper portion I1 of support member I5 is substantially greater in Width than the main portion thereof and is arcuate in shape, Secured to the inner surface of portion Il is a suitably curved channel member I8 formed with a hollow rib portion I9 at its lower margin. Overlying channel member I8 and the remainder Qi portion Il is a layer of suitable padding 25 and overlying the padding 2i) is a cover of leather or suitable fabric 2|, glued or otherwise secured to the portion Il. Secured to the top edges of the channel member I8 and portion Il' at the center lof said portion Il is a rounded head member 22 of hard rubber `or the like.

Slidably and adjustably received vin the .tubular recesses defined by chan-nel member I8 and upper portion I'I at each `side cf said upper porftion are the end portions of rigid arcuate side support members 23. The lower edge portions of members 23 are inwardly curved, as shown at 24 to slidably fit within the hollow rib I9, The members 23 carry suitable padding material 25 at their inner surfaces and overlying the padding material 25 of each member 23 is an inside cover 2G of leather or suitable fabric, suitably secured to the top and bottom edges of the member. Secured to the top edges of the members are rounded head elements 21, 21 of hard rubber or the like.

The padding and head elements terminate short of the inner ends of the members 23, thereby dening exposed tongue portions 28, 28 at said inner ends adapted to fit inside the respective end portions of the channel I8. As shown in Figure 3, the tongue portions 28, 28 support the side elements of the head rest and may be adjusted to vary the size and shape of the head rest in accordance with the contour of the face and head of the person using same. The contour of the head rest is generally oval and the rear portion thereof is adapted to support the lower rear portion of the persons head while the side portions of the head rest underlie and support the lower portions of the persons jaw and chin. By suitably adjusting the height of the head rest with respect to the top of the chair back and by adjusting the side portions of the head rest, a position of maximum comfort may be obtained for supporting the head of an individual while the required operation is performed on the individual.

When the head rest is not in use it may be readily removed from the chair by disengaging the thumbscrew I4 from the chair frame.

The support Il, channel I8 and side support members 23 are preferably made of light metal such as aluminum, but may also be formed of plastic material. The padding l20 and 25 is preferably of sponge rubber.

While a specific embodiment of a head rest attachment has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various @Qdillations within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A head rest attachment comprising a support member adapted to be secured to the top of a chair back, said support member having an enlarged arcuately curved top portion defining a concave support for the rear lower portion of a persons head, a channel member mounted on the concave surface of said top portion and defining a tubular guide way extending from side to side of said top portion, the web portion of said channel member having an outward projection which defines a hollow rib coextensve therewith, padding means mounted on the concave surface of said top portion and overlying said channel member, and a pair of arcuately curved padded side members, each side member having an end portion slidably fitting into an end of said guide way and including a flange at the bottom which is received in said hollow rib, the side members and said support member dening a generally oval supporting ring adapted to conform to the peripheral contour of and underlie a persons jaws when the lower rear portion of the persons head is positioned on said concave support.

2. A head rest attachment comprising a support member adapted to be secured to the top of a chair back, said support member having an enlarged arcuately curved top portion delining a concave support for the rear lower portion of a persons head, a channel member mounted on the concave surface of said top portion and dening a tubular guideway extending from side to side of said top portion, said channel member having an outward projection which denes a hollow rib coextensive therewith, and a pair of arcuately curved side members, each side member having an end portion slidably tting into an end of said guideway and including a bottom flange slidably received in said hollow rib, the side members and said support member defining a generally oval supporting ring.
