i ,7 1 This invention relates to new and useful improvements in liner pullers, and the primaryob- 'ject of the present invention is to provide a device for removing sleeves or linings from pump cylinders or the like of various diameters.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a liner puller including novel and improved gripping jaws so designed as to frictionally grip the lining of a cylindrical pump as the puller is extended through the pump cas- A further object of the present invention is to provide a pump lining extractor embodying novel and improved means for actuating the gripping jaws thereof to uniformly engage the inner periphery of a lining without slipping movement relative thereto.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a liner puller that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal fragmentary vertical sectional view through a cylinder, such as a pump cylinder, and showing the present invention installed therein for pulling a lining from the pump cylinder;
Figure 2 is a transverse horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of one of the gripping jaws used in conjunction with the present invention, and with parts broken away and shown in section;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the piston rod engaging member used in conjunction with the present invention; and V Figure 5 is an elevational view of the present liner puller in slightly modified form, and with parts thereof broken away and shown in section.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein, for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral l0 represents a substantially cylindrical body open at both ends and provided with a fixed bearing plate l2 intermediate its ends, upon one face of whic there is supported the base portion iii of a hydraulic jack [4.
V HutchinsoniKans. I v v 1 Application November 20,1947, Serial No. 787,170
'1 Claim. (61.29-283) The movable shaft or rod it of this jack i4 is connected to a base member ll having a plurality of spaced ears or fulcrums I8 that pivotally engage the inner terminal 20 of a group of radial arms 22, which are circumferentially spaced relative to each other.
The numeral 24' represents a plurality of armate jaws each having an outer toothed surface 26, an angular flanged portion 28, and in integral shank portion 30 fixedly carried by the flange 28 that is provided with an eye portion 32. The eye portions 32 of the shanks 30 are provided with central slots 34 that pivotally engage the free terminal 36 of arms 22.
Circumferentially spaced, longitudinal slots 38 are provided in one end of the body In and these slots oppose the openings between pairs of spaced ears or retaining plates 40 that are rigidly secured to the inner periphery of the body In and which are provided with opposed apertures 42 that pivotally engage the inner terminals 44 of a plurality of radial links or connecting arms 46. The outer terminals 48 of these arms 46 are bifurcated to pivotally engage the eye portions 32 of the jaws 24.
In practical use of the device, the lower portion or chamber 50 provided in the body Ill engages the end 52 of a piston rod 54 that is movable or workable in the lining 56 of a pump casing or cylinder '58, and the jack I4 is operatively connected by a supply hose 59 to a hydraulic jack pump 60, so that by actuating the lever 62 of the pump- 60, the base member I! will spread relative to the body Ill and the jaws 24 and arms 22 will pivot downwardly to frictionally engage the inner periphery of the lining 56 to remove the lining from the casing 58 as the piston rod 54 is actuated to force the body I0 through the pump cas- Reference is now directed to Figure 5, wherein there is disclosed the present liner puller in slightly modified form. In this embodiment, the hydraulic jack [4 is removed from its position between the base member I! and the body l0 and is replaced by a coil spring 60 that is fixedly secured at its opposite terminals 62 and 64 to the base and the bearing plate l2, respectively. In this instance, as the body 10 is forced through the pump lining by the piston rod 54, the spring 60 will urge the base outwardly from the body In to pivot arms 22 and jaws 124 downwardly, thus causing the jaws 24 to frictionally grip the inner periphery of the pump lining to remove the same from the pump casing, as the piston rod forces the body I 0 through the pump lining.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A lining extracting device comprising an open ended tubular support provided with a fixed transverse bearing plate intermediate its ends, said support also having a plurality of circum ferentially spaced slots at one end, arms having rapper and wiv s and Human t e ow r a n rtiqns of said arms being received in said slots to! wa in mov m nt and r ve ed a d pent, va g e 9 e eumfe snfi ll Spaced pp Jaws having per eee th up er n Po tions of said arms being pivoted to the shanl portions of said jaws, a base member spaced above said support, links terminally pivoted to said base member and the shank portions of said jaws, and a jack disposed on said transverse bearing plate between said support and said base, said jack having a movable shaft abutting said base member.
