(ModeL) A. J. MILLER.-
ADJUSTABLE BOX FOE COTTON GINS.
No. 248,776. Patent-ed Oct. 25,1881.

TATES ArnNr FFICE.
ADJUSTABLE BOX FOR COTTON-GINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,776, dated October 25, 1881.
Application filed July 9, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. MILLER, of Patterson, in the county of Pierce and State of Georgia, haveinvented certain useful Improvements in Adjustable Boxes for Got-ton Gins and other Machines, of which the tollow ing is a specification.
My improved box is specially for application to the McCarthy cotton-gin, but can be readily applied to any gin or other machine wherein a striking or shaking motion is used.
The improvement relates to the connections between the vibrating stick or rod and its operating shaft; and the invention consists in an adjustable box constructed to hold the stick securely, prevent any down or sidewise movement, and to allow compensation for wear. The construction is a flanged box provided with gibs for receiving the end of the stick, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation of the box, showing the stick connected. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section at right angles to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a crossscction on line or .90 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A is the box, consisting of two half-portions, a a, of brass or other suitable metal. The lower brass, a, is fitted with side plates, 1) b, projecting as flanges, which sustain the brass a between them, and through apertures in the flanges wcdgesc o are fitted above the brass a. Above the wedges, andfitted to slide, isaflanged plate or block, (I, which, with the ends of the plates or flanges 1), forms a box for receiving the end of the stick or rod.
B is the stick or rod, held between the plates 1) by a eross-bolt or pin, 6, with its end between (ModeL) the flanges of block d, so that it is rigidly retained without the possibility of endwise or side movement, and so as to prevent it from being split. To strengthen the stick further and prevent it from wearing around the bolt 6, it is fitted with cross bolts or pins ffabove and below the bolt 0, and crosswise of the same. The wedges 0 take against block (I at the under side and upon the upper side of the brass a, so that they serve to retain the block at in contact with the end of the stick and the brasses tight upon the shaft.
Any wear in the box A can be readily taken up, and a solid resistance is furnished against the end thrust of the rod.
In use with a gin the box A is placed upon the crank-shaft and the stick B attached to the stripper in the usual manner, for the purpose ot'givingthestripperarapidreciprocation. The difficulty heretofore has been to insure uniform movement, so that at every revolution of the shaft the stripper would strike the same distance. W'ith my improved connections that diffieulty is remedied and the proper operation of the gin insured.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the stick B and the upper brass, a, of the box A, of the lower brass, (1, provided with the side plates, 1), the wedges 0, the flanged block (I, and the bolt 6, whereby theblock is held in contact with the end of the stick and the brasses tight upon the shaft, substantially as herein shown and described.
