Description

Nov. 1, 1949 M.- BRANDY'S V GARMENT BLOCKING AND DRYING DEVICE Filed March 29, 1946 INVENTOR.
Patented Nov. 1, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT BLOCKING AND DRYING DEVICE Matthew Brandys, Chicago, Ill.
Application March 29, 1946, Serial No. 658,144
3 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to garment blocking and drying devices of the type having a pair of complementary sections, the side portions of which generally conform to the outline of the garment to be blocked or dried, and which sections are extensible on a horizontal plane for the purpose of making the device adaptable for use in connection with various sizes of garments.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide in a garment blocking and drying device of the character hereinabove indicated, the telescopic means wherein the horizontal wire members of the device may be slidably fitted for extending the device horizontally in order to make the same conform to various sizes of garments.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision in connection with the telescopic means aforesaid of suitable camming device, such as disclosed in my co-pending application filed February 7, 1946, Serial No. 646,015, for the purpose of rigidly locking horizontal portions of the blocking and drying device when the same are extended on horizontal plane to maintain two complementary sections of the device in their rigid, adjusted positions.
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Fig. 1 is a plan elevational view of the present device;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevational view of the adjusting means for horizontal wire members of the device, with the cooperating camming device for maintaining the extended wire members in a rigid adjusted position;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view through a horizontal wire member, showing the camming device in an edge elevation when in an operative position; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the present drawing there is shown therein a blocking and drying device,
generally indicated by I0, and which embodies a I sweater or the like, while the lower portions of which are straight and parallel.
The ends of one section II are bent substantially at right angles to the body of said section II for defining wire stubs I2. Intermediately of two ends of that last named section II wire stub I3 is soldered or otherwise rigidly affixed thereto. Said stubs I2 and I3 are in a mutual parallel relation, and in a transverse position with respect to their cooperating section II. Inserted upon the free end of each stub I2 and I3 and there soldered, crimped or otherwise rigidly affixed, is an oblong tubular member I4.
Alined with said stubs I2, and extending from the opposite section II are wire members I5, which are defined by bending horizontally the end portions of said last named section II. Cooperating with stub I3 is wire member I6, soldered or otherwise rigidly affixed to the body portion of said last named section I I, and oppositely to stub I3. Wire members I5 and I6 are comparatively long and enter by their free ends tubular members I4 and when two sections II are shifted towards each other the ends of stubs I2 and I3 contact and bear against the free ends of wire members I5 and I6, respectively.
Integrally formed with the free ends of tubular members I4, and extending in a parallel relation from diametrically opposite points of the periphery thereof, is a pair of spaced leaves I'I. Receivable within each pair of said leaves II is a pair of camming plates I8 having camming edges I9. Said camming plates l8 are formed out of a single blank, as disclosed in my said co-pendingapplication, so that along one side edge thereof, said camming plates I8 are joined by a U-shaped edge portion 20 of the blank. Integrally formed with said camming plates I8 is handle 2|.
Extended through said leaves I1 and camming plates I8 is rivet 22, providing a pivot upon which camming plates I8 and handle 2| may be angularly swung into an operative position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, or into an inoperative position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. When the cam is in an operative position, edges I9 enter into the corners defined by the periphery of wires I5 or I6, and theadjacent face portions of leaves I'I. By virtue of this operation said edges I9 enter into a strong frictional contact with said wires I5 and I6 and bear against them in a transverse direction for the purpose of clamping the same to the adjacent body portions of said tubular members I4 oppositely disposed to said leaves IT. This operation will lock said wires I5 and I6 seen that when all cams are open, with plates [8 out of engagement with wire members l or l6, said wire members and I6 may then be shifted within their tubular members I4 for shifting sections ll away from each other to a number of adjusted positions as indicated by dotted lines in' Fig. 1. When said sections II were shifted away from each other, and the same made to conform to the particular desired size of any given garment, then handles 2| of the cams are swung into vertical positions for engaging wire members IE or I6 by cam plates l8 as aforesaid, formaintaining said wire members I5 or H5 in a rigid locked position with respect to their respective tubular members M and thereby maintain sections II in a rigid adjusted position,
While there is described herein a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is never= theless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
1. A garment blocking and drying device com prising a pair of complementary sections, each of said sections being of a contour substantially conforming to the garment when the same is placed upon said sections, a plurality of wire members extending substantially at right angles from the body portion of each section, said wire members in the two sections being in a longi-' tudinal alinement, tubular members carried by wire members in one of said sections, the wire members in the other of said sections entering said tubular members for sliding movement therewithin for adjusting the distance between said sections for substantially conforming the same to the width of the garment thereon, and locking means carried by said tubular members for en gaging said last named wire members for maintaining the same in an adjusted position.
2. A garment blocking and drying device comprising a pair of complementary sections, a plurality of wire members extending substantially at right angles from the body portion of each section, said wire members in the two sections being in a longitudinal alinement, tubular members carried by wire members in one of said sections, the wire members in the other of said sections entering said tubular members for sliding movement therewithin, a pair of leaves rigidly formed with and extending from each of said tubular members, and a cam mechanism pivoted within said leaves for selectively rigidly engaging said last flamed wire members for maintaining the same in an adjusted position.
3. A garment blocking and drying device comprising a pair of complementary sections, a plurality of wire members extending substantially at right angles from the body portion of each sectioi'i, said wire members in the two sections being in a longitudinal alinement, tubular members carried by wire members in one of said sections, the wire members in the other of said sections entering said tubular members for sliding movement therewithin, a pair of leaves rigidly formed with and extending from each of said tubular members, and a cam mechanism pivoted within said leaves for selectively rigidly engaging said last named wire members for maintaining the same in an adjusted position, said cam meeha nism including a pair of plates entering the cor ners defined by the peripheries of said last named wire members and said leaves for frictionally engaging said last named wire members for clamp ing the same to the body portions of said tubular members oppositely disposed to said leaves.
