1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to an iron rest or sup port which is particularly adapted for use in supporting an electric iron.
The primary object of the present invention 1s to provide a new and improved and relatively simple and inexpensive iron rest for electric irons.
An additional object of the invention is to provide an electric iron rest embodying a base or pad of non-combustible heat-insulating material such, for example, as felted asbestos, a sheet metal top having formed integrally therewith a marginal edge portion or bead for preventing the iron from slipping off the said sheet metal top, and novel fastening elements formed integral with the sheet metal top for securely fastening the base or pad of non-combustible heat-insulat ing material to the overlying sheet metal top.
Other and further objects of the present invention will be apparent from the following description and claims and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing which, by way of illustration, shows a, preferred embodiment of the present invention and the principle thereof and what I now consider to be the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle. Other embodiments of the invention embodying the same or equivalent principle may be used and structural changes may be made as desired by those skilled in the art without departing from the present invention and the purview of the appended claim.

A preferred embodiment of the new electric iron rest is illustrated in the drawing, wherein it is generally indicated at I Il, and comprises a suitably shaped sheet metal top II embodying a substantially uniplanar nat body I1 and a correspondingly shaped base l2 of non-combustible heat-insulating material such, for example, as felted asbestos formed and compressed into sheet or board form and out to the desired shape.
The sheet metal top I l has an upraised retaining bead I3 formed therein and extending around its marginal edge above the plane of the nat, unplanar body l1 of the top II and this retaining bead I3 has an outside wall I4 which extends downwardly part way over the outside marginal edge of the base l2.
In order to securely fasten the base I2 to the top II I provide, at suitably spaced intervals around the sheet metal top II, a plurality of fastening elements I8. Each of the fastening elements I8 includes a depending arm I5 which is formed as an integral downward extension of the outside wall I 4 of the sheet metal top II. Each of the fastening elements I8 also includes an inwardly and horizontally extending tongue I6 which is formed as an integral extension of the corresponding one of the depending arms I5. As shown in the drawing, these fastening tongues I6 extend under the base I2 and securely fasten the base I2 and the top I I together as a unit so that they may be readily handled and used as a unit and without separation.
In the manufacture of the new electric iron rest the sheet metal top Il may be formed of a suitable quality of sheet metal stock, such, for example, as sheet steel, of suitable gauge, and in any suitable manner, as by means of a stamping operation, and so that the sheet metal top Il embodies the fastening elements I8-I5-I6 formed as integral parts thereof. The thus formed sheet may Abe provided in any suitable manner, as by means of a suitable forming die, with the retaining bead I3. The top II and base I2 may then be assembled with the base I2 arranged within the marginal edge of the outer wall I4 of the retaining bead I3, whereupon the tongues I6 of the fastening elements I8 may be bent inwardly, in any suitable manner, so as to underlie the base I2 in substantially parallel relation thereto, thus completing the assembly of the top Il and base I2 and the fastening of these parts together into a unitary structure.
In the use of the new electric iron rest the same may be supported upon an ironing board, or other suitable support, and when so supported an electric iron may be placed upon the substantially flat and uniplanar body Il' of the sheet metal top upon which it will be retained by the upright retaining bead I4 which provides a marginal retaining wall around the body I1 of the sheet metal top Il so as to retain the electric iron against sliding 01T the same.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, that the present invention provides a new and improved and relatively simple and inexpensive electric iron rest having the advantages and desirable characteristics, and accomplishing its intended objects, including those hereinbefore pointed out and others which are inherent in the invention.
I claim:
An electric iron rest comprised of an ovalshaped sheet metal top including a substantially flat, uniplanar body having an upraised bead formed integral therewith and extending around its marginal edge above the plane of the said substantially llat, uniplanar body of the top and providing a marginal retaining wall stherearound, a substantially at oval-shaped base of non-combustible heat-insulating material disposed below the said top within the said Outer marginal Wall thereof and having the said substantially 'flat and uniplanar body of the said oval-shaped sheet metal top resting thereon, and means formedintegrally with and as a part.: of the-r saideova1- shaped sheet metal top for fastening the said oval-shaped base and the said Oval-sh'apedsheet Y metal top together intera unitary structure, said {fasteningfmeans consisting off aplurality of relatively narrow spacedzmetal' fastening-elements .formed integral with= and as/,fextensions of- 'the saidouter'wall oft the said bead and arranged --at intervals therearound; each of the said fasten- .,ing elements including aportion extendingy in- REFERENCES CITED 'The' following references are of record in the r' le -of this Apatent:
