2 Claims.' (Cl. 312-419) This invention relates to display stands, and more particularly to a type employed upon the counters of stores or business places for attractively and artistically displaying merchandise, such as articles of jewelry, watches, cosmetics or other items.

An object of the present invention is to provide a display stand of the character above mentioned which will be compact, sturdy and attractive in appearance and enhance the saleability of the displayed articles by not only attracting the atten tion of the customers thereto, but by displaying the goods in such a manner as to show the same ofi to best advantage.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device which will be useful for displaying merchandise, and will also serve as a container for a supply of the goods to be sold.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a display stand of substantial construction and of long useful life, but one in which the several parts may be separated and placed together in such a manner as to facilitate the packing and shipping of the display stand.

More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of a display stand provided with a fiat, relatively thick and hollow base member, from the top of which arises a plurality of supporting ears, the inner faces of which are provided with inclined grooves to receive lugs carried by a display tray, the latter, when its lugs are entered into the grooves, being supported in an inclined position so that goods mounted on or in the tray are rendered readily visible to the customer through a glass pane provided in the front of the tray.

The invention also contemplates the provision of a sliding drawer housed within the hollow base of the stand, said drawer being accessible at the rear of the base and serving as a container or holder for a supply of the goods on display.

These and other objects are attained by the invention, a more particular description of which will hereinafter appear and be set forth in the claims appended hereto.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein an illustrative embodiment of the invention is disclosed, Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the display stand, constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the same; Fig. 3 is a view of one end of the display stand, with parts in section, to show the manner in which one of the lugs on the display tray engages with the groove on the supporting ear; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the display stand, taken on the line 4--4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 5 is a front view of a portion of the display tray; Fig. 6 is an end view of the display tray; Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the display stand, on a reduced scale; Fig. 8 is a rear elevational View of the display stand, also on a reduced scale, and Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the base of the display stand, with parts broken away, and other parts shown in section, to disclose construction.

Referring to the drawings, I indicates the base member of the display stand, the same being preferably made of wood, although it can be satisfactorily made of plastic material or metal, and the same consists, in the form of the invention shown, of a fiat, hollow, relatively thick member, having a rounded front end 2 and provided with a top 3, bottom 4 and

5 and 6. The back of the base member I is open to allow for the inward and outward sliding movement of a drawer I9 normally housed within the base member I and slid in and out of the base member I by grasping the knob 2|.

Rising from the top 3 of the base I is a pair of triangular ears I and 8 which are spaced apart the required distance to enable a merchandise display tray I2 to be supported between them. The inner faces of the ears I and 8 are each provided with an inclined groove 9 and each of the side walls of the tray I2 is provided, near its forward, rounded end IT, with a laterally extending lug III or II, these lugs being adapted to slide downwardly into the grooves 9. To place the tray in its angular display position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2', 4, 7 and 8, the lugs I0 and II are slid downwardly in the angular or inclined slots 9 until the inclined surface I8, provided near the front end I I of the tray I 2, rests firmly against the upper surface of the top 3 of the base I. When the tray I2 is so supported, namely, by the surface I8 resting against the top of the base I, and by the lugs I0 and II fitting within the inclined grooves 9, said tray will be securely and rigidly maintained in an inclined position so that the merchandise held within its compartment or chamber I3 will be displayed to best advantage.

The display compartment I3 of the tray I2 is closed at the top by a glass or other transparent pane I6. The tray may be lined or internally padded, or otherwise interiorly decorated to suit the articles to be displayed. The bottom display surface of the tray I2 is shown at I 9a and may be provided with any suitable elements for fastening or mounting the articles to be displayed upon it. The bottom I4 is removable from the rear of the tray, the same being removably held in place by means of the pivoted fingers l5 which can be pivotally shifted to one side whenever desired, to allow the bottom M of the tray to be lowered and separated from the body of the tray to facilitate the removal of any articles which may be attached to the bottom, or else to permit articles to be placed in position upon it.

From the foregoing, the operation of the improved display stand will be readily understood.

The packing and shipping of the stand can be facilitated by removing the tray from its engagement with the grooves 9 and placing it fiatwisely on the top 3 of the base member I between the two ears I and 8. When the parts are in such position, the display stand can then be packed and shipped in a relatively small, rectangular container. The setting up of the device into display position is merely a matter of sliding the lugs 10 and II down into the grooves 9 until the angular surface l8 on the tray comes into contact with the upper surface of the top 3 of the base I. This places the tray in an inclined display position as heretofore described, the tray being then rigidly and firmly held in such, a position. As observed in Fig. 2, the rounded forward end I! of the tray, cooperating with the rounded front edge 2 of the base, greatly enhances the appearance of the display stand as viewed from the front by the customer and tends to artistically display the contents of the tray in a modern manner.

As previously stated, the interior of the base member I is hollow, thus providing a chamber 29 in which the drawer I9 is housed, said drawer being available only from the rear of the stand and being thus concealed or hidden from the view of the customer. The drawer can be used for holding a supply of the articles on display in the tray 12, or for parts or accessories for use in connection with such articles, or for various other articles according to the mechandise that is on display and for sale.

While I have described one embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that the same is not to be restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claims.

I have herein shown the display stand as being of a certain design and proportions, but it will be apparent that changes therein may be readily made to meet various requirements. While the elements I and I2 are designed for cooperative relationship, the separable manner in which the same are connected would permit independent use of the same when desired. As an example, the tray [2 might be provided with a supporting prop or easel at the back by means of which it can be supported in a display position when separated from the base, thus permitting the tray to be capable of dual display usage.

What I claim is:

1. A display stand of the character described having a merchandise-containing chamber in the form of a. flat, hollow base member, said base member being closed at the front and open at the rear, a merchandise drawer mounted in said base member and slidable out through the open back of the same, a merchandise-display tray supported in an inclined position on top of the base member, said tray having an inclined forward end portion for rest upon the top of the base member and lugs extending laterally from its sides, a pair of supports arising from the top of the base member, each support having an opentop inclined groove formed in its inner face only, said grooves terminating at the top of the base member, the lugs on the tray being received in said grooves to thereby support the tray in its inclined position.

2. A display stand of the character described comprising, a flat, hollow base member closed at its forward end and open at the rear, a slidable drawer contained within the base member and slidable out of the open back of the base member, a pair of spaced ears arising from the top of the base member, each ear having an inner face provided with an inclined groove, a display tray having a rounded forward end and an inclined surface extending rearwardly from said end and adapted to rest on top of the upper surface of the base member, said tray having a. lug projecting from each of its opposite sides, said lugs fitting into the grooves in the ears, the tray being held in an inclined position by such engagement of the lugs and grooves, and while in such inclined position, the inclined surface of the tray being brought to rest upon the top surface of the base member between the ears thereon.
