Description

March 9, 1943. I c GARRATT 2,313,141
DISPLAY DEVICE Filed June 3, 1942 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 9, 1943 Ui'i'E ST DISPLAY DEVICE Alan C. Garratt, Upper Montclair, N. J assignor to American Cigarette and Cigar Company, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New Jersey Application June 3, 1942, Serial No. 445,556
2 Claims.
This invention relates to display devices and more particularly to a holder for displaying packaged goods, such as cigarettes, on a counter or show case of a retail store.
In the present invention I provide a holder for a limited number of packages with the receptacle portion supported on an upright or stand so that the articles placed therein will be prominently displayed when the device is placed on a show case or counter. A suitable base is provided to support the upright and balance the receptacle portion and this base is preferably made in the form of a plate of appreciable area. The upper surface of the base is dished to form a change tray.
The receptacle portion of the device is preferably provided with stepped shelves to more prominently display the packages. The upright, or stand, may be of any suitable form but is preferably mounted at the rear of the base and supports the receptacle in a position over the rear portion of the change tray permitting free access to the greater portion of the tray.
The display device may be advantageously used for displaying various types of merchandise and.
by positioning the receptacle portion at an appreciable distance above the base, the attention of prospective purchasers is more readily obtained.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated one form of the invention. In this showmg:
Fig. 1 is a vertical, sectional View on line l| of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal, sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the reference numeral l designates the base which, as stated, is of appreciable area to balance the receptacle portion of the device which is positioned above the base. The base may be formed of any suitable material, such as wood, plastic compositions, etc. and is preferably provided with a fiat undersurface 2. The upper surface of the base is dished, as at 3, to form a change tray. A support or stand 4 is mounted in the base and extends upwardly therefrom. The support may be secured to the base in any suitable way. If the display device is made of wood, the base may be provided with an opening shaped to snugly receive the lower end of the support as illustrated at 5 in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The support may be of any suitable shape and as shown, the front edge 6 may extend substantially veraged goods, such as cigarettes.
tically from the base with the rear end 1 inclined rearwardly. The upper edge 8 of the base is preferably inclined as shown and supports the receptacle portion 9 of the display device. The receptacle portion consists of a bottom member Ill arranged at the same angle as the upper edge of the support and secured thereto. Side walls ll extend upwardly from the bottom member ID. The receptacle portion may be designed to receive any number of packages but as shown it is adapted to receive two rows of three packages each. The rows of packages are separated from each other by partitions I 2 which extend forwardly a greater distance than the edge I3 of the side walls, as shown in Fig. 1, to more prominently display the packages. A front wall I4 is secured to the bottom member I t and supporting members I5 are mounted on the bottom member, the supporting members being stepped as shown to support the packages i6, illustrated in dotted lines, in stepped relation. As shown, a rear wall I'l extends upwardly from the bottom member It at right angles to the upper faces of the supporting members it to support the rear package It, This provides a space H3 at the back of the display device which may be utilized for holding books of matches, when the device is employed for displaying cigarettes.
The device as illustrated and described provides a very attractivedisplay device for pack- Suitable advertising may be arranged on the outer sides of the side wall II, the support 4 and. the peripheral edge of the base I. It will be apparent that when the display device is placed upon a counter or show case, the packages l6 mounted in the receptacle portion are positioned an appreciable distance above the show case and thereby more readily attract the customers attention. Positioning the receptacle portion above the base in this manner necessitates a base of substantial area to balance the display device and prevent it from falling over. I advantageously employ the upper surface of the base as a change tray andthis further serves to attract the customers attention to the displayed merchandise.
I claim:
1. A display device comprising a base of substantial area, the upper surface of the base bethe receptacle portion being spaced from the base to provide ready access to the change tray.
2. A display device comprising a base of substantial area, the upper surface of the base being dished to form a change tray, a support extending upwardly from the base and having an inclined upper edge, a receptacle portion having an inclined bottom surface secured to the upper edge of the support, the receptacle portion being provided with an inclined rear surface, and means for supporting packages in stepped arrangement on the bottom surface of the receptacle portion, the receptacle portion being spaced from the base to provide ready access to the change tray.
ALAN C, GARRATT.
