This invention relates to new and useful improvements in guards for boots and shoes and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a protector for the sole and welt of a shoe at a selected portion thereof.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a foot guard and protector that is quickly and readily applied to the boots of a lineman, which is so designed as to protect the boots from wear and to enable the lineman to accomplish more effective work and in a more convenient manner than was heretofore possible.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of a metallic shield for boots and shoes that may be conveniently applied to or removed from a boot or shoe without in any way affecting the portion of the article on which the same is applied.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a guard of the aforementioned character that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure l is a perspective view of 'a linesmans boot, and showing the present guard applied thereon;

Figure 2 is a plan view of the shoe or boot protector constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the present guard;

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the present guard; and

Figure 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 55 of Figure 4.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral l0 represents the present boot or shoe guard or protector generally, which is constructed of a durable metal and all parts of which are preferably integrally formed. This guard comprises a shoe shield or plate I2 having its outer edge l4 arcuately formed and integrally formed with an arcuate flange [6 that conforms to the curvature of a boot or shoe l8 at the inner edge 20 of the boot or shoe substantially midway between the toe 22 and heel 24 of the shoe or boot l8.

It is preferred, that the end edges 26 of the plate I2 be curved inwardly and rounded slightly at their juncture with the arcuate inner edge 21 of the plate l2 which is substantially parallel to the arcuate outer edge l4 of the plate. The lower face of the plate [2 is pressed inwardly to form a pair of spaced concaved recesses in the lower face of the plate that provide gripping surfaces 25 that are illustrated best in Figure 3 of the drawing.

For the purpose of receiving screws, nails or the like, there is provided a plurality of countersunk apertures 28 in the plate [2. The heads of these suitable fasteners are recessed in the apertures 28 and the shank portions of these fasteners engage the sole 30 of the shoe or boot 18.

In practical use of the guard, the arcuate flange [6 will bear against the outer periphery of a pole or the like when a lineman is climbing the same and will protect the welt or edge 20 of the shoe from excessive wear and will assure the linemans shoes a firm and safe grip with the pole.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.

Having described the invention, what claimed as new is:

A guard for shoes or boots comprising a wear plate having an arcuate outer edge, countersunken fastener receiving apertures provided in said plate, and an arcuate flange integrally formed at the arcuate outer edge of said plate placeable against the inner edge of a sole midway between the heel and toe of a boot, said flange being .of a width equal to the thickness of the sole, said plate having a pair of spaced concaved recesses in its lower face forming gripping surfaces.
