mate contact with the holder; however in spite of the grip thus obtained it not infrequently happens that the blade is moved rearwardly when particularly hard spots in the work are encountered or if too coarse a feed is employed.
It is an object of the invention to provide a toolholder and blade wherein coaction between the holding means and the blade is so arranged that any slight rearward movement of the latter increases the frictional grip so that material movement of the blade in a rearward direction is rendered impossible.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toolholder and blade wherein two separate holding means are provided in the holder which are so positioned that at substantially all positions of the blade therein at least one of the holding means bears against a face of the blade which is so inclined that upon rearward movement of the blade a more binding engagement between the blade and holder results.
Having thus briefly stated the objects and advantages of the invention I will now proceed to describe preferred embodiments thereof with the aid of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a toolholder wherein a blade is secured by holding means consisting of set screws, and
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a side elevation of a slight modification wherein a similar blade is secured in the holder by holding means consisting of cams, and
Figure 4 is a section on the line 44 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 shows a side elevation of another modification wherein a blade of somewhat altered form is secured in the toolholder by holding means consisting of set screws, and
Figure 6 is a section on the line 66 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a side view of another modified form wherein a blade similar to that shown in Figure 5 is secured in the holder by holding means consisting of cams, and
Figure 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Figure 7.
The toolholder I has a longitudinal recess 2 formed along, one side thereof intermediately of its height and throughout its length. The base 3 of the recess 2 is of increased depth as shown at 3a from one side for a short distance, 4 denotes the side of the recess extending outwardly from the deeper extremity 3a of the base 3, and 5 designates the opposite side of the recess. The blade '5' includes a wider cutting head I and a narrower shank 8', the outer face 9 of the head has a preformed cutting surface extending therealong, and a cutting edge IU'is provided across one end of the cutting surface by grinding that end of'the blade at an appropriate angle.
The blade 6 is mounted in the toolholder l with one side of the shank 8 bearing against the base 3 and with one side of the head I extending into the base portion 3a of increased depth. Pressure is then applied" to the lower face H or Ha of the shank 8' remote from and opposite the outer face 9 of the head upon which the cutting surface is formed to force the latter into intimate contact with the side 4 of the recess 2; it being of course understood that the distance between the opposite sides 4 and 5 of the recess 2' is greater than the height of the blade 6.
In Figures 1" to 4 the lower face I l of the shank 8 consists of a plurality of tangent arcs III) the axes of which are of uniform spacing A longitudinally of the blade and the radius B of all the arcs is the same. Thus the lower face is of substantially corrugated form. Provided in the toolholder I are holding means l2 or [2a which are longitudinally uniformly spaced a distance C from one another equal to the spacing A so that at substantially all positions of the blade in the holder one of the holding means l2 or l2a bears against a forwardly and downwardly curved portion of the lower face H of the blade. Thus rearward movement of the blade in the holder forces the lower face ll into more binding contact with the holding means and the outer face 9 of the head into more intimate contact with the side 4 of the recess 2. It is of course admitted that if the center lines of the two holding means 12 or lZa coincide with the center lines of two of the arcs llb then slight rearward movement of the blade will occur before a tightening of the grip on the blade occurs, but this condition seldom obtains and even then no material rearward movement of the blade can result.
In the arrangement shown in Figures 1 and 2 the holding means consists of set screws l2, and in Figures 3 and 4 cams l2a are employed for that purpose.
In Figures 5 to 8 the lower face Ila of the blade shank 8 consists of a plurality of forwardly and downwardly inclined portions Ho connected by steps lid. The holding means, consisting of set screws I2 shown in Figures 5 and 6 or of cams l2a in Figures 7 and 8, bear against the inclined portions Hb so that any rearward movement of the blade forces the outer face 9 of the head into more intimate contact with the side 4 of the recess 2 and no material rearward movement of the blade 6 in the holder i is possible.
While in the foregoing the preferred embodiments of the invention have been described and shown, it is understood that further alterations and modifications may be made thereto provided the said alterations and modifications fall within the scope of the appended claims. 7
What I claim is:
1. An arrangement of the character described comprising a toolholder having one side longitudinally slotted intermediately of its height, a blade mounted in the slot, projecting forward beyond the holder, and having a cutting edge formed across its forward extremity, one edge face of the blade bearing against one side of the slot, the opposite edge face of said blade including a plurality of spaced rearwardly and inwardly inclined sections of uniform length, the total length of all said sections amounting at least to 30 one-half the total length of the blade, and a plurality of holding members adjustably mounted in the holder for engagement with said opposite edge face, said members being so spaced that at all longitudinal positions of the blade in the holder at least one member bears against a rearwardly and inwardly inclined section of said opposite edge face to positively prevent rearward movement of the blade in the holder.
2. An arrangement of the character described comprising a toolholder having one side slotted longitudinally intermediately of its height, a blade mounted in the slot, projecting forward beyond the holder, and having a cutting edge formed across its forward extremity, one edge face of the blade bearing against one side of the slot, the opposite edge face of said blade consisting of a plurality of tangent arcs of uniform length and radius thereby alternately forming inwardly and rearwardly and outwardly and rearwardly inclined sections on said opposite edge face, and a plurality of holding members adjustably mounted in the holder for engagement with said opposite edge face, said members being so spaced that at all longitudinal positions of the blade in the holder one member bears against a portion of a rearwardly and inwardly inclined tangent arc to positively prevent rearward movement of the blade in the holder.
3. An arrangement of the character described comprising a toolholder having one side slotted longitudinally intermediately of its height, a blade mounted in the slot, projecting forward beyond the holder, and having a cutting edge formed across its forward extremity, one edge face of the blade bearing against one side of the slot, the opposite edge face of said blade consisting of a plurality of inwardly and rearwardly inclined sections of uniform length and the adjacent ends of adjacent pairs of sections being connected by steps materially shorter than said sections, and a plurality of holding members adjustably mounted in the holder for engagement with said opposite edge face, each member being adapted to bear against one of the inwardly and rearwardly inclined sections to positively prevent rearward movement of said blade in the holder at all longitudinal positions of the'blade therein.
