CLARENCE RATHBONE, OF ALBANSQNEWV YORK.
DAMPER FOR STOVES AND RANGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,501, dated October 18, 1881.
Application filed June 16, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE RATHBONE, of the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dampers for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the modeofoperatingrollingdampers ofstoves, ranges, 850.; and theobject of my improvement is to provide a simple device for producing synchronal and corresponding movements of two adjacent dampers that are ranged on parallel lines, but set apart from each other. This object I attain by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear portion ofa range containing my improvement, with parts of the top broken away to show the underlying construction; and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are detached details of construction of the dampers and actuating-rod.
The range represented in the drawings is one of the usual construction, having the fire-box at one end, while the opposite end contains two draft-fines, one descending and the other ascending, connecting with a revertible flue beneath the oven. At its upper end the ascending flue connects with a horizontal flue formed between the top plate of the range and the top of the oven, and this latter flue communicates with the outlet-flue leading directly to the escape-pipe at the rear of the range.
One defect com mon to all ranges of this class as heretofore constructed has had its origin in the contracted and insufficient direct draft opening for the draftcurrents, that pass directly from the fire-box to the escape-pipe without passing under and back of the oven. Said defeet is inherent in the necessarily peculiar form of the flue-strip that separates the flues over the top of the oven, the broken surface of said fluestrip preventing the formation at an eligible point of a single sufficient opening; and the use of several openings located at different points of said flue-strip, that run in the same direction, but are not ranged on the same line, has heretofore been held as objectionable on account of the supposed difflculty of operating at one time and with a positive motion several separate dampers for covering said openings (No model.)
when arranged in the manner above set forth.
My invention remedies the defect above referred to.
In the accompanying drawings, A indicates the top plate of the oven; B, the descending and B the ascending flue, both located at the end of the oven O, the horizontal flue (over the top of the oven) connecting the ascending flue B with the escape-pipe; E, the flue-strip for separating the flue G from the main flue over the top of the oven. The parts 6 and e of said flue-strip both run parallel to the side of the range, but are placed at different distances therefrom. F and F are direct-draft openings, formed respectively in the parts 0 and e of the fiue-stri p E; G, rolling dampers for closing the direct-draft openings. Said dampers are each provided with a cup-shaped protuberance, g, Figs.2, 3, and 4, having a slotted opening,g', formed therein. H is a rod for operating both dampers Gr. Said rod has but a single part where it passes through the side of the range, but is bifurcated within it, one branch thereof connecting to the damper for the opening]? and the other to the damper for the opening F. Each branch is provided with a raised stem, h, (for passing through the slotted openings 9 of the dampers,) which terminates in a T-head, h, that engages underneath the protuberance g on the dampers, for the purpose of forming a hinge-like connection between the latter and their operating-rods.
By my improvement ample openings are formed for the direct-draft'currents in their passage from the fire-box directly to the escapepipe. The dampers for said openings areadapted to move simultaneously, and the boiler-hole (not shown in the drawings) over the flue O is not cut off from the heated currents when the direct-draft openings are thrown open. When required, it is obvious that more than two direct-draftopenings may be formed and each provided with an independent damper connected, as herein described, to a separate branch of a furcated rod, so that a simultaneous movement of all the dampers may be produced by a single movement of the external handle.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with two or more separated dampers, G, of the furcated rod H, having an independent attachment to each of said dampers, hut adapted to produce a synehro and fureated rod H, constructed and arranged nous and like movement of allthedampers conin relation to each other to operate as herein IO nected thereto, as and for the purpose herein specified.
