2 It must-be-appreciated that in the use ofgarment blockers, such necessarily are subjectedto the wet garments so that the component elements thereof must be readily associable and removable relative to'the garment without obstruction. It is also desirable that the component elements and the expedients for maintaining such'in adjusted relation should not' become involved with the material of which the garment is madenor should such protrude to any extent to avoid impairment tothegarment. This is particularly true of the sleeves which usually are attached to frame eyelets that interrupt smoothness of garment contour and obstruct the garment in the association thereof with the frame, especially when the arm forms are not utilized which occurs often owing to the judgment of the user and the requirements of the garment.

Still another object is to provide an improved adjustable frame and arm guiding and locking means that do not embody movable parts for maintaining garment blockers in adjustment and afford instant adjustment and convenient manipulation responsive to a relative displacing urge on the frame elements.

So that the frame sections Ill2 may be adjustable in size responsive to guided displace- 4 ment of the overlapping wire frame portions l3-I4 and l5l6 relative to each other and to slidably confine them for relative extensible adjustment, each of the overlapping wire frame portions i3-l4 and l5--l6 have, in this instance, combined guiding and frictional retaining fasteners anchored to each or preferabl bent or articulated therefrom for yielding contact with their adjacent overlapping frame wire portions l3l4 and l5l6 and vice versa to maintain the frame sections HI2 in any desired extensible relation to determine the size thereof within their limit of adjustment. To this end, the combined guiding and retaining elements preferably comprise integral spring clips l'll8 and I920 bent or otherwise shaped from the extremities of the overlapping wire frame portions l3l4 and l5-l 6, respectively.
The spring clips ll-20 and l8--i9 are identical in shape, structure and functional characteristics so that the description of each set will suffice and avoid repetition in that thes sets are inverted and oppositely disposed to serve the same function on their respective overlapping wire portions l3-l4 and I5I6. The resilient sprin clips I8l9 each comprise a double convolution 2i defining, in this instance, a circular spring loop or coil 22 which extends integrally from the overlapping wire portion M or I6 to terminate in an inclined leg 23 converging with the overlapping wire frame portion [4 or iii.
The converging coil leg 23 terminates in a transversely disposed ring or eyelet 24 formed integral therewith to envelop the superposed overlapping wire frame portions i3--l4 or l5-I6. The eyelet 24 on each clip I8 and I9 is integral with the overlapping frame portions l4 and I6,
respectively to serve as a guide for the other confronting overlapping frame portions I3 and 85, respectively. The resilient spring clips l8 and I9 with their eyelets 24 are illustrative of means associated with each of said garment form overlapping portions I4 and I6 to slidably guide and resiliently retain the other of said garment form overlapping and confronting portion [3 and [5, respectively, in adjusted overlapping extensible relation relative thereto or in other words relative to each other. Thus the spring clips ll-Zll and I8-l9 serve to retain the frame sections lll2 in free slidable relation responsive to exerting an opposite pushing or pulling force on the overlapping wire members |3i4 or l5l6.
The eyelet or ring 24 has its terminus 25 proximate to or abutting against the extremity of the converging coil leg 23 as a transverse offset thereof to define the slidable guide and retaining eyelet or ring 24. It should be noted that the angularity of the converging leg 23 as it emerges from the convoluted spring coil 22, exerts an urge upon the eyelet or ring 24 in a direction transverse to the overlapping frame wire portions l3--l4 or i5|6 to establish frictional contact therewith. The friction contact established by the eyelet or ring member 24 responsive to the transverse spring urge exerted by the coil 22, is sufficient to retain the slidable overlapping wire frame portions i3-M or liii6 in their adjusted relation without precluding any accidental relative sliding displacement therebetween.
The other spring clip 20 on the opposite end of the overlapping frame wire portions l3i4 and l5 l6, is similarly shaped to form a spring coil 26 which emerges from an arcuately connecting portion 21 extending from the straight overlapping frame wire portion l3 or It. This brings the spring coil 26 in alignment with the superposed adjacent wires l3-l4 or l5-l6 to provide an inclined leg 28 that converges with the overlapping wire members 13-! or l5-l6 at a point substantially in confronting relation with the contacting edge of the superposed wires IS-IB. The converging leg 28 has a short horizontal arm 29 in parallel contact alignment with the overlapping frame wire portion 13 or IE to terminate in an eyelet or ring'member 30 that envelops the superposed wire frame members l3-l4 or I5-l6.
The ring or eyelet 30 has a terminus 3| which is disposed proximate to or contacts with the starting point of the eyelet or ring member 38 to maintain the overlapping frame wire members I3-l4 and l5-l6 in slidable superposed alignment. Similarly to the coil 22, the coil 26 exerts a transverse displacing influence on the eyelet or ring member 30 to frictionally maintain the adjacent overlapping frame wire portions l3-i4 and l5-l 6 in frictional contact. As a result, the frame sections l-l2 can be relatively displaced to decrease or increase the size thereof as illustrated in dotted outline in Figure 1. This is accomplished by merely grasping the spring coils 22-26 of the spring clips l'l-l8 and/or Iii-23 with the thumb and finger of each hand and moving them toward or away from each other to respectively enlarge or decrease the size of the frame Iii to conform with a knitted sweater or other garment for drying thereon.
The usual garment such as a sweater has arms which should be shaped during the blocking or drying thereof, and this is accomplished by providing substantially U-shaped wire sleeve forms 32-33 which have their converging side legs 34-35 terminate at their free extremities in spring clips 36 and 31 to frictionally grasp the frame It) in the region of the arm pit regions thereof. The arm pit regions 38-39 of the frame I!) have arcuate portions of different curvature and inclination to the end that the upper and lower sleeve form clips 33-31 are somewhat differently disposed as is apparent in Figures to 14 inclusive. As shown, the upper sleeve form clips 36 (Figure 9) have a straight leg 38 constituting an extension of the upper sleeve form arm 34.
The leg 33 terminates in a depending substantially semi-circular arm 39' which is reversely bent to provide a diagonal leg 40 terminating substantially in alignment with and spaced from the starting point 4! of the semi-circular arm 39. However, the terminus 42 of the reversely extending and diagonal leg 40 need not be exactly in line with the starting point 4| of the semi-circular arm 39 in that this may vary within a wide range to merge in another semi-circular arm or convolution 43. The semi-circular arm or convolution 43 depends from the diagonal leg 40 in spaced parallel relation with the semi-circular arm or convolution 39' for a distance somewhat less than the diameter of the wire from which the frame It] is articulated for frictional grasping reception therein. The spaced and somewhat smaller semi-- circular arm or convolution 43 terminates in an inclined leg 44 which converges with the leg 38' in an offset clip extremity 45 to abut against the sleeve form leg 34 for anchored association there-- with in any suitable manner such as welding along their meeting edge as at 46 to rigidly anchor the spaced parallel arms or convolutions 39-43 serving as a spaced spring coil.
The offset clip extremity 45 preferably has a tapered edge 41 to minimize or eliminate any 01:!- struction with the garment sleeve disposed over the sleeve forms 32 and 33. The terminal confronting surface of the semi-circular arms 39-'-43 are bowed or depressed as at 43-49 to provide aligned retaining seats for the frame lil that is frictionally clinched therebetween for attachment and detachment of as well as slidable connection to the upper legs 34 of the sleeve form 32-33. It should be noted that the spaced confronting clip arms 39'43 constitute a spring coil wherein the spaced arms 39-43 serve as spaced convolutions thereof to frictionally and slidably grasp a rigid member such as the frame If! therebetweern The lower legs 35 of the sleeve form 32-33 are provided with a spring clip 3? shaped similarly to the spring clip 35 described supra and formed on the upper leg 34 of the same sleeve forms 32-33. However, the lower sleeve form clip 3? is oppositely disposed and inclined at a different angle to conform substantially with the inclination of the wire in the lower portion of the arm pit regions 38-39 of the adjustable frame 10 so that the latter is resiliently clinched therewith to support the terminal ends 35-31 of each of the sleeve forms 32-33. This construction also enables the sleeve forms 32-33 to be enlarged or decreased in spread as shown in dotted outline in Figure l to conform with the desired arm measurements of a knit sweater or other garment disposed thereover. The sleeve forms 32-33 are identical in construction and, in fact, they may be interchangeably used in connection with either arm pit 38-33 of the frame 10.
It should be noted that the garments such as knit sweaters are first placed on the frame It] with the sleeve forms 32-33 detached therefrom. Thereafter, the sleeve forms 32-33 are inserted through the neck or open bottom of the sweater for displacement into the sleeves thereof. There-- upon, the sleeve forms 32-33 are attached to the arm pit regions 38-39 of the frame it) to assume the desired proportions by adjustment therealong for filling the garment sleeves which are blocked or permitted to dry thereon after washing.
In the modified embodiment shown in Figures 6 and 7, the frame It is provided with the upper frame overlapping portions i3'-|4' having the adjustable guiding and retaining elements l1-l8' illustrated and described in Figure 1. However, the bottom frame overlapping portions |5-I6' are provided with modified resilient guide and spring clips I 9-20' comprising an adaptation of the spring clips 36-3! constituting the attaching and detaching expedients for the sleeve forms 32-33 illustrated and described in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 9 to 14 inclusive. The overlapping frame portions l5'-l6' terminate at their free extremities in the spring clips I9'-20' that integrally extend therefrom and are shaped to conform substantially in configuration and structure with the spring clips 36 and 37 illustrated in Figures 9 and 12, respectively. The clip [9' is exactly the same as the clip 36 of Figure 9 except that it is bent upwardly with the end of the spaced convolution 43' spot-welded directly to the Wire l5 as at 44' to provide spaced convolutions 39"-43 to frictionally receive the adjacent sliding frame overlapping portion it thezeb iveen. In this instance, the spaced arms or convolutions 39"-43 of the spring clip or coil I 9' are somewhat more elongated in the transverse direction relative to the frame overlapping portions |-l6' to accommodate and slidably retain the adjacent overlapping frame portion l6l5. In this case, the'diagonal arm connecting leg 40 is positioned somewhat beyond the frame overlapping wire portion IE to provide the proper resiliency for the grasping of the adjacent frame overlapping wire portion l6 and vice versa.
The spring coils or clips I9'-20 are provided with confronting pairs of aligned indentations 48--49 to serve as seats for the frame overlapping portions 16' frictionally disposed between the spaced convolutions 39"43. The spring clip or coil 20' is similarly constructed to integrally extend from the frame overlapping wire portion It to frictionally grasp the adjacent relatively slidable frame overlapping portion [5 for the adjusted retention thereof in its desired relative position. Thus, the spring clip or coil 20 is identical in construction to t the spring clip or coil l9, except that the spring clips or coils I9'2fl' extend oppositely to render the frame overlapping wire portion l5-l6 extensible in either direction (Figures 6, 7 and 8). The spring clips I92il may also be utilized to resiliently grasp and retain the upper frame overlapping wire portions l3|4' in lieu of the spring clips l'I -I 8 depending upon the dictates of commercial practice.
It should be noted that the modified sleeve forms 32-33 may be provided to conform with the short sleeve shapes of slip-over sweaters worn by junior sized individuals. The sleeve forms 3233' are of the bobby type; however, their frictional or resilient clips 36'3'I are identical in structure with those shown on the conventional sleeve form 3233. The modified sleeve forms 32'33 are shown in dotted outline in Figure 1 while the conventional sleeve form 32 is shown in dotted outline on the modified embodiment shown in Figure 6. These fully detachable sleeve forms 32'33 are especially advantageous in that no obstructing expedients need be attached to the frame II] or I0 so that these frames may be utilized for blocking or drying sweaters in instances where the individual is not desirous of using the sleeve forms 3233 and/or 32-33.
While we have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of this invention, it must be understood that the invention is capable of considerable variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention.
We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such Variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for defining adjustable interior shapes of garments to be sized thereon, and pre-set non-adjustable friction clutching means associated with each of said garment form overlapping portions to slidably guide and resiliently retain the other of said garment form overlapping portions in adjusted overlapping extensible relation relative thereto to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form, said friction clutching means being effective to permit relative sliding of said overlapping frame portions responsive to exerting relative sliding displacement thereof to man- 8 ually change the frame size and to retain said overlapping frame portions against relative slidable displacement responsive to the force exerted by the garment thereon, whereby frame size adjustment may be effected without manipulation of said friction clutch means.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for .defining adjustable interior shapes of garments to be sized thereon, and spring mounted friction clutching guide ring means integrally extending from each of said garment form overlapping portions to slidably guide and resiliently retain the other of said garment form overlapping portions in adjusted overlapping extensible relation relative thereto to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for defining adjustable interior shapes of garments to be sized thereon, and coil spring suspended friction clutching guide ring means associated with each of said garment form overlapping portions to slidably guide and resiliently retain the other of said garment form overlapping portions in adjusted overlappingextensible relation relative thereto to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a wire garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for defining adjustable interior shapes of garments to be sized thereon, and wire spring clip pre-set non-adjustable friction clutching means bent from each of said garment form overlapping portions to slidably guide and resiliently retain the other of said garment form overlapping portions in extensible relation relative thereto to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form, said friction clutching means being effective to permit relative sliding of said overlapping frame portions responsive to exerting relative sliding displacement thereof to manually change the frame size and to retain said overlapping frame portions against relative slidable displacement responsive to the force exerted by the garment thereon, whereby frame size adjustment may be effected without manipulation of said friction clutching means.
5. In a device of the character described, the
combination with a wire garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for defining adjustable interior shapes of garments to be sized thereon, and pre-set non-adjustable friction clutching means bent from each of said garment form overlapping portions in enveloping relation therewith to slidably guide and resiliently retain the other of said garment form overlapping portions in adjusted overlapping extensible relation relative thereto to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form, said friction clutching means being effective to permit relative sliding of said overlapping frame portions responsive to exerting relative sliding displacement thereof to manually change the frame size and to retain said overlapping frame portions against relative slidable displacement responsive to the force exerted by the garment thereon, whereby frame size adjustment may be effected without manipulation of said friction clutching means.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a wire garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for defining adjustable interior shapes of garments tobe sized thereon, and wire spring clip pre-set non-adjustable friction clutching means including a convoluted spring member bent from each of said garment form overlapping portions to slidably guide and resiliently retain the other of said garment form overlapping portions in adjusted overlapping extensible relation relative thereto to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form, said friction clutching means being effective to permit relative sliding of said overlapping frame portions responsive to exerting relative sliding displacement thereof to manually change the frame size and to retain said overlapping frame portions against relative slidable displacement responsive to the force exerted by the garment thereon, whereby frame size adjustment may be effected without manipulation of said friction clutching means '7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a wire garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for defining adjustable interior shapes of garments to be sized thereon, and pre-set non-adjustable friction clutching means including a spring mounted guide member bent from each of said garment form overlapping portions in enveloping relation therewith to slidably guide and resiliently retain the other of said garment form overlapping portions in adjusted overlapping extensible relation relative thereto to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form, said friction clutching means being effective to permit relative sliding of said overlapping frame portions responsive to exerting relative sliding displacement thereof to manually change the frame size and to retain said overlapping frame portions against relative slidable displacement responsive to the force exerted by the garment thereon, whereby frame size adjustment may be effected without manipulation of said friction clutching means.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a wire garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for defining adjustable interior shapes of garments to be sized thereon. and wire spring loop and connecting guide ring friction clutching means bent from each of said garment form overlapping portions to slidably guide and frictionally retain the other of said garment form overlapping portions in adjusted overlapping extensible relation relative thereto to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form. 9. Tn a device of the character described. the combination with a wire garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for defining adjustable interior shapes of garments to be sized thereon, and Wire spring loop and connecting guide ring friction clutching means bent from each of said garment form overlapping portions in offset spaced enveloping relation therewith to slidably guide and frictionally retain the other of said garment form overlapping portions in adjusted overlapping extensible relation relative thereto to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form.
10. In a device of the character described, the combination with a wire garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for defining adjustable interior shapes of garments to be sized thereon, and wire spring loop and connecting guide ring means bent from each of said garment form overlapping portions in offset 10 spaced enveloping relation therewith, said guide ring means extending transversely around said garment form overlapping portions and connected by an angular leg with said wire spring loop to slidably guide and frictionally retain the other of said garment form overlapping portions in adjusted overlapping extensible relation relative thereto to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form.
11. A form appendage element comprising a preformed member and a confronting rigid member, and confronting resilient pre-set non-adjustable friction clutching ends extending from said preformed member to frictionally grasp said confronting rigid member therebetween anywhere along the length thereof to slidably guide and retain said members in adjusted relation, said confronting resilient arms being effective to permit relative sliding of said preformed member relative to said rigid member responsive to exerting relative sliding displacement thereof to manually change their relative position and to retain said members against relative slidable displacement responsive to the force exerted by the garment thereon whereby their relative adjusted relation may be changed without manipulation of said confronting resilient arms.
12. A form appendage element comprising a preformed member and a confronting rigid member, and confronting interconnected resilient pre-set non-adjustable friction clutching ends extending from said preformed member to frictionally and slidably grasp said confronting rigid member therebetween anywhere along the length thereof to slidably guide and retain said members in adjusted relation, said confronting resilient arms being effective to permit relative sliding of said preformed member relative to said rigid member responsive to exerting relative sliding displacement thereof to manually change their relative position and to retain said members against relative slidable displacement responsive to the force exerted by the garment thereon whereby their relative adjusted relation may be changed without manipulation of said confronting resilient arms.
13. A form appendage element comprising a preformed member and a confronting rigid member, and confronting interconnected resilient spaced coil convolutions extending from said preformed member to frictionally and slidably grasp said confronting rigid member therebetween anywhere along the length thereof to slidably guide and retain said members in adjusted relation.
14. A form appendage element comprising a preformed member and a confronting rigid member, confronting interconnected resilient spaced coil convolutions extending from said preformed member, and means for anchoring the last spaced coil convolution to said preformed member to frictionally and slidably grasp said confronting rigid member therebetween anywhere along the length thereof to slidably guide and retain said members in adjusted relation.
15. In a device of the character described, the combination with a garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for defining adjustable interior shapes of garments to be sized thereon, and resiliently spaced convolutions defining dual guide and retaining clips associated with the free ends of said garment form overlapping portions to slidably guide and resiliently retain the other of said garment form overlapping portions in adjusted extensible relation to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form. 1
16. In a device of the character described, the combination with a garment form having relatively slidable overlapping portions for defining adjustable interior shapes of garments to be sized thereon, resiliently spaced convolutions defining dual guide and retaining clips associated with the free ends of said garment form overlapping portions, and means for anchoring each of said spaced clip convolutions to said garment form overlapping portions to slidably guide and resiliently retain the other of said garment form overlappin portions in adjusted extensible relation therewith to support variously sized and shaped garments on said form.
17. In a device of the character described, the
combination with a garment form comprising relativeljs slidable Wire sections, each of said wire sections having relatively sliding overlapping end portions, and spaced diagonally connected Wire clip arms on the ends of said overlapping end portions to frictionally grasp the adjacent overlapping wire portion to relatively guide and retain said wire sections in adjusted relation.
18. In a device of the character described, the combination with a garment form comprising relatively slidable wire sections, each of said wire sections having relatively sliding overlapping end portions, and spaced diagonally connected wire 12 clip arms on the ends of said overlapping end portions, each of said diagonally connected clip arms being anchored to the end of each overlapping portion to frictionally grasp the other adjacent overlapping wire portion to relatively guide and retain said wire sections in adjusted relation.
