Description

Oct. 11, 1949. J. RIVINIUS LIGHT P'LUG AND CAP Filed Dec. 21, 1945 I INVENTOR. JACOB R|V|N|US .0
Patented Oct. 11, 1949 "UNITED STATES Jacob Rivinius, Minot, N. Dak.
Application December 21, 1945, Serial No. 636,463
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to an electric light socket plug and plug cap therefore which can be used with any conventional type of outlet.
An object of this invention is to provide a device that once connected will be prevented from being disconnected by accidental strains on the wires connected thereby.
A further object of the invention is to provide a locking means for the device that will engage and disengage by a turning movement of the plug at the time of its engagement with the outlet.
With the above and other objects and advan tages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the plug embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
a Figure 3 is an end view thereof;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the cap or :base associated therewith;
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a side View of the complete assem bly, and
Figure 7 is a sectional view on the line l-I of Figure 4.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the reference numeral Ill designates the body of the plug embodying the invention which is made of any suitable material available for plugs of this nature. The body l9 comprises the plug portion l2 having the screw-threads thereon surrounded by the metal shell I4 conforming to the screw threads. The plug portion I2 merges into the conical portion l6 and the portion 16 is pro vided with a circular flanged top portion 1 8, having a position indicating notch 20 therein.
The body H] is provided with conductors 22 and 24 respectively which extend inwardly of and are embodied in the portion it, but lie exteriorly of the conical portion IS in an exposed condition. The conductor 22 extends through the bottom of the portion l2 and is bent inwardly and pro- Vided with the circular portion 26 which forms the central contact point at the end of the body 10. The conductor 24 terminates within the metal shell l4 and is connected thereto in the conventional manner.
The plug portion I2 is adapted to be inserted in an electrical socket to obtain current for electrical appliances and the like, but before it is positioned therein, the portion I2 is inserted in the center bore 28 of the circular cap or base 30 which is made of the same material as the body 10 and is provided with the conical recess 32 to conform to and mate with the conical portion iii of the body In. The base 30 is provided with the vertical opening 34 and the horizontal openin 36 communicating therewith.
Formed integral with the base 30 and forming a continuation of the opening 36 is the tubular ear or arm 38. The electrical cable or wires 40 are inserted through the arm 38 and extending through the openings 36 and 34 are connected to the conductors 42 and 44 respectively by screws 46. The conductors 42 and 44 are sunk into the conical recess 32 and make contact with the conductors 22 and 24 in their exposed position on the conical portion I6 of the body Ill.
Thus the base from which the electrical energy is received is locked to the outlet by the plug body Ill and the top I '8 will form snug engagement with the marginal rim shoulder 48 of the base 3!). If the notch 20 is always aligned with the indicator 50 on the shoulder 48, positive connection between the conductors is assured.
It is believed that the operation and construction of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is to be understood that although the invention has been described in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the details of construction and specific arrangement and combination of parts herein illustrated and described since minor changes in the details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may-be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described, comprising a plug body, screw-threads on the lower 'end of said body, a conical portion on the upper end of said body, a circular flanged top portion on the upper end of said conical portion, exposed contacts on the outer surface of said conical portion, a circular base, a central bore in said base, a conical recess in said base in communication with said bore, exposed contacts in the surface of the wall of the recess, the conical portion of said plug body adapted to be positioned in the conical recess of said base when said plug body is mounted into the bore of the base so that the contacts on said plug will engage the contacts in said base,
said plug body and said base will be locked in unit 10 assembly.
