17 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in combined pipe wrench and vise.
The principal objects of this invention are:'
First, to provide a tool which may be used conveniently as a pipe wrench or a pipe vise.
Second, to provide a pipe wrench of the selftightening or gripping type which is easily opened to release the pipe and which may be mounted on a stationary support and utilized as a pipe vise.
Third, to provide a pipe wrench with a link mounted lower jaw which cooperates with an adjustable and swingable upper jaw so that the wrench will have a strong self-tightening gripping action when torque is applied to the wrench and so that the jaws will open wide when the wrench is moved oppositely from the torque applying direction.
Fourth, to provide a pipe wrench in which the grip or pressure of the jaws may be greatly increased by the use of a separate wrench or tool.
Fifth, to provide a pipe wrench having two adjustments for tightening the jaws of the wrench, whereby one adjustment may be used to determine the approximate spacing of the wrench jaws and the second adjustment may be used to obtain a high clamping force between the jaws.
Sixth, to provide a wrench having two adjustments for tightening the jaws of the wrench, one of which adjustments has an unconnected thrust engagement with the jaws to automatically loosen the jaws when the wrench is moved oppositely from its working direction.
Other objects and advantages pertaining to the details and economies of my invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following description and claims.

The increased amplitud "jaw"o' tierling i s-of greate atiehtaent ethyl prinitting ees'y'en- 7'5 gagement of the wrench with-the pipebut"also in materially increasing the number of positions .in which the wrench may be attached to the pipe. Note that the swinging mount of the jaws permits the jaws to engage the pipe with the body and handle of the wrench in a wide range of angular positions with respect to the jaws and pipe. Thus the jaws can effectively grip a pipe while in the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 with the handle at an angle with respect to the normal position of the jaws. This is very advantageous when working in crowded places where it may be dimcult to find room to swing the handle of the wrench.
A further advantage of my wrench is that the jaws may be positively clamped to a. pipe by means of the screw 46 and it is not necessary to maintain a continual gripping strain on the handle as is the case with ordinary pipe wrenches. The V shaped contour of the jaws gives four point contact with the pipe and forces may be applied to the handle that have components parallel or askew to the pipe and handle without loosening the jaws from the pipe. Such forces on an ordinary wrench would cause it to slip off the pipe.
I have thus described a highly practical embodiment of my combined wrench and vise so that others may reproduce the same with such minor modifications of detail as may be desired without further description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combined pipe wrench and vise comprising a body member having a shank portion selectively attachable to a handle or non-rotatably mountable in a fixed socket, spaced side arms on said body member having rearwardly projecting nose portions defining aligned apertures, a first pivot pin supported in said apertures, a second pivot pin extending between said side arms and spaced upwardly and forwardly from said first pivot pin,
a first coupling pivotally mounted on said first pivot pin, a second coupling pivotally mounted on said first coupling, a thumb wheel defining an internally threaded aperture and having inwardly beveled ends, said couplings having undercut nose portions engageable with the beveled ends of said thumb wheel, an upper jaw member having a threaded arm portion adjustably received in said thumb wheel, a lower jaw member having a sliding connection with said arm of said upper jaw, a link pivotally connected to said lower jaw and having its lower end pivotally mounted on said second pivot pin, an arcuate thrust plate extending between said side arms and bearing against said link, a thrust pin pivotally connected to said second coupling and having a shoulder formed therearound, a cylinder rotatably mounted between the side arms of said body and defining a transverse threaded aperture, an adjusting screw threadingly engaged in said aperture of said cylinder, said adjusting screw being hollow to receive said thrust pin and movable against said shoulder, arcuate guide members secured to said side arms and concentric about. said first pivot pin, said guide members extending through said thumb wheel and alongside of said arm on said upper jaw, and an arcuate strap having its ends secured to said first pivot pin and extending around said thumb wheel, said thumb wheel being annularly grooved to receive said retaining strap.
2. A combined pipe wrench and vise comprising a body member having a shank portion selectively attachable to a handle or non-rotatably mountable in a. fixed socket, spaced side arms on saidbody member having rearwardly projecting nose portions, defining aligned apertures, a first pivot pin supported in said apertures, a second pivot pin extending between said side arms and spaced upwardly and forwardly from said first pivot pin, a first coupling pivotally mounted on said first pivot pin, a second coupling pivotally mounted on said, firstcoupling, a thumb wheel defining an internally threaded aperture and having inwardly beveled ends, said couplings having undercut nose portions engageable with the beveled ends of said thumb wheel, an upper jaw member having a threaded arm portion adjustably received in said thumb wheel, a lower jaw member having a sliding connection with said arm ,of said upper jaw, a link pivotally connected to said lower jaw and having its lower end pivotally mounted on said second pivot pin, a thrust pin pivotally connected to said second coupling and havinga shoulder formed therearound, a
thrust member rotatably mounted between the side arms of said body and defining a transverse threaded aperture, an adjusting screw threadingly engaged in said aperture of said thrust member, said adjusting screw being movable against said shoulder, arcuate guide members secured to said side arms and concentric about said first pivot pin, said guide members extending through said thumb wheel and alongside of said arm on said upper jaw, and an arcuate strap having its ends secured to said first pivot pin and extending around said thumb wheel. A combined pipe wrench and vise comprising a body member having a shank portion selectively attachable to a handle or mountable in a fixed socket, spaced side arms on said body member defining aligned apertures, a first pivot pin supported in said apertures, a second pivot pin extending between said side arms and spaced upwardly and forwardly from said first pivot pin, a first coupling pivotally mounted on said first pivot pin, a second coupling pivotally mounted on said first coupling, a thumb wheel defining an internally threaded aperture and having inwardly beveled shoulders at its ends, said couplings having undercut nose portions engageable with the shoulders of said thumb wheel, an upper jaw member having a threaded arm portion adjustably received in said thumb wheel, a lower jaw member having a sliding connection with said arm of said upper jaw, a link pivotally connected to said lower jaw and having its lower end pivotally mounted'on said second pivot pin, a thrust bar pivotally connected to said second coupling and having a shoulder formed thereon, a thrust member rotatably mounted in the side arms of said body and defining a transverse threaded aperture, an adjusting screw threadingly engaged in said aperture of said thrust member, said adjusting screw being movable against said shoulder on said thrust bar.

A wrench comprising a body member. having spaced parallel side arms, an upper jaw having a depending threaded arm, an internally threaded thumb wheel adjustably receiving said arm on said upper jaw, a lower jaw having a sliding connection with said arm on said upper jaw, a link having one end pivotally connected to said lower jaw and its other end pivotally mounted between said side arms on said body, a retaining coupling pivotally mounted between said side arms and spaced from the pivotal connection between said link and said side arms, said coupling being engageable with said thumb wheel to guide said thumb wheel for swinging motion about the pivotal connection of said coupling, an arcuate guide member secured to one of said side arms and concentric about the pivotal connection of said coupling, said guide member extending through said thumb wheel and along side of said arm on said upper jaw, and a retaining band pivotally connected with said coupling for swinging motion concentric therewith, said band being engaged with said thumb wheel for further guiding said thumb Wheel.

A wrench comprising a body member having spaced parallel side arms, an upper jaw having a depending threaded arm, an internally threaded thumb wheel adjustably receiving said arm on said upper jaw, a lower jaw having a sliding connection with said arm on said upper jaw, a link having one end pivotally connected to said lower jaw and its other end pivotally mounted between said side arms on said body. a retaining coupling pivotally mounted between said side arms and spaced from the pivotal connection between said link and said side arms, said coupling being engageable with said thumb wheel to guide said thumb wheel for swinging motion about the pivot of said coupling, and a retaining band pivotally connected to said coupling for swinging motion concentric therewith, said band being engaged with said thumb wheel for further guiding said thumb wheel.

A wrench comprising a body member having spaced parallel side arms, an upper jaw having a depending threaded arm, an internally threaded thumb wheel adjustably receiving said arm on said upper jaw, a lower jaw having a sliding connection with said arm on said upper jaw, a link having one end pivotally connected to said lower jaw and its other end pivotally mounted between said side arms on said body, a retaining coupling pivotally mounted between said side arms and spaced from the pivotal connection between said link and said side arms, said coupling being engageable with said thumb wheel to guide said thumb wheel for swinging motion about the pivot of said coupling, and an arcuate guide member secured to one of said side arms and concentric about the pivotal connection of said coupling, said guide member extending through said thumb wheel and along side of said arm on said upper jaw for further guiding said thumb wheel.

A wrench comprising a body member, spaced parallel pivots carried by said body memher, an upper jaw having a threaded arm portion, a thumb nut adjustably receiving said arm portion on said upper jaw, a guide member engaged with said thumb nut and pivotally connected to one of said pivots at a point on said guide member spaced from said arm portion and the axis of said nut, the axis of said one pivot being perpendicular to a plane containing said arm portion and being ofiset from said arm portion whereby said nut and said arm portion can swin bodily about said one pivot, a lower jaw having 'a sliding connection with said arm portion of said upper jaw, and a link having one end pivotally connected to said lower jaw and its other end pivotally connected to said other pivot on-said body.
14. A wrench comprising a body member having a pivot, an upper jaw having a threaded arm portion, a thumb nut adjustably receiving said arm portion on said upper jaw, a guide member engaged with said thumb nut and arranged to guide said nut and arm portion for arcuate swinging motion about an axis spaced from and parallel to said pivot, said spaced axis being perpendicular to a plane containing said arm portion and passing through said body member in spaced relation to said arm, a lower jaw having a sliding connection with said arm portion of said upper jaw, and a link having one end pivotally connected to said lower jaw and its other end pivotally connected to said pivot on said body,

In a wrench, the combination of a body having spaced side members, an outer jaw provided with a threaded shank and having longitudinal grooves in its sides, an inner jaw provided with supporting members engaging said grooves, a supporting link pivotally connected to said inner jaw and between the body side members, said body member having thrust engagement with the link and concentric with the pivot connecting said link to said body member, an adjusting nut for said outer jaw having a peripheral groove, a supporting band embracing the nut and in said groove and pivotally mounted on the body member, curved supports disposed through the nut at the sides of said outer jaw shank and secured at their ends to said body member whereby the jaws are swingably supported on the body member, and an adjusting screw mounted on said body member between the side members thereof and having a thrust connection with the shank of the outer jaw for tiltably moving said outer jaw.
16. In a wrench, the combination of a body having spaced side members, an outer jaw provided with a threaded shank and having longitudinal grooves in its sides, an inner jaw provided with supportin members engaging said grooves, a supporting link pivotally connected to said inner jaw and between the body side members, an adjusting nut for said outer jaw having a peripheral groove, a supporting band embracing the nut and in said groove and pivotally mounted on the body member, a curved support disposed through the nut at the sides of said outer jaw shank and secured at its ends to said body member whereby the jaws are swingably supported on the body member, and an adjusting screw mounted on said body member between the side members thereof and having a thrust connection with the shank of the outer jaw for tiltably moving said outer jaw.
