The valve stem II and the valve head I2 and the knob I5 may be made of substantially pure iron or any suitable material such as plastic material that will not amalgamate with the mercury.
If the valve stem II, the knob I5 and valve head I2 are made from a suitable plastic material, such as specified for making the hollow handle, then the plastic material for said valve stem etc. need not be made of transparent or translucent material.
The pestle body I may be made of porcelain or any suitable plastic material. The exit orifice III is formed in the connection or joint of the tubular extension 6 with the pestle I. The exit orifice I leads from a position above and at the lowermost portion of the incline or ramp 9 to the outer surface portion of the pestle I, so that the mercury can roll down or descend on the pestle into the mortar I9 without excessive splashing.
The mortar I9 is conventional and forms no part of my invention but is disclosed merely to visualize clearly the use and operation of my combined pestle and dispensing device or apparatus.
When the manufactured parts are ready for assembly the valve stem I I is inserted through the valve seat and guide and the spring I8 is placed in position surrounding the stem I I.
The spring I8 is depressed so that the knob I5 may be applied to the valve stem II to maintain the spring under tension. Now the stretchable diaphragm I6, which is preferably made of rubber, is placed over the end of the tubular hollow handle and secured in position thereon by the screw threaded flanged ring II. The pestle body I is detachably secured in place by a soluble cement or glue so that an old Worn-out pestle body may be removed by dissolving the glue in water or other appropriate solvent.
In operation the apparatus comprising the pestle is used in the ordinary way in connection with a mortar containing the dental filling alloy or mix. When it is desired to dispense a charge of mercury the valve is depressed by a finger tip of the operator as indicated in Fig. 2. If the release of a charge of mercury is not sufficient to make the amalgam of proper consistency a further charge may be added by repeating the operation of depressing the valve against the tension of the spring. If more than a measured charge is desired the pestle may be operated as indicated in Fig. 3. If it is desired to empty the reservoir 3 the valve may be maintained in an open position as clearly indicated in Fig. 3.
In Fig. 2 it is to be noted that the valve stem I I exactly fits the valve seat outlet and cuts off the exit of mercury 4 from the reservoir 3 so that the stem II serves as a sliding cut-off valvewhereas the valve head I2 operates as or similar to a poppet valve of an internal combustion engine.
It is also to be noted that the inclined end 9 of the pestle body I serves as a stop to prevent excessive range of movement of the diaphragm I6 as shown in Fig. 2.
When it is desired to place the pestle in an out of use position it may be inverted and supported in that position on a substantially horizontal support thereby using the ring H as a base.
While I have described my pestle as being particularly useful in connection with the dispensing of mercury over a pestle body it appears to bev self evident that it could be used for dispensing other liquids as well as powdered material.
Having fully disclosed my said invention what I claim is:
