SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,338, dated October 18, 1881.
Application filed April 3, 1880. (Model) .To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN E. MoYER, ofMiddleville, in the county ofBarry and State ofMichigan,haveinventedanew and useful Improvement in Bob-Sleighs; and it consists in the construction and arrangement ofparts hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
Referring to thedrawings, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of a bolster and sandboard for bobsleighs embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the sand-board plate with its inclosed ball, and Fig. 3 is a bottom view ofthe bolster with its plate attached. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the entire sleigh; and Fig. 5 is a front view, illustrating the action of the bob when one runner is elevated above the other, as hereinafter described.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in all the figures.
A represents the bolster; B, the sand-board or base-board secured to the frame-work of the sleigh, and G the king-bolt.
The bolster is provided with the usual slot, at, for the reception of the reach-iron or connecting-bar of the rear bob of a sleigh, and with a bearing-plate, a, secured to the bolster in the usual manner.
The sand or base board plate consists of two portions, 1) I), having a suitable cavity in each portion, to receive and retain, when secured together by the bolts 1), a ball, D, which loosely fits said cavity, and is provided with an aper-- ture larger than and for the reception of the king-bolt 0, like apertures being provided in the bolster-plate a and sand or base board plates 1) and b.
The operation of my device is as follows: Upon a level road or track the parts above described assume and retain the relative positions shown; but when one runner mounts an elevation or enters a depression, the other remaining level, there is a twisting or wrenching action of the parts, which, without my improved devices, is expended upon the reach, which, in consequence thereof, is sometimes split or broken; but with my improved devices this result is obviated by an oscillatory movement of the bolster and sand or base board relatively to each other, the center of oscillation being at one side of the center of the ball D, as clearly shown at Fig. 5.
Suppose, for instance, the right runner descends into a depression in the track; the sand or base board B drops at its right end away from the bolster A, while the left end of the sand-board sustains the load, the loosely-fitting ball and king-bolt permitting this movement. WVhen reaching level ground the parts return to their normal positions, and the load has thus been retained in a level condition, and the reach relieved from unusual strain or twisting. The benefits of this construction are also markedly evident in the act of turning from a straight course when the bolster and sand or base plates approach a crossed position.
Having disclosed and described my invention, what- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the bolster and sand-board of a vehicle, of a loosely-socketed king-bolt, a perforated ball and a socket for the same, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the bolster A and king-bolt Owith the sand or base board B, provided with a socketed ball, D, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the bolster A, provided with slot (1, plate a, and loosely-fitting king-bolt O, with the sand or base plate b I), inclosing the ball D, substantially as shown and described.
