2 Claims.
The present invention relates generally to new, useful and improved molds and more "particularly to a mold for making novelty toys, such as cradles or the like.
An important object of the invention Is to provide a mold of this character by means of Which the article is cast as a unitary structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mold having hingedly connected dies for molding a toy cradle or the like in a single operation.
A further object is to provide a mold WhlCh 1s relatively inexpensive to manufacture, durable in construction and one that can be easily put into operation due to the simplicity thereof.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings form ng part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention showing the die placed in closed position.
Figure 2 is a side elevationa1 view thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the invent1on in an open position.
Figure 4 is a perspective View showing the invention in open position.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the removable top die, and
Figure 6 is a perspective View of the finished product.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 represents a base plate having an upwardly extending rectangular post 6 which is integrally cast to the base plate.
A pair of die or matrix plates 1 are secured at their lower ends 8 to the longer sides of the post by the hinges 9. The outer surfaces of the plates 1 are screwed and have a cross member H at the upper end l2 thereof which extends slightly beyond the side edges of the plates. The cross member is secured to the plates in any suitable manner. Also formed on the outer surface of the plates are a pair of lugs l3 whose outer edges M are in vertical alignment with the side edges of the plates.
On the inner surface of the plates 1 are formed die or matrix grooves I! for forming the sides ll of a cradle as shown in Figure 6. A pouring groove 15 is also formed on the inner surface of the plates 1 communicating with the grooves I l and extending to the upper edge of the plates.
A pair of relatively small lugs l8 extend inwardly from the upper end of the inner surface of the plates 7 and extending through the lower portion of the plates is an opening I 9 aligned with an opening |9a extending horizontally through the post and in which a conventional wing bolt inserted. The bolt 20 secures the plates 1 to the post in a raised position against the sides of the post.
A second pair of plates 2| are secured at their lower edges to the shorter side of the post by hinges 23. The outer surface of plates 2| are smooth and the inner surfaces thereof are likewise formed with die or matrix grooves 21 for forming the ends 26 of the cradle. The upper inner surface of plates 2| are likewise formed with poun'ng grooves 24 communicating with the rooves 21.
Notches 28 are formed in the side edges of the plates 2| for receiving a bolt and wing nut 29. The upper end 20 of plates 2| are formed with notches 3| which receive the end 32 of cross member II when plates 7 and 2| are in raised position, the plates 2| then resting against the side edges of the plates 1 and against the edges of lugs l3.
The upper edges of plates 1 and 2| project above the post 6 when in their raised position to receive a top plate 33 therein which rests on top of post 6 and is substantially equal in area therewith. The top plate 33 is formed on its inner surface with die or matrix grooves 36 for forming the bottom 35 of the crib.
The sides of top plate 33 are formed with recesses 31 for receiving the lugs l8 of the plates 1.
In the operation of the device the top plate 33 is first placed on top of the post 6 with the matrix grooves 36 resting on top of the post. The plates 1 are then raised so that the lugs |8 engage recesses 31 in the top plate and the bolt 20 is then inserted through the openings l9 and [9a, to secure the plates in their raised position. Plates 2| are then raised and bolt 29 inserted in the notches 28 to secure the plates 2| against the post.
Molten metal or other material is then poured in the top of the device through the pouring grooves 5 and 24, the metal then flowing into the matrix grooves of the plates. After the metal has cooled the bolts 20 and 29 are removed and the plates 1 and 2| lowered and top plate 33 lifted from the post leaving the cradle or other finished product resting on top of the post and which then may be readily and easily removed therefrom.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully compre hended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1 A mold comprising a post having flat smooth sides and a flat smooth top, a top matrix plate having bottom die grooves therein and'removably fitting flat intermediate said grooves on the top of the post, and a pair of side matrix plates hinged to said sides of the post to swing upwardly against said sides of the post and against opposite sides of said top plate, said side matrix plates having die grooves therein and fitting fiat intermediate said grooves against said sides of the post to close the die grooves in said side matrix plates, said side matrix plates and the top of the post closing the die grooves in the top matrix plate, and means to lock said side matrix plates in upswung position.
2 A mold comprising a post having fiat smooth sides and a flat smooth top, a top matrix plate having bottom die grooves therein and removably fitting flat intermediate said grooves on the top of the post, and a pair of side matrix plates hinged to said sides of the post to swing upwardly against said sides of the post against opposite sides of said top matrix plate, said side and matrix plates having die grooves therein and fitting flat intermediate said grooves against said sides of the post to close the die grooves in said side matrix plates, said side matrix plates and the top of the post closing the die grooves in the top matrix plates, means to lock said side matrix plates in upswung position, and means for interlocking said top matrix plate with and between said side matrix plates to lock the top matrix plate ofi said post.
