'Various products may be handled by the "iineans and methods of this invention, such as, for example',' 1butter,' shortening; .oleomargaiina ice cream, cheese, candy" and various confections, dried or glazed fruit; salads, gelatins, e tc., and the sizeand proportions of the container canva;ry somewhat with the bulkiness' :of the material which is being packagedfo'r distribution. In-the illustrative forms described hereafter and shown in the drawings; particular reference' is m -a'de to'a package whichhas been found particularlyeflective -for use in'distributing ice cream, cheese and the like.
By referring to Figs. Ito 5, it will be noted that the container itself may-be mad'e fr-om' four' elements, naimely;-a cover wrapper I, a liner -2 ,:a top liner 3 and a top cover i. It is-t0 be notedjalso, that each of these elements is'c'ut iromasu'bstantiallyflat and square sh eet'ofsu itablematerial so that there is very little waste oimaterial and the largest possible number of wrappers, liners, -et'c.,- can be out from a continuous sheet of' ma- The cover wrapper I and the top cover 4 may be made from a heavier grade of paper, this paper being suitably lithographed or printed on its exterior and if desired coated with paraffin or other wax, a resinous thermoplastic or thermosetting material, etc. Water-resistant or waterproof coatings are desirable whenever the contents are of a character which may mold or which are semiliquid or require placement of the container in refrigerators during storage. and the top liner 3 may be made of material lighter in weight; Pliofilm, which is a rubber-containing thermosetting product having waterproof characteristics, or any other suitable pachmentized, oil-treated, waxed or even untreated material can be used.
The cover wrapper I is substantially square, in fiat form, and has a central field delineated by the score marks Ill, II, etc. This central field as shown is octagonal. Surrounding this octagonal field are side portions including the portions I2, I3, I4, etc. The corner portions I2, I4 and. the like are provided with enlarged stabilizing tangs I5, I6, and the like. The members I3, I3 have short wings I8, I 9 extending therefrom, the edges of said wings, such as the edges 2i! and ZI, being directed toward the score lines defining the octagonal field. The score lines I I], II, and the like which define the field are of equal length and the members I2, I3, I4 and the like are therefore of equal width with the exception that the side members I3 and I3 have the wings I8 and I9 which extend from the parallel score lines '22, 23.
The side members I3 are also provided with 'a cutout portion approximately triangular in form, the base of such triangular cutout portion being directed toward the field. The cut 26 extends from the base line of the triangular portion 25 toward the wings of the member I3.
Attention is also called to the fact that indentations or score lines 21, 28and the like are formed in the stabilizing corner tangs, the fold indentations being parallel to the score lines I0 which delimit the field. I
When a liner is used such as is shown in Fig. 3, such liner is also provided with an octagonal field defined by means of score lines 30, 3|, etc. The field thus defined is preferably just a little smaller than the field of the cover wrapper I. Perpendicular to these score lines 30 and. 3| are other -fold lines, such as 32, 33, 34, and the like,
defining side portions. A score line 38 also parallels the line '31 at a distance equivalent to the height of the final side wall of the container.
The edges 40 and M of the liner 2 are connected by means of the score line 36 so as to define a large octagonal field, the score line 36 being continued by a cut edge 32. Fold lines or score lines are also provided at 43, 44, 45, etc., these being directed to the points of intersection of the fold lines 3!] and 3 I. The corner tang is shown in a partially raised position so as to emphasize and disclose the manner in which the liner is folded along the various score lines during formation of a container.
The top liner 3, shown in Fig. 4, may be substantially square as shown and be provided with tab portions 50, SI, 52, which come into existence when the top liner 3 is folded along the score lines 53, 54, and the like. The top cover, shown in Fig. 4, is substantially square but the corners thereof are marked with the indented or scored lines 55, 56, and the like, said score lines together with the edges 5! and 58 defining an octagonal field. The locking tangs 59, 60 and BI may be The inner liner 2 or iii provided with enlarged triangular heads having shoulder portions, such as 62 and 63. The total width of this locking tang at the shoulder portions should be substantially equivalent or very slightly smaller than the length of the out line 26, exclusive of the base of the aperture 25 in the cover wrapper I.
The elements described can be best combined to form a package by the use of a machine such as is shown in Figs. 6, '7 and 8. The cover wrapper I, and if desired the liner 2, may be fed into the machine in superimposed relation immediately on top of a series of forming heads III, II, I2 and the like adjustably carried upon a stationary ring or frame I3. The forming heads are circularly arranged in spaced relation and in a horizontal plane. The various forming heads lIl, II, 12 are arranged with their axes at to each other, the presser plates I8, II and '12 thus forming an incomplete square. Each of the forming heads may be adjustably mounted in the frame I3 and may be movable toward the center of such square along milled slots or guides in the frame I3, the heads being positionable by means of locking bolts such as 74. Each of the forming heads is provided with a presser plate which is mounted upon a stem I5 having an adjustment nut I6 and such plates are yieldably urged toward the center of the square by means of springs 11 (see Fig. 8). These presser plates are also provided with wings, such as the wings I8, l9, which are triangular in form, being broader and wider at the top and converging to a point at the bottom as best shown in Figs. 6 and 8. The total width of the presser plates at the top (including the wings) should be approximately the same as the length of the edges I! of the cover wrapper whereas the base of the presser plates 72' should be approximately equivalent to the width of the material along the score line I I.
Immediately below the set of forming heads it, II, etc. is another series of forming heads til, 8!, and the like, these forming heads, being also mounted for radial adjustment and being spaced from each other so as to work along lines bisecting the angles between adjacent upper forming heads. For example, the forming head 88 is positioned so as to operate along the line bisecting the line ofmovement of the upper forming heads 10 and TI. Adjustment means are indicated at 82. Each of the forming heads 80, BI and the like is provided with a presser plate 88, SI and the like mounted in a manner similar to that in which the upper forming plates are carried.
The faces of the various presser plates iii, 83, II, etc. should form a well approximately octagonal in cross-section and similar in size to thesize of the field of the cover wrapper I. An octagonal plunger 9% is provided of a size slightly smaller than the octagonal field of the cover wrapper and provided with means for reciprocally moving the plunger through the well formed by the various presser heads into a mold 9|. Vertical bores 92 may be provided in the plunger 9!) to provide means for releasing air. When the cover wrapper is made of a material capable of adhering or cohering to the liner or to itself in the presence of heat, the plunger {it may be provided with heating elements 93, 94, 95, 96 and the like set into the vertical faces of said plunger for the purpose of supplying heat to desired areas of the cover wrapper and liner as such cover wrapper and/or liner is bent and folded by the downward movement of the plunger 98 through the series of forming heads and into the mold 9i.

Fig. 16 shows a modified form of liner provided with score lines I35 defining a central field of octagonal shape. This field is bounded by e. .rn'arginal portion of uniform width whereby a larger octagonally shaped sheet is defined. Fig. 20 shows the position assumed by the stabilizing tangs I23 after they have been bent in so as to cover the top liner Ml.
Fig. 21 is a plan view of the top cover M2 and it is to be noted that said top cover is substantially square but has its corners marked with diagonally directed score lines I43, these score lines, together with the edges I44, delineating an octagonal field. The corner locking tangs I45 thus formed have marginal edges I46 disposed substantially at right angles and locking shoulders I41. The total width of these locking tangs between the shoulders should not exceed the length of the out line I33 formed in the side flaps I28 of the cover wrapper.
This top cover I42 is applied in a manner similar to that previously described and the completed package is shown in Fig. 22. It is to be noted that the shoulders IQ! of the locking tangs M cooperate with the edge formed by the out line I33 so as to lock the top cover M2 in position.
It will thus be seen that the complete package is formed by the use of inexpensive flat sheets of suitable material and that the machine disclosed herein makes it possible for the blanks to be formed into a container, filled and sealed progressively in a minimum time. In the event the inner or outer surfaces of the outer wrapper are coated with a thermoplastic or thrmosetting composition, then there is no necessity of employ ing locking tangs on the top cover and simply tabs insertable into slots cut in the side flaps of the bottom wrapper are sumcient since the application of heat to the overlapped areas of the bottom wrapper will cause the bottom wrapper to maintain its position with respect to the cover due to the action of the thermosetting coating.
The automatic continuous form of machine described herein permits the formed containers to be moved past a filling station and into operative relation with the sealing device. The packages can be removed from the container molds either manually or automatically. Obviously, the various motions, such as the downward motion of the plunger, the forward intermittent motion of the conveyor, and the intermittent action of the sealing mechanism including its ejector, are suitably mechanically interlocked and correlated; such correlation between the elements disclosed comes within the skill of the engineering arts and need not be described indetail herein. All changes, modifications and adaptations coming within the scope of the appended claims are embraced thereby.
It is to be understood that the machine disclosed herein may be used in the formation of containers provided with a liner or without a liner, depending upon the character and consistency of the commodity being packed. 'Al though particular reference has been made to ice cream heretofore, glazed or dried fruits and other commodities may be handled in packages ;of the character disclosed herein.
said container arranged around said openin in spaced relation to each other at a lower level than said first named forming heads, plunger means adapted to move downwardly through said opening to engage and carry said container blanks of sheet material through said opening and successively between forming heads at the two levels, whereby said blanks may be folded with a bottom and side wall sections and with gussets folded between and lying against the contiguous side wall sections to assume the configuration of the mold and to be deposited therein.
2. A machine for folding and depositing an imperforate container blank within a forming mold of polygonal shape, comprising a forming table having an opening therein, a plurality of forming heads arranged around said opening in spaced relation to each other in a common plane to agree with alternate side wall sections of the container, a plurality of additional forming heads to agree with the intermediate side wall sections of the container and arranged around said opening in spaced relation to each other in a common plane and at a lower level than said first named forming heads, said forming heads collectively agreeing in number and spacing with the side walls of a container to be formed, adjustable yielding forming shoes carried by a part at least of said forming heads, plunger means adapted to move downwardly through said table opening and to engage and carry the imperforate container blank of sheet material through said opening and successively between said forming heads at the two levels, whereby the side walls of the blank will be folded at right angles to the bottom of the blank and gussets occuring between contiguous side wall sections will be formed and folded against the faces of said sections preparatory to being positioned within said forming mold.
3. A machine for folding and depositing an imperforate container blank within a forming mold, said blank being a fiat pre-cut sheet, including an octagonal body field and outwardly extending side wall fields adapted to be bent into planes at right angles to the plane of the body field with intervening gusset sections between the contiguous side wall fields, the machine comprising a set of forming heads circularly disposed in spaced relation in a common substantially horizontal plane to agree with alternate side wall sections, a plunger adapted to reciprocate between the forming heads, said plunger having a configuration to register with the octagonal field of the blank and to move the blank downwardly between said forming heads, whereby alternate side portions of said blank are folded, a second set of forming heads disposed in a lower horizontal plane and adapted to engage intermediate side portions of a blank passing therebetween to fold them upwardly with their intermediate ussets in overlapping relation to said alternate side portions of the blank to form a container and which formed container is then moved by the plunger into a forming mold.
l. A machine for forming polygonal shaped containers within a forming mold, which comprises. a forming table having an opening therethrough and above Which an imperiorate fiat sheet container blank is disposed, a plunger of polygonal shape agreeing with the configuration of the container to be formed and being normally disposed above said table and adapted to be moved downwardly through the opening therein and to carry said blank with it, a plurality of forming heads agreeing with alternate side wall sections of the container and in a common plane disposed around said opening and over which the blank is placed, said forming heads registering with facets of said plunger and acting upon alternate side wings of the blank to fold the same upwardly as the plunger and blank move downwardly therebetween, a second set of forming heads disposed in a common plane beneath that of the first mentioned forming heads and acting upon the unfolded intermediate wings 1 and to fold intermediate gusset sections against contiguous wings of the blank to fold said wings upwardly with relation to the first mentioned set of blank Wings as the plunger continues its downward movement, during which time the plunger moves the blank into a forming mold.
5. A machine for forming containers by folding the same and placing them in a forming mold, which containers are formed from a blank comprising a polygonal body field bounded by, a plurality of wings, one joined to each of' the sides of said polygonal field and to each other along contiguous edges to provide a gusset section designed to overlap contiguous side wings when folded, which machine includes a forming table having a polygonal shaped opening therethrough agreeing with and through which the polygonal field of the blank may pass, a plunger of similar polygonal shape disposed above said forming table and adapted to reciprocate through said opening and to register with the polygonal field of the blank to move it downwardly, a set of forming heads disposed in a common upper plane and engaging alternate wings of the blank which must be first folded upwardly in forming the container, a set of forming heads in a second common plane adapted to engage intermediate wings of the blank as the plunger carries the blank downwardly between them and folds them upwardly with the gussets occurring between their contiguous marginal edges folded in overlapping relation to the first folded set of wings, whereby further downward movement of the plunger will place the folded blank within a forming mold.
6. A machine for forming containers from sheet material and depositing them in a forming mold, said containers being formed from an imperforate sheet container blank comprising a polygonal body field bounded by a plurality of separate wings forming side walls of the container and intermediate foldable gussets overlapping at contiguous edges of the wall wings when folded at right angles to the body field, and a liner having a polygonal body field corresponding to the polygonal body of the container blank and being formed with a plurality of interconnecting wall wings corresponding in number and shape with the wall wings of the body blank and having intermediate foldable gussets, which machine includes a forming table having a polygonal shaped opening therethrough substantially agreeing with the shape of the body field of the blanks, a plunger above said table corresponding in configuration with the body field adapted to reciprocate through said opening, a set of forming heads disposed in an upper common plane and above which the container blank and the liner blank are disposed in register, the liner blank being uppermost, said forming heads engaging alternate wings of the blank as the plunger moves downwardly, whereby one set of wings of the container blank and the liner blank will be folded upwardly, a second set of forming heads in a lower common plane adapted to engage the intermediate unfolded wings of the blank and to fold them upwardly and in overlapping relation to the contiguous edge portions of the first folded set of wings and simultaneously folding the liner within the container blank with the gusset portions folded into interengaging relation with the folded gussets at the edge of the wall wings of the blanks and folded there against, whereby the formed container may be carried downwardly by the plunger into a forming mold.
