` G. H. W. GURTIS.
SEWING MACHINE.
No. 248,293. Patented Oct. 18,1881.
I NVBNTOR 2 WITNESSBS 2 UETERS. Pimm-Lnnunnwh-u. wash-muuu. D C.
NrTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. W. CURTIS, OFv BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SEWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,293, dated October 18. 1881.
Application filed July 9, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI I, GEORGE H. W. CURTIS, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machines, which is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved machine; Fig. 2, a longitudinal central section at the line :r .r of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a view of the feed-cam, Fig. 4, a side view ofthe gage; Fig. 5, a view of the cords partly sewed together.
The object of my in-vention is to form a dat bra-id by sewing two or more cords together by a straight stitch passing through them sidewise, and the improvements are to be found in the devices for holding the cords one above another, and so presenting them to 'the needle, and for feeding them forward.
rIhe cords a a u. are led through separate openings b b b in adjustable gage A, secured to plate B by screws c c, and between it and adjustable gage O, also secured to plate B by screw d and guide-pin e beneath presser-foot D, so that needle E in itsdeseent will pass through them and leave its loop beneath, to be taken bythe pointof rotary-hook F in the formation of a stitch in the ordinary way. As
(No model.)
the needle rises feed G, secured to platef b v pin g, platefbeing affixed to sliding block K by screws h h, is carried forward by pin O coming through plate B into feed G. Pin O is secured to block t' upon the usual feed-bar, l, operated bythe main shaft I. As shaft I re volves, cant H forces sliding block K back and so releases feed G, and feed-bar l retreating, as is usual in sewing-machines, carries pin O and feed G back at the same time; cam H, releasingsliding block K, springp', through block K and platef, returns feed G into contact with cords a a a. tor the next stitch. As feed G is always pressed forward by spring p when needle E is out of the cords, to facilitate their introduction between gages A and C, cam S is located in contact i'th sliding platej', by which it and feed G may be readily moved hack.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cotnbination'of feed Gand adjustable gages A and C, constructed and operating together substantially as and for the purpose described.
GEORGE H. IV. CURTIS.
