STITCH REGULATING AND FEEDING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,955, dated April 1%, 1885.

Be it known that I, EDWARD MURPHY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stitch-Regulating Indicating Devices for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the devices employed for indicating the length of stitch or number of stitches to the inch which the feed mechanism of a sewing-machine has been adjusted to produce.
It consists in combining with the mechanism by which the movement of the feed-bar is controlled, and the length of the stitch consequently regulated, an indicatingslide mov' ing under or within an elongated slot in the cloth-plate of the machine, and actuated by means of a radial arm projecting from a camshaft, by which the play of the feed device is controlled, the position of the slide serving, by reference to the scale upon the edge of the slot or upon the slide itself, to indicate accurately the number of stitches to the inch which the position of the feed device will insure.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation in perspective of the feed mechanism of a sewing-machine, in combination with my improved form of indicator, the cloth-plate of the machine being partly broken away 3 and Fig. 2, a vertical section taken longitudinally through the shaft of the stitch regulating device.
A represents the cloth-plate; O, the reciprocating oscillating feedbar, actuated by the main shaft; and D, a cam, against which the end of the feed-barabutsin its longitudinallyreciprocating movement, and which determines the extent of said movement, and consequently the play of the feed-bar and length of the stitch.
The stitch-regulating cam D is fitted upon a shaft, E, terminating in an actuating-lever, F, (see Fig. 2,) the shaft being supported in suitable bearings under the cloth-plate, so that the cam is brought into line with the feed-bar and into contact therewith.
K is an elongated slot or opening formed in the cloth'plate A, within or beneath which a slide or indicating plate, H, is fitted to reciprocate longitudinally. so as to carry an index-pointer, z, upon the plate, over or along the margin of a stitchindicating scale, G, marked upon the cloth-plate along the edge of the opening K. If preferred, the scale may be marked upon the face of the slide H, so as to be visible through the opening K, an index point or mark being fixed upon the edge of the opening.
One end of the slide H is made to extend over the cam-shaft E at right angles thereto, so as to be engaged by an arm, L, Fig. 2, projecting radially from the shaft, and which may constitute an extension of the stitch-regulating lever F, as shown in Fig 2. Hence any movement of the lever F and cam Dto adjust the position of the latter with reference to the feed-bar, and determine its movement, and thereby regulate the feed and the length of the stitch, will operate to slide the indicatingplate in the one direction or the other, and thus move the indicator back or forth over the scale. The operator is thereby enabled, by simply moving the cam-lever F until the indicator points to the number on the indicating-scale, designating the stitches to the inch required for the special work in hand, to adjust the feed so that this number of stitches shall be made by the machine.
I do not claim, broadly, a movable scale or index actuated by the cam controlling the play of the feed device in a sewing-machine and visible through an opening in the cloth-plate; and I am aware that a stitch-reguiating cam bearing upon its periphery numbers indicating the stitches to the inch has been arranged in a sewing machine so that its numbered edge may be seen through an open slot in the clothplate. My improvement differs therefrom in that the numbers and index are brought more clearly and distinctly into view in a position on the plate where they may at all times be readily seen when required, and with the least inconvenience to the operator.
I claim as my invention The combination, with the cloth-plate of a sewing-machine provided with an elongated slot, and with the cam-shaft and cams controlling the play of the feed device of the machine, of a reciprocating slide moving longi tudinally within or beneath said slot, to be visible through the same, a scale upon the edge of the cloth-plate adjacent to the slot,
