Description
Sept. 20, 1949. w. G. SHEARER FILE HOLDER OR GUIDE Filed Jan. 5, 1948 -INVVENTOR. WaH-Er E1 Shea-Par I ATTORNEYS.
Patented Sept. 20, 1949 "UNITED? I r 524825215 FILE HOLDER on GUIDE in my application'sSerial:No.':562.. filedJanuary 1948. g In filing saws, particularly circular saws, various types of triangular, flat and round files are required in order to shape and sharpen the saw teeth, whichnot. only require the. inclination, bevel and pitch angles of the filestobe accurately controlled but in many instances require shaping along curved surfaces. "In-said application it has been set forth that the filing device is equipped to holdthe files atvariousjadjusted angles-oi inclination, bevel. and pitch thru ;.the instrumentality ofa ,file holdenwhichis. guided in aislotted guide held atsuoh angles, as required byqa, saw to be filed. The present invention particularly relates to the file holder for that purpose, tho not necessarily limited thereto.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide such a file holder which is provided with what might be termed universal gripping means for holding different types of files so as to extend longitudinally therefrom as will be set forth in detail.
Further features, objects and advantages of my invention will appear in the following detailed description supplemented by the accompanying drawings illustrating a highly satisfactory embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings:
Figs. 1 and 2 are perspective views of the file holder in accordance with my invention, the views being taken from opposite ends of the holder to more fully illustrate the structure at the clamp end thereof.
Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof showing a triangular file held by the holder.
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a similar horizontal sectional view of that part of the holder without the file and clamping screw. 7
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary horizontal transverse sectional view similar to Fig. 5, with the end of a fiat type of file gripped in the holder clamp.
Fig. 8 is a perspective YEW of an adapter fol awe me 5, 1 94s'serialNo. 5.63 whi cooperating-with thefile holder for gripping the shankendof'afiler- I. 4,. s
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary-horizontal transverse sectional view, similar to fig. 5- withfthe adapter andthe-shankendofrag flat file gripped in the hql lf- H Referring to the drawings in general the file holder-in accordanceawithmyginvention comprises a; longitudinal shank or; bar ll 0; of uniform rectangular crosssectionfor sliding in the :file guide member of the device ;f orfiling circular saws'as set'forth inzmy aforesaid copending application, or for; other uses such asa file handle. The file h ins' n u fsba lllv slpmv e W mp 5 H and is slotted at lz for cooperatin with the amp, and, aniadap enonke per; 3 :shown in i fi may a so c perate the h.- 1 a 7,.
The file holding clamp ll comprises a channel shaped element with its ends I4 welded to the sides of bar l0 adjacent to its end as best shown in Fig. 4, and the mid upper portion has a threaded aperture therethru for receiving a clamping screw l5 so positioned as to engage a portion of a file I6, for holding it in the slot l2 in the end of bar l0 underlying clamp II.
In saw filing for sharpening the teeth various types of triangular files are employed in most instances so as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 6, slot I2 is tapered to conform with the surfaces of such a triangular file l6 so that the third side ll of file i6 is in a horizontal position for engagement by the inner end of clamping screw l5.
Thus with file H5 in clamped position and provided with a handle [8 as shown in Fig. 3 the file is equipped with the holder for use in the device for filing saws or it may be employed as a handle or the like.
The file holder is adapted to grip a flat file [9 with equal facility as shown in Fig. 7. The sides 20 of this file engage the sides of clamp II and clamping screw l5 maintains the file in the required position.
As shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the adapter or keeper l 3 is provided for gripping the shank or tang end 2| of a file 22 as may be desired in some instances for operating it in a saw filing device, a flat file for jointing operations, or as a handle for a file 22 extending from its shank 2|. The adapter l3 as shown comprises a longitudinal metal plate having downwardly extending projections 24 at one end which engage the sides of bar IU of the file holder. Adjacent the same end are inner upwardly extending projections 25 which may be struck up from the plate element as shown. These latter projections 25 are adapted to engage the sides of file shank 2| adjacent its end and when clamping screw I5 is turned into place engaging file shank 2| at a distance therefrom, the file is securely held in the holder.
The file holder thus is adapted for holding various types of files operating as a holder for a saw filing device, a handle or otherwise.
I claim:
1. A file holder comprising, an elongated rectangular bar, a channel shaped clamping member having a web portion'between depending side fianges, means integrally connecting the inner edges of the flanges of said clamping member to the edges of the bar at one end thereof so as to provide a longitudinal slot above the bar, ends clamping screw element extending, thru the, web portion of said channel member toward theupper side of the bar for engaging and clampinga'file therein, said bar under said channel shaped clamping member having a downwardly tapered slot eXtending longitudinally therethrough, through which the'lower edge portion' of a triangular file will project when secured in the holder by the clamping screw.
2. A file holder comprising, an elongated rectangular bar, a channel shaped clamping member integrally connected to one end of said bar so as to providealongitudinalslot above the bar, said bar havin'g'a' tapered'longitudinal slot extending entirely throughth'ehd'of the bar underlying said channel" member for engagement with two sides of atriarigularfile and a clamping screw element extending thru 'tliehi'idportion of said channel member towardthe' slot in'the bar for engaging theother side of'thetriangular file and clamping the file therein;
3. A file holder comprising, an elongated rec tangular bar, a channel shaped clamping mem her integrally connected to one end of said bar so as to provide a longitudinal slot above the bar, a clamping screw element extending thru the mid portion of said channel member toward the side of the bar for engaging and clamping a file therein, an adapter for engaging the tang end of a file beyond the clamping means comprising a 1onitudinal plate member insertable in said channel slot formation, and means extending from said plate for engaging the sides of a file tang adjacent to its end.
4. In a combination with a file holder compris ing an elongated rectangular bar, a channel shaped clamping member integrally connected to one end of said bar so as. to, provide a longitudinal slot above the bar, and a "clamping screw element extending thru the mid portion of said channel member toward the side of the bar for engaging and clamping a file therein, an adapter for holding andcfentering the tang end of a file longitudinally of the bar comprising a longitudinal plate member for overlying the bar and extending one end into the clamping channel, said bar at its other end having lateral lugs extending downwardly so as to engage ,the sides of the bar, and a pair of lugs struck upwardly from the central portion 'of said plate adjacent to the same end for engaging the sides of a file tang end and cooperating with the clamping screw for maintaining the file in a longitudinally extending'direction from the file holder.
