s PATENT OFFICE The present invention relatesgenerally to split ingot molds and is particularly concerned with the mold latch or fastener.
The present invention aims to. provide a two part ingot mold with a fastening means or latch which may be manipulated with great facility and which, when in closed or locked position, serves to secure the two parts of the mold firmly together and in proper alinement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent to persons skilled in the art from the following specification and the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention; it being understood that variations thereof falling'within the scope of the principle of the invention and of the appended claims may be had. 1 3 In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mold employing the latch of the present invention. The ingot mold shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises the two parts 2|] and 2| pivoted at 22. In use the mold stands firmly on the base of the part 20 while the part 2| has an inclined bottom face which permits its movement from the close position shown in Figure 1 to the open position in Figure 2.
For receiving the molten metal it is desirable that the two parts should be firmly secured together in a manner to draw the abutting edges of the two parts together and also properly to aline the parts. It is also desirable that the latch means 1 Claim. (01. 22-446) should be simple and rugged in construction and should be manipulable withease.
For these purposes the present latch comprises a latching element, which, when moved into closed or latching position serves to draw the parts of the mold toward each other.
The lock plate 25 has an integral base plate 24 secured to the side wall of the part 20 in the manner shown so that when the parts 20, 2| are in closed position the base plate 24 will overlap the side wall of the part 2|.
The latch is duplicated on the opposite side wall of the mold. The two latch plates 25 and base plates 24 thus serve to maintain th two parts of the mold in proper alinement.
The plate 25 is provided with a keyhole 25..
- The part 2| has secured near its front edge the block 21 having a threaded passage. The latch is in the form of a screw 28 passing through the threaded passage in the block 21. It is provided at its operating end with a shank 29 carrying the locking pin 30.
At the other end the screw latch carries a handle 3| keyed to the screw latch. The stop lu 32 which is mounted on the front face of the mold part 2| extends to the position shown to engage the weighted downward extension 33 of the handle 3| and stop its unlatching movement in the position in which the locking pin 30 is in registry with the keyhole 26, thus allowing withdrawal of the shank 29 and locking pin 30 through the keyhole 26 during the opening movement of the mold part 2|. The weighted extension 33 serves to retain the latch screw in the open or unlatched position.
When it is desired to close and latch the mold the operator moves the mold part 2| from position shown in Figure 2 to the position shown in Figure 1 and moves the handle 3| from the position shown in the direction of the arrow. By this left handed movement the screw latch 28 is drawn outwardly from the block 21 and the looking pin 30 is rotated to a substantially horizontal position as it is drawn toward the face of the bracket 25. A quarter turn of the handle 3| will suflice to bring the locking pin 30 into firm engagement with the bracket thereby drawing the mold parts 20, 2| toward each other. The frictional engagement of the locking pin against the bracket assists in maintaining the latch in its latched position.
This latch organization is duplicated on the other side of the mold.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 9 to 13 the duplicate latch structures on the two sides of the mold are substantially identical with the structure in Figures 1 to 8 with minor modifications. Thus the keyhole in the bracket 25 is disposed horizontally; the handle 3| does not have any downward extension; and the stops 32 are eliminated. In the modification shown in Figure 9 both latches 3| are operated by the single handle 40.
The handle 40 with its integral collar 4| and integral arms 42 rotate on the stud 43 mounted on the back of the mold part 2|. pivotally connected to arm 42 and to the handles 3|. Stop pin 45 limits the movement of arm 40 in one direction and stop pin 46 limits its movement in the opposite direction,
In the position shown in Figure 9 the screw latches 29 are both in the locked or latched position. To unlatch the handle 40 is moved in the direction of arrow 41, this will move handles 3| away from stop pins 48 and the screw latches will move a quarter turn into the blocks 21 so that the locking pins 30 will assume the position shown in Figure 12. When the mold half 2| is moved the latches and locking pins will be withdrawn through the keyholes 2B. The pin 46 supports the handle 48. When the mold half 2| is moved to closed position, the handle 40 is moved to vertical position, which rotates the screws 28 left handedly for a quarter turn and the locking pins 30 are drawn against the plate 25 to secure the mold firmly.
In operation, the tender or operator will grip both handles 3| with his hands and will operate them at the same time in one direction or the other, whether to open or close, and in the same operation the operator will move the mold half 2! from one position to the other. In the modification shown in Figure 9 these operations are performed with one hand.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is:
Links 44 are In combination, an ingot mold having two pivotally connected halves and duplicate latching means on opposite sides of the mold for securely holding the same in closed position; each of said latching means comprising a plate secured to one of said halves and having a keyhole, a block carried by the other half and having a. threaded passage in alinement with said keyhole, a screw latch in said passage having a transverse lock pin at one end, the other end of said screw carrying a handle; said screw latch having one position in which its lock pin is in registry with said keyhole to permit its entry and withdrawal therefrom by the relative pivotal movement of one mold half, the lock pin in this position being spaced from the cooperating face of said plate when inserted into the keyhole; said screw latch having another position in which the lock pin is disposed transversely of the keyhole and presses firmly against the cooperating face of the lock plate upon rotation of said screw latch for drawing and securing the mold halves togather; a common rotary handle mounted on the front face of one of said halves, and links connecting said common handle to said first named handles, whereby a quarter turn or the common handle will operate both latches a quarter turn.
