CASING FOR CARD REGISTERS OF THE HORIZONTAL TYPE Filed Dec. s, 1945 Patented Aug. 23, 1949 CASING FOR CARD REGISTERS OF THE HORIZONTAL TYPE Vaclav Duspiva, Prague, Czechoslovakia Application December 3, 1945, Serial No. 632,457 ln Czechoslovakia July 2.4, 1940 Section 1, Public Law 690, August 8, 194.6 Pat-ent expires July 24, 1960I 4 Claims.
The horizontal type of card-registers having superposed sliding frames in a common casing, each frame carrying a plurality of registering cards, show the disadvantage that it is relatively difficult to enter the desired data in the individual cards which to this end are not taken out of the respective frames, since each sliding frame assumes a different level, when it is in pulled-out position.
An object of the present invention is to remove the aforesaid difficulty. The invention relates to a card-register casing with horizontal sliding frames, the casing being provided with front guides for the sliding frames, such guides preferably being common to all the frames, and with auxiliary guiding means for each sliding frame, the guides and auxiliary guiding means being arranged in such a way that each sliding frame which has been pulled out from the casing can be positively brought to a predetermined position common to all the frames. The said position is so selected that the desired data may be, conveniently entered in the individual cards of each frame.
The drawing shows schematically and by way of example an embodiment of the card-register casing with horizontal sliding frames in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. l is an end view of the casing showing the frames in vertical section along the line I-I of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a corresponding horizontal section along the line II-II of the Fig. l;
Fig. 3 shows in the left hand part thereof a vertical section along the line III-III of Figs. 1 and 2 while the right hand part shows the front side of the casing as viewed in the direction of the arrow A in Fig. l;
Fig. 4 shows in enlarged scale a corner part of the horizontal section shown in Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawing, and particularly in Fig. l, the common casing or housing I of the card-register comprises a plurality of vertically spaced supporting members, preferably in the form of shelves la, rigidly mounted within the casing for supporting a number of horizontal fiat sliding frames 2 in superposed relationship, each frame containing a plurality of cards for registering purposes. The front faces 3 of the sliding frames 2 are arranged in a common rearwardly inclined plane, as shown in Fig. 1. An axle 4 provided at the rear of each frame 2 carries on either end thereof a guide roller 5, the rollers 5 being arranged to project laterally from the frames and to be guided in the longitudinal side grooves 6 provided on the casing, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In advance of the common front face plane of the sliding frames upstanding guide rails la are mounted on the side walls of the housing I to provide rearwardly facing guide grooves l which are so shaped-as shown in Figs. 2 and 4-that the guiding roller 5V enters the groove from the front side thereof and each frame, when in pulled-out position, is secured against lateral displacement by the said groove 1. Side by side with the guiding rollers E the axle 4 has mounted thereon two inner rollers guide 8 which during the upward and downward movement of the respective frame, when the latter has been withdrawn from the casing, bear against the iront face of the frames, as will be explained hereinafter. Beneath the lowest sliding frame the front face plane of the frames passes into a rounded forwardly extending surface 9 provided by a curved plate mounted on the casing I in spaced relation with respect to the lower ends of the guide rails la for engagement by the rollers 8 when the frames 2 are inserted or withdrawn -from the casing as hereinafter described. Below the lowest sliding frame there are mounted in the casing horizontally slidable bars or retaining hooks Il) adapted to be withdrawn and which are guided beneath the frame and preferably are connected to each other.v The forward ends of the bars I0 are formed with catching means in the form of notches Ilia for engaging the rear part ofthe frames. In order that the front face of all frames may be smooth, without any projecting parts, the operating handles I I of the frames are so arranged as not to extend beyond the front edges of the respective frames.
Preferably the card-register casing is provided with slidable front closure I2 of conventional type which is guided in grooves I3 arranged in the side walls of the easing.
The manipulation with the above described card-register casing is as follows:
That sliding frame 2 in which the desired data are to be entered is drawn out of the casing until the guiding rollers 5 of the same are brought in engagement with the steep side grooves 1, the frame being then left to slide down the grooves 1 to the lowest position. During this movement the supporting rollers 8 slide down the front side of the lower frames which have been left in the casing, until the axle 4 of the rollers 5, 8 engages in the retaining hooks I0. Through the mouth I4 of the guides 1 the frame is then withdrawn to the pulled-out position in which the axle 4 is still engaged in the hooks I0 and the latter are withdrawn from the casing, as shown in Fig. 1. Beneath the casing l there is preferably provided a support I5 which has a pulpit like extension I6 upon which the frame, which has been withdrawn from the casing and moved down, comes to rest in a position convenient for entering the desired inscriptions in the cards. In order to replace the frame in the casing, when the desired data have been duly entered, the frame is pushed inwardly to slide the retaining bars to retracted position and the rollers 8 engage the surface 9 whereupon the frame is caused to move upwards, being positively guided in the side guides 1 and bearing against the front faces 3 of the other frames which have not been withdrawn, until the frame returns to its proper level whereupon it is pushed into the casing along the guides 6. It is clear that when the frames are pulled out of the casing and lowered, all of them are brought to the same position preferably beneath the level of the lowest frame, so that the inscriptions may be effected without any difficulty.
When the height of the card-register casing is rather considerable the arrangement in accordance with the present invention may be carried out in such a manner as to locate the position in which entries are made approximately halfway between the upper and the lower sides of the casing. The sliding frames located above this position are to be lowered to such position when in use, While the lower frames are to be lifted to the position of use. In such a case it would be necessary, of course, to shape the lower part of the steep guides 'I in such a way, that the catches I0 may be by-passed by the lower frames in the course of their upward movement before the latter come to rest in the catches.
Preferably the card-register casing and sliding frames according to the present invention are all made of metal.
By the claimed arrangement the work with horizontal card-registers is made more easy and pleasant, the operations being moreover accelerated due to the positive guiding of the sliding frames, when the latter are being moved to the position in which the entries are to be made, and back into the casing.
What I claim is:
1. In a sliding frame card iile of the horizontal type, a casing having vertically spaced means for independently slidably supporting a plurality of card frames in superposed relation, a plurality of sliding card frames mounted on said supporting means in superposed relation, and having front faces forming a substantially continuous plane surface, upstanding guide rails at each side of said casing vertically coextensive with and forwardly spaced from the surfacev provided by the front faces of said frames, outer and inner guide rollers mounted at the rear of each of said frames adjacent the sides thereof, the outer guide rollers being positioned to engage the respective upstanding guide rails when a frame is withdrawn from the casing and the inner guide rollers being positioned to engage the surface provided by the front faces of the remaining lower frames as the frame so withdrawn is lowered.
2. In a sliding frame card le as dened in claim 1, means providing a forwardly curving surface beneath the lowermost frame in said casing and spaced from the lower ends of said guide rails for engagement by certain of said guide rollers on the sliding frames.
3. In a sliding frame card iile as dened in claim 2, a pair of. horizontally slidable bars mounted in the casing having catching means adjacent the outer ends thereof to engage the rear portion of said sliding card frames when the latter are withdrawn from the casing and lowered to a position to engage the inner guide rollers with said curved surface and disengage the outer guide rollers from said upstanding guide rails.
4. In a sliding frame card le as defined in claim 1, a pair of horizontally slidable bars mounted below the lower ends of said upstanding guide rails in said casing having catching means adjacent the outer ends thereof to engage the rear portion of said sliding card frames when the latter are withdrawn from the casing and lowered to a position to disengage the guide rollers from said guide rails.
