UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD SNYDER AND ISRAEL ADAMs, 0E woRoEsrER, MAssAonUsETTs'.
LOCKING-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,956, dated Qctober 4, 1881.
Application filed July 9,1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD SNYDER and IsRAEL ADAMs, both of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Latches for Doors; and we declare the following to be a description ofour said invention sufticiently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a partof this specification.
The-object of our invention is -to afford a simple and convenient lcckingdoor-latch with a simple guard-catch or dead-lock to prevent the withdrawal of the latch-bolt by the knob devices when required. This object we attain by the mechanism illustrated and hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of our improved locking-latch with the side plate of the case removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same atline 00 :10. Fig. Sis a horizontal section at line y y. Fig. 4 is an inverted horizontal section at line 2 2. Fig. 5 is a side view of the locking-dogs and carrier separate from the other parts, and Fig. 6 is a top-plan view of the same.
In the reference-letters, A denotes the case. B indicates the latch-bolt, arranged to work back and forth by the action of the tumblercylinder O (through which the knob-spindle 0 passes) and the spring 0, arranged within the bolt in the ordinary manner.
Dindicates a sliding carrier or bar arranged below the boltB, and provided with two (more or less) dogs or locking-pieces, D, fulcrurned or pivoted thereto near their centers, as at d, in such manner that their ends can swing up and down with the action of a key,E, inserted at the key-hole E, or by the pressure of the springs f, which are arranged on the carrierpiece D in position to press down the rear ends of said dogs, as illustrated. The rear part of the dogs D are properly recessed to receive the bit of the key E, while their front ends,,l, are turned upward for engagement with recesses or shoulders 1) formed on the latch-bolt B, for locking said bolt in position, the action of the parts being as follows: When the carrierD is set back against the lug or stop a the ends l of the dogs D rest beneath the guidinglug an, located between the latch-bolt and carrier, as shown in full lines, Fig. 1. Then, by turning the key E in-the recess E, the carrier D and dogs D are thrown forward and the springf swings upward, the ends I causing them to enter the recesses I), (see dotted lines, Fig. 1,) thereby preventing the withdrawal of the latch-bolt by means of the knob mechanism until the carrier D and looking-dogs D are thrown back by the key E. The bit of the key E operates against the lower edges of the dogs in opposition to the springs f. Proper variation of keys can be made by varying the form and arrangement of the dogs in relation to the carrier D and key-recess E.
G indicates a device for service as a deadlock or guard to prevent the withdrawal of the bolt or opening of the door from the exterior side when desired. It consists of an auxiliary key'arranged above the bolt B, and having an offset or sidebalanced head, G, and a bit or projection, I, arranged to fall into av depression or behind alug,i,formed in or upon the upper part of the bolt B, in the manner illustrated in Figs-1,2, and 3. When the key G is in position, as shown, the bolt B will be deadlocked. When it is desired that the bolt should work free, simply reverse the position of the key G. The side balanced head, G, retains it in ad justed position.
The bolt B may be provided with recesses b and t at both top and bottom, so that the latch can be reversed for right or left hand use.
We do not herein make claim, broadly, to the locking of a latch-bolt by a key mechanism, as we are aware that such feature has been heretofore embraced in the construction of latches What we claim as of our invention, and de sire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination, as hereinbefore'described, the Latch-bolt B, having recesses 11, the carrier or bolt D, arranged beneath said latch-bolt, and the fixed guide-lug m, the locking dogs or levers D, centrally pivoted on the recessed sides of said carrier and provided with upwardturned ends l for-engagement \viLh the latch- \Vitness our hands this 28th day of Fehru- 1o boll; recesses b and lug m, in the manner and or A. D. 1881. for the purpose set forth.
2. The carrier or bolt D, provided with the pivoted (logs or levers D and springs f, as 1 shown, in combination with the case A, having lugs a m and key-recess E, and the latchbolt B, constructed and relatively arranged for operation as hereinbefore described.
