My invention relates to lifting jacks.
An important object of the invention is to provide a lifting jack which is well adapted for use with automobiles or other motor vehicles,
A further object of the invention is to provide a jack which is low when collapsed and may be conveniently inserted beneath the automobile to raise the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a jack having opposed toggles which are operated by a rod having a single continuous thread, in combination with a ball-bearing to take the end thrust.
A further object of the invention is to provide a handle having a transverse pivot element, to be removably inserted within a transverse opening formed in a coupling, which is pivoted to the screw threaded rod at a right angle to the pivot element, thereby affording a, universal joint, and a detachable connection between the handle and coupling which will not readily separate in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the strain or torque of the han dle sections is transmitted directly to the coupling-sleeve, thus removing the same from the pins which connect the handle sections with the coupling-sleeve. V
A further object of the invention is to provide means for retaining the upper links of one toggle parallel with the lower links of the other toggle, while the toggles are opened and closed.
A further object of the invention is to secure the collar which is arranged behind the endthrust bearing to the screw threaded rod by means of two rivets or pins, arranged at substantially a right angle to each other, affording a stronger construction than can be obtained by using a larger single rivet or pin.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description. 1
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and which like numerals are employedto designate like parts throughout the same,
, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a jack embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same,
Figure 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section through the jack, and,
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the handle removed, parts in section,
Figure 5 is an enlarged transverse section on line 5-5 of Figure 3,
2 Claims. (01,254-126) Figure 6 is a-sirnilar View on line 6-6 of Figure 4. a i
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a base, carrying vertical sides or flanges 6, spaced as shown. Arranged above the base 5 is a header rest 1, including spaced vertical sides 8. Disposed in opposed relation are toggles 9. One toggle 9 includes a pair of upper links In and a pair of lower links H. These links H) and II are provided at their inner ends with gear teeth l2. The links In and H are duplicates and interchangeable. The other toggle 9 comprises upper and lower pairs of links, l3 and I l, having gear teeth l5.
The links [3 and M are duplicates and interchangeable, but the links of .one toggle are not duplicate and are not interchangeable with the links of the other toggle, since the gear teeth arrangement is different.
At their inner ends, the pairs'of links II and ll are pivotally mounted upon horizontal transverse pins l6, secured to the sides 6, and these pins l6 carry spacers l'i. At their inner ends, the pairs of link H! and 53 are pivotally mounted upon horizontal transverse pins 18, secured to the sides 8, and these pins carry spacers ill. The gear teeth l2 of the links !0 mesh with the gear teeth [5 of the links 13 and the gear teeth l2 of the links ll mesh with the gear teeth l5 of the links [4.
The toggles 9 are operated by a horizontal rod .20, having a single screw thread 2|. The screw threaded portion 2| of the rod operates within a screw threaded opening 22 formed in a head or block 23, provided at its opposite ends with -,pivot elements or trunnions 24, pivotally connected with the outer ends of the pairs of links H] and II, These trunnions carry washers 25 .and the ends of the trunnions are swaged or spread. The numeral 26 designates a block or head provided with a smooth opening 21, for rotatably receiving a smooth reduced portion 28 ofthe rod 20. The block or head 26 is provided at its opposite ends with pivots or trunnions 29, pivotally connected with the outer ends of the pairs of links l3 and I4, and carrying washers 3D. The pivots or trunnions have their outer ends spread, or swaged. The block or head 26 is provided with an outer flat 32. A collar 33 is formed integral with the rod 20, affordin a shoulder, and is arranged between the screw thread 2| and th block or head 26. The reduced smooth portion 28 also carries a collar 34, secured thereto by two pins
