SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,854, dated October 4, 1881.
Application filed March 1, 1880. (Model.)
Heating-Drums, as follows, my object being increased heating-surface combined with con- Veniencel in form and structure, without increasing the size.
The accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, is a vertical section, showing one-half of the drum in an upright position. I In use the drum sits upon legs close to the back of the stove, being attached to the stovepipe by means of a pipe, B B', and consists ot' two upright casings, one within the other, of of different sizes, so there may be a space of an inch or more between them all around. This space is closed at both-top and bottom; but the inside casing is left open at both top and bottom,so the air may circulate up` through freely. A partition, P P, is placed between the two easings at each end, extending from the top to within an inch or more of the bottom, this space being left open for the hot air and smoke to pass through from one side of the drum to the other when there is no direct draft or when the direct draft is closed. Now,it having been found necessary to construct the drum with a direct draft, I accomplish it in a cheap and convenient manner by making the inlet and outletpipeofone piece andextendingit through both sides of both the inner and outer casings, placing a damper within it about midway between the sides of the inner casing, and perfo l rating the pipe at c c and d d. When the` damper is open of course there is a direct draft through the pipe B B', and when closed the circulation is as before, passing into the drum 4o through the holes c c and back into the pipe again through the holes d d. The damper could be placed in the pipe B B outside the drum, in which case eXtra pipe, as indicated by the dotted lines, would `be necessary, and the pipe connecting the sides of the inner casA ing could be made separate from the inlet and .outlet pipes, it' desired.
' I claim as my invention- 1. A heating-drum composed of two up- 5o right casiugs, one within the other, the inner. one heilig open at both top and bottom,as described, together with the partitions P P,and the pipe B B passing through both sides ot' both the outer and inner casings, having the holes'c and d or their equivalent therein, and also having a damper therein between the sides of the in nercasin g, all substantially as set forth.
2. A heating-drum composed of two upright casings, one Within the other, the inner one 6o being open at both top and bottom, as described, together with'the partitions P P and a pip'e with a damper therein connecting the front and back compartments of the drum near the top, there heilig a suitable inlet and outlet on opposite sides of the drum, all substantiall y as described.
