Description

J. LOGKWOOD. noon. SEGUREB. No; 247,731. Patented Sept.'2'7, 1881..
WIT ESSES NVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH LOGKWOOD, OF SULLIVAN, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF I TO CHARLES MOINTIRE, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,731, dated. September 27, 1881.
Application filed May 19, 1881.
To an whom it may concern Be it known that I, J. LOCKWOOD, of Sullivan,in the county of Sullivan and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Door-Securers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speci- 1O fication,and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon- Figure l of the drawings is a representation of my device as applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side, with the slide moved to one side. Fig. 3 is a view showing the device folded up. Fig. 4 is a cross-section; and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views.
This invention-relates to means for securing doors; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the jointed and folding bracing-bars and sliding sleeve in connection therewithpas hereinafter more fuliy set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letters A A represent two bars of metal or other suitable material, having at their inner ends grooves a, to receive the ends of slotted strap-links 1), whereby the bars are connected. These bars may be hinged or pivoted together in other suitable ways 5 but the strap-links are pro 0 ferred, because the ends of the bars are thereby allowed to abut against each other.
' outer ends of the bars are turned downward and serrated or pronged, as indicated at I). Shoulders 0, against which the casing D abuts 3 5 when the device is closed, are formed near the outer ends of the bars. -A stop, d, for the casing is arranged about midway in the upper face of the bar A.
D is the casing or sliding sleeve, which may 40 be formed from a blank, 0, having perforations 9, and a strip h, having ears or project the joint. The pron'ged ends are then brought The (ModeL) ing pieces k. The blank 0 is bent longitudinally at right angles, so that the side walls are formed, between which the bars A A are seated, and the strip h, thus also placed be tween the sides and its ears or projections, secured in the perforations thereof. The sleeve D is intended to have a free sliding movement in the bars A A between the shoulders, near their outer or pronged ends. Its length is less than that of one of the bars, so that it can be entirely freed from engagement with the other, which is then designed to be folded between the side extensions, 2, of the sleeve. In this position it can be carried in the pocket as conveniently as a penknife. In order to use the device the bars are opened until they are-nearly in line with each other, and the sleeve D is moved down nearly over respectively against the door and the floor, and then the bars are straightened out, the sleeve being at the same time pressed down overthe joint. till it engages the stop d. In this manner the prongs are forced into the door and floor-boarding, and a secure fastening is made.
The device is readily unfastened when the sleeve is raised sufficiently to free the joint;
Having described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The door-fastener consisting of the prongbars A A, having the shoulders c and stop 0?, the strap-links b, and the sliding sleeve D,having the extensions 2, substantially as specified. 7 5
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JEREMIAH LOOKWOOD.
