ATTORN EY Patented July 26, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAT CONSTRUCTION I Irving Elishewitz, New York, N.- Y. Application August 22, 1947, Serial No. 770,139 2 .Clainis. (c1. 2-1s1) This invention relates to hats and methods of making the same. It is particularly directed to sweat bands for hats and improved methods of making the same.
An object of this invention is to provide improved sweat band construction for a hat which shall be easy to assemble and incorporate into the hat and which shall yet be comfortable to wear and inexpensive to manufacture and practical and efiicient to a high degree in use.
Another object of this invention is to provide a non-porous hat sweatband construction which shall be neat in appearance, and which shall have no stitching on its face, thereby eliminating penetration of perspiration.
A further object of this invention is to pro vide a hat sweatband of the character described, which shall comprise a strip of synthetic thermoplastic film wrapped about a reed and fused together to form a sleeve for the reed and a pair of contacting strips extending from the sleeve, one of the strips being glued to a leather sweatband strip and the other being stitched to the hat, thereby reducing the amount of stitching to a minimum.
Yetanother object of this invention is to provide a highly improved method for making the sweatband for a hat, which shall be economical and easy to carry out.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious, and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts and method steps which will be exemplified in the article and method hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a transverse cross-sectional view of a hat embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the sweatband before incorporating into the hat; and
Fig. 3 is a partial enlarged, cross-sectional view of the hat and its sweatband.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, l designates a hat embodying the invention. The hat may be made of straw, felt or any other suitable material. It comprises a brim II and a crown l2. The brim and the crown may be made of one piece or two pieces as desired. Incorporated into the crown l2 of the hat is my improved sweatband IS.
The sweatband l5 comprises a reed or Wire l6. Wrapped around the reed [6 is an elongated strip made of synthetic thermoplastic film,
such as Vinylite, Korose al, Pliofilm or;
any other suitable heat fusible material.
The strip 20 comprises a sleeve portion 2| receiving the reed l6. Extending from the sleeve 2| is an inner layer or leaf 22 and an outer layer or leaf 23. The layers 22 and 23 are attached together 'as at 24, near the sleeve 2|. Said layers 22 and 23 may be attached together by fusion, resulting from heat. Thus, heat may be applied bypassing high frequency current through the film or by heating in any other suitable manner to cause the layers 22 and 23 to fuse at their base ends to form a sleeve 2!. Glued to the outer side of the inner layer 22 is a leather sweatband or strip 25.
The band or finishing strip 25 may be attached to the layer 22 likewise adjacent the sleeve 2!, by means of glue applied as at 26. Beyond the glued portion, the layer 22 is free or separate from the band or finishing strip 25. The other layer 23 is attached to the crown l2 by means of stitching applied as at 30, all around the hat. The stitching is applied close to the junction of the crown and brim portions of the hat.
It will be noted that the strips 20 and 25 when flattened out are somewhat curved longitudinally as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The ends 32 of the leather strip 25 are stitched together resulting in a, band or finishing strip which tapers somewhat inwardly but chiefly upwardly as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
It will thus be seen that there is provided an article and method in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a hat comprising a crown, a brim and a sweat band, said crown and brim being suitably connected together, said sweat band comprising in combination a reed, a protective sheet of thermoplastic material and an internal finishing strip adapted to directly engage the head of the wearer, said sheet of thermoplastic material being folded upon itself and around said reed to form a folded sheet portion, said folded sheet portion being secured together adhesively along a narrow area in close proximity to said reed, said folded sheet constituting a housin for said reed and providing a pair of substantially concentrically superposed protective layers of thermoplastic sheet material located in the lower inside portion of the crown and secured thereto by a single lineof stitching passing through-.the-crown and the inner protective layer of said folded sheet directly engaging the crown, and the outer protective layer of said folded sheet being cemented directly to said internal finishing strip thereby eliminating the use of stitching through the internal finishing strip in securing said in: position. 7
2. A method of making and applying a sweat band to a hat havin a crown and a brim, taking an elongated strip of thermoplastic film, providing a'lengthof reed, folding said. strip longitudinally upon itself and simultaneously about said reed, fusing. the film layers together along a narrow area in close proximity to saidreed thereby forming a sleeve on and about said reed, stitching the outer layer of the film to the crown of the hat while maintaining the band in close proximity to the juncture of crown and brim, and adhesively securing an internal finishing stri to the inner layer of the film, thereby eliminating all paths for the passage of perspiration through the sweat band to the hat.
