ATTU RNEYB Patented July 19, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TWO-CYLINDER FOOT OPERATED AIR PUMP Albert Cunniff, Brookfield, Ill.
Application March 18, 1946, Serial No. 655,267
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a foot operated air pump and the primary object of the invention is to provide a pump having dual cylinders which can be operated simultaneously.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pump in which is incorporated means for assisting the user thereof in injecting air into an inner tube or similar structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pump that is simple in construction, durable in use, eflicient and reliable in operation and can be manufactured economically.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1 and Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring more in detail to the drawing the reference numeral It designates the rectangular shaped base on which is mounted the vertical parallel spaced pump cylinders I2 and I4 respectively, ports I6 communicating with the cylinders l2 and I4 also communicate with the passageway [8 having a communicating port 20 extending through the upper face of the base and is provided at its outlet end with the rubber hose coupling 22. The base at the end opposite to the port 20 is provided with a communicating port 2| which provides an air intake port for the cylinders, and a, conventional check valve 23 for control of the port 2| is provided at the outer end of the port 2|. Piston rods 24 having leather cup pistons 26 are mounted in the cylinders l2 and M by means of the caps 28.
The piston rods 24 are bridged at their upper ends by the crossbar an, and rods 32 connected at their upper ends to the cross bar 30 and bridged at their lower ends by the cross bar 34 and secured to the rods 32 intermediately of the crossbars 3D and 34 by fasteners 36 is the armate shaped stirrup 38 upon which the foot of the user is to be pressed to operate the piston rods 24.
Guides 40 positioned on opposite sides at the 2 ends of the crossbar 34 and formed on the surface of the cylinders l2 and I4 control the reciprocation of the crossbar 34.
A tubular stanchion 42 supports a handle 44 on the upper end thereof in the semicircular seat 46 and the handle is retained in the seat 46 by the fastener 48.
The stanchion 42 is provided with inclined diverging legs 50 having flanged ends 52 which are secured to the caps 28 by fasteners 54- and the legs 50 straddle the cross bar 30 to permit the reciprocation or thrust of the cross bar.
The cross bar 30 is provided at the center thereof with the coupling 56 to which one end of the coil spring 58 is secured and extending upwardly through the stanchion 42 the other end of the spring is connected to the handle 44. The spring will return the pistons to the top of the cylinder after they have been depressed by the foot of the operator.
In operation of the pump the handle is firmly grasped by the hands of the user, his foot is placed on the stirrup 38 and upon depressing the stirrup air will be forced through the coupling 22. Upon release of foot pressure the spring 58 will return the pistons to the upper end of the cylinders and the above procedure repeated until the proper air pressure has been obtained.
It is believed that the operation and construction of the pump will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A pump comprising two cylinders, having valved controlled intake and discharge ports, pistons reciprocally mounted in the cylinders, footactuated means for imparting air-discharge strokes to the pistons, means for imparting airintake strokes to the pistons, said second means comprising an upright tubular stanchion, legs supporting the stanchion from the upper ends of the cylinders in an elevated position with respect to the cylinders, a coil spring within the stanchion having its upper end fixed to the stanchion and its lower end fixed to said foot- 3 '4 actuated means the opening being tensioned 'on V UNITED STATES PATENTS the actuation of the pistons by the foot-means N Date to adapt it to impart intake strokes to the piston ggg gg Feb. 19 1884 when said foot means is released, and a handle 6343961 smith Oct 1899 fixed to the upper end of the extension. 5 636:522 1899 904,940 Dahlberg Nov. 24, 1908 ALBERT CUNNIFF- 929,401 Dahlberg July 27, 1909 REFERENCES CITED FOREIGN PATENTS The following references are of record in the 10 Number Country Date file of this patent: 2,653 Great Britain 1915
