Abstract

2653. Miller, W. E., and Roberts, T. H. Feb. 19. Actuating pumps by hand and foot power.- A portable foot pump for inflating tyres &c. comprises a vertical cylinder, a cross-head or pedal plate on the piston-rod, lateral guide-rods attached to the cross-head and either passing through guide-lugs on the cylinder or its cover, or connected to a ring embracing the outside of the cylinder, and a spring returning the piston to its upper position; a lever may be used for operating large pumps. Fig. 1 shows a form of apparatus wherein the spring H extends between the cover D and the foot-plate E, the guide-rods F passing through slots in the cover'. The cup-shaped base C has an extension c, which is hinged and slotted to engage a projection e on the cross-head E. Where a ring is provided on the lower ends of the guiderods F, embracing the cylinder, the spring may extend between this ring and the cover. The lever, when one is used, may be operated by foot or hand; it is pivoted on the base or other fixed part, and engages or is linked to the cross-head. A tube L conveys the air to the tyre.
