FIG. 5

SAM U EL HERSCHKOWITZ INVENTOR.
Patented July 12, 1949 UNITED STATES l AT EN'T OFFICE NECKTIE HOLDER QR RACK Samuel Herschkowitz, Bowie, Md.
Application February 25, 194'Z, Serial No., 7,311,124
4 Claims.
This invention relates to holders or racks for supporting neckties or like articles, and an object of the invention is to provide a holder or rack which will support a number of neckties, indiv-idually, in such manner that anychosen tie may be removed from the holder or rack without disturbing any of the other ties held thereby.
An object of the present invention is to provide a holder or rack for supporting a relatively large number of neckties or the like in such mannor that the ties will be prevented from becoming accidentally dislodged on or from the holder or rack, as well as providing a holder which will support the neckties or the like in such manneras to prevent wrinkling or creasing of the neckties and which holder will further permit ready selection of any of the neckties supported thereon.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a holder or rack for neckties or like articles which may be supported in extended position to permit selection of a tie thereon, removal of ties from the holder and easy placement of ties on the holder, and which holder may be swung into a collapsed, non-protruding position at other times.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a holder or rack for neckties or the like embodying the advantages above set out which is comparatively-simple in construction and may be manufactured at an economical cost.
With these and other objects in view, as may appear from the accompanying specification, the invention consists of various features of-construction and combination of parts, which will be first described iii-connection with the accompanying drawings, showing a necktie holder or rack of a preferred form embodying the invention, and the features forming the invention will be specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved necktie holder showing it in extended position.
Figure 2 is a side. elevation of the improved necktie holder showin it in folded or non-protruding position,
Figure 8 is a plan View of the improved necktie holder or rack.
Figure 4 is an end View of the necktie holder.
Figure 5 is a detailed section taken on the line of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a modified form of a necktie holder.
Figure '7 is a side elevation of a further modified form of the necktie holder.
Referring more particularly to the drawings,
the improved necktie holder comprises a support I which ispreferably formed of sheet material bent to form an attaching plate 2, and right angularly extendingwings or side plates 3. The side plates 3 have horizontally extending slots 4 cut therein which receives the pivotpin 5. The pivot pin 5 is attached to the rack structure 6 and projects from each side thereof as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
The rack structure 6 includes the arm I which, in the preferred form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive of the drawings, comprises a flat elongated bar having a plurality of flat parallel portions 8 arranged in stepped relation to each other, that is, each of the fiat portions 8 is offset laterally with respect to the adjacent ofiset portion.
Tie or article gripping clips-9 are carried one on each of the'fiat ofi'set portions 8 and extending equidistant upon each side of the arm I. The necktie or article holding clips 9 are preferably formed of spring material and their outer ends are folded inwardly and outwardly over each other as clearly shown at ID in Figure 4 of the drawings to provide resilient gripping action upon neckties or other articles so as to hold the ties or articles against slipping or accidental dislodgement on the holder. If it is so desired, the outer free ends of the upper sections H of the clip structures l0 may be flared outwardly as shown at l2 to facilitate the insertion of a necktie or other article into the clip structure, as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. The outer edges [3 of the folded over portions of the resilient strips are slightly rounded so as to prevent sharp edges which might catch threads or otherwise mutilate the ties or other articles supported by the holders. By the provision of the stepped or offset relation of the plate portions 8 it will be seen that the ties or other articles supported by the supporting clips will hang individually and in such manner as to prevent creasing or wrinkling of the ties.
The pivot pin 5 riding in the slots 4 will permit the rack structure 5 to be swung into a horizontal position as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings for the removal of ties from or the placing of ties upon the clip structures and will permit ready selection of any tie or other article or, when not in use as above specified, may be swung into a vertical non protruding position as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. For holding the rack structure 6 in a horizontal position a tongue I4 is struck from or formed upon the attaching portion 2 of the support l and this tongue engages the upper surface of the end of the arm I which extends beyond the pivot pin for preventing pivotal movement of the rack structure 6. This supporting movement is provided simply by moving the rack structure 6 to slide the pivot pin 5 in the slots ll until the end of the arm I is engaged beneath the tongue I4. If it is so desired, a stop pin l5 may be carried by the wings or sides 3 for engagement with the protruding end of the arm '1' to limit the outward movement of the pivot pin 5 in the slots 4 and will hold the rack structure 5 relatively firm in its substantially vertical or nonprotruding position.
In Figure 6 of the drawings the arm of the rack structure 2|, instead of being stepped or having laterally offset portions has its major length disposed at an incline or acute angle with respect to the pivot pin carrying end 22 of the arm so that none of the article holding clips 23 which are carried thereby will be in the same plane, thereby providing in efieot the same spacing of the articles held by the clip as are provided by the stepped arm shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive of the drawings. In all other respects the structure shown in Figure 6 is the same as the structure shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive.
In the modified .iorm shown in Figure 7 of the drawings, the arm of the holding rack structure 3! is curved so that none of the clips 32 carried thereby will be in the same plane. In this modified form of the invention the end 33 of the arm 31, which carries the holding clips 32 is .curved and has a laterally extending stop pin 34 carried rthereby which engages beneath the tongue 35. The tongue 35 is formed upon or struck from the attaching back 36 of the support structure 31. When the rack structure 3| is swung into a substantially vertical or nonprotruding position, the stop pin 34 will contact a stop pin 38 which is carried by the sides of the support 31.
It will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific construction or arrangemenlt of parts shown, but that they may be widely modified within the invention defined by the claims.
