[III/A Patented July 12, 1949 UNITED STATES er N'l orrice 3 Claims.
This invention relates to gate valves, and more particularly to gate valves of the rotary gate type.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved gate valve structure having locking means for positively maintaining the Valve either in its fully opened or fully closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved gate valve of simple construction which is adapted to be easily and effectively controlled and which is provided with automatic locking means for maintaining the valve elements either in fully opened or fully closed positions.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of a valve constructed in accordance with this invention, the valve being shown in fully opened position.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional View taken on line il-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 but with the valve shown in fully closed position.
Figure 4-. is a detail cross-sectional View taken on line 44 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, H designates the main body portion of the valve, said body portion l I being formed with hollow flanged arms l2 and I3 for connection to the respective pipe sections between which the valve is interposed, and a central cavity I l. The upper end of body portion H is flanged, as shown at l5, and to the top flange I5 is secured a cover member it having formed thereon a top yoke element l1. Rotatably supported in top yoke element I1 is a vertical shaft E8, the top of shaft [8 carrying a hand wheel I9 rigidly secured thereto. Shaft I8 is provided with a collar member 20 rigidly pinned thereto which cooperates with hand wheel I9 to maintain shaft it in secured relation with respect to yoke element i'l, preventing endwise movement of the shaft with respect to the yoke element. Shaft l8 extends downwardly into the valve cavity through a sealing gland member 2| for providing a fluidtight connection between shaft I8 and cover member H5. The lower end of shaft I8 threadedly engages a vertically movable top abutment member 22 which is formed with a downwardly tapered lower portion 23. Abutment member 22 is generally rectangular in plan.
Secured to abutment member 22 adjacent one end thereof are a pair of depending legs 24, 24', each of said legs being formed with an inwardly projecting cam element 25, said cam element havin a top inclined cam surface 2% and a bottom inclined cam surface 21. Secured to abutment member 22 adjacent the other end thereof are a second pair of depending legs 28, 28 each formed with an inwardly projecting cam element 29 having a top inclined cam surface 353 and a bottom inclined cam surface 3!. Secured to the lower ends of legs 2:3, and 2B, 28 is a bottom abutment member 32 formed with an upwardly tapered top portion 33.
Arm i2 is formed with a boss 3 t projecting into cavity i l and formed with straight vertical sides slidably fitting between legs 2 2d. Arm i3 is formed with a similar inwardly projecting boss 35 slidably fitting between legs 23, 28. Boss 34 is formed with a cylindrical seat portion 36 and boss 35 is formed with a similar cylindrical seat portion 3? having the same central axis and ourvature as seat portion 36. Rotatively supported on seat portion 3% is a first valve segment 38 and rotatively supported on seat portion 37 is a second valve segment 39, valve segment 39 being formed with a cylindrical center lug Ml which rotatively interfits with a cylindrical center recess it formed in valve segment 38. The end surfaces of valve segments 38 and 39 respectively, slidably abut depending legs 2 3, 24 and 28, 28 whereby said segments are maintained in correct axial positions with respect to seat portions 36 and 31. Each segment is formed with a bore adapted to be aligned in registry with each other and with the seat bores when the segments are in the fully opened position of the valve, as shown in Figure 1.
Valve segment 38 is formed with a pair of upper projections t2 adapted to be abutted by upper cam surfaces 26 of legs 24, 24 to move the segment to its valve opening position responsive to upward movement of legs 2%, 24. A pair of lower projections 33 are provided on said segment 38 adapted to be abutted by lower cam surfaces 21 of legs 2 it to move the segment to valve closing position responsive to downward movement of legs 24, 24. Valve segment 39 is similarly provided with upper projections it adapted to be abutted by cam surfaces 39 to open segment 39 responsive to upward movement of legs 28, 28, and with lower projections 15 adapted to be abutted by cam surfaces 3! to close segment 39 responsive to downward movement of legs 28, 28.
In the open position of the valve segments, top portion 33 of bottom abutment member 32 is adapted to interlock with the bottom radial surfaces of the valve segments to positively maintain the valve open, as shown in Figure 1. In the closed. position of the valve, lower portion While a specific embodiment of a gate valve.
structure has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art" Therefore it is intended that no limitationsbe.;placed;-.orr the invention other than as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
