UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD P. HAFF, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BRAlD-CLASP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 247,559, dated September 27, 1881,
Application filed August 6,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. HAFF, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Braidlllasp, of which the followingis a specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of a roll of braid provided with myimproved clasp. Fig. 2 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of the detached clasp.
This invention relates to a new clasp for holding down the outer end of a roll of braiding, tape, binding, or the like.
Heretofore the ends of rolls of braidor the [5 like were held down by straps fastened to the center of the rolls. Such straps could not be conveniently handled to wind up the rollor to lay back a loose end. Complex clamping devices using pivoted lever-handles have also been proposed. I
My invention consists in the production of a sliding clasp embracing two or three folds of the wound braid, tape, or the like, and provided with a projecting handle rigidly secured thereto, so that it can be conveniently moved and will always be in position to be taken hold of.
In the drawings, A represents a roll of braid, tape, binding, or the like. This roll is either 0 circular or elongated, as in Fig. '1, or of other convenient form, and is, by preference, wound around a central stick, B, having forked ends a a. The braid lies in the embrace of the fork at each end of the stick, as shown.
0 is the clasp. It is preferably made of 5 wire, but may, if desired, be made of sheet metal or other material. It is constructed to form two eyes or loops, 1), through which the braid passes, and a projecting handle, d, rigidly secured in place. It is most desirableto 40 have the handle at project from thecross-bar e, that connects the loops 1).
It the device is made of sheet metal one long loop, b, in lieu of the two shortloops may be used.
The braid A is drawn through the loop or loops 1), so that two or more strands pass through it, as shown. This will permit the roll to be readily unwound, theclasp traveling along the outer layer during the act of unwinding. After the roll has been more orless unwound it can be readily wound up by taking hold of the handle d and moving the clasp 0 toward the free endfof the braid until the roll has been restored to its proper condition.
I olain1- l. The sliding clasp O, constructed of the loop or loops b, and projecting handled, rigid on said loop or loops, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The clasp O, constructed of two loops, 1) b, cross-bar c, and projecting handled, substantially as herein shown and described.
EDWARD P. HAFF.
