STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,551, dated September 27, 1881.

To all whom feit may concern Beit known that I, PATRICK FrrzeInBoNs, ofOswego, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the followlng, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a novel construction of a return-flue boiler and the connection of same with the furnace thereof, designed more particularly for the use of straw and other light combustibles as fuelfor generating steam, and in which are combined structural stability with superior facility for regulating the heat of the furnace and the application of said heat to the boiler, and also with greater safety against communicating lire to surrounding objects.
The invention is fully illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein Figure l is a'longitudinal section of my improved steam-boiler 5 and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are transverse sections on lines w y y, and z z, respectively.

' B denotes the boiler proper, made cylindrical throughout its length, and having under its front end the furnace or lire-box F, which is surrounded by a water-jacket, e, connected with the boiler, and communicating with the water-space thereof.
The furnace is made in one complete shell, having its upper corners curved, as shown at a, and its croWn-sheetbmade with a segmental downward deflection in the form of an arc described from the axial center of the boiler, and with the same radius as that of the boiler-shell. Said crown-.sheet is made to serve as the bottom of the boiler, the main portion of the boiler-shell over the furnace being segmental in form and riveted at its longitudinal edges to the top of the croWn-sheet,thus maintaining the cylindrical form of the boiler throughout its length. The furnace extends part way the length of the boiler, and its rear end communicates'with large ues A, which are extended through the `rear portion of the boiler to the usual combustion-chalnber, G, on the rear end,
from whence the products of combustion return to the smoke-box D and stack S, at the front end of the boiler, by iiues f, extended through the boiler. The furnaceis also made to communicate direct with the smokebox D by large iiues A', which are extendedfrom the rear end of the furnace through the forward portion of the boiler, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
In order to obtain the requisite access to the inner ends of the lilies A A for properly tting, upsetting, and repairing the same, when necessary, I connect said ends with a vertical extension ot' the rear end of the furnace, projecting part way into the boiler, said extension being made by an opening, E, of the requisite size, in the bottom of the boiler-shell, through which opening the upper portion of the inner back sheet of the furnace is extended, the protruding portion of said sheet forming a segmental flue-sheet, c, which extends across the bottom of thev boiler and has connected thereto the forward end of the fines A. A similar segmental Hue-sheet, c, is secured to the interior bottom of the boiler, at the opposite side of the aforesaid opening, and has secured to it the rear end ot' the flues A. A crown-sheet, d, extended across the opening and secured to the free edges of the two fluesheets c c and to the side plate of the furnace, completes the vertical extension of the rear endof the furnace. The ends of the lines A are provided with a suitable valve or damper, lv, by which the direct draft through said ues call be regulated.
The described arrangement of the short and direct return-fines A', with their dampers o, is deemed an essential improvement in strawburning return-flue boilers, in that they afford a convenient and effective means of quickly increasingthe draft, when desired, and as quickly checking the draft in case the stack throws sparks, endangering surrounding objects.
Having described my invention, whatl claim as new isl. A return-fiile boiler having at the front end a subjacent fire-box colnmunicating with a combustion-chamber on the rear end of the boiler by flucs extended through the rear portion of the boiler, a smoke-box and stack on the front end of the boiler, communieatin g with the rear combustion-chain ber by ues extended through the length of' the boiler, and commu- 5 nieating, also,with the lire-boxbyliuesextended through the forward portion of the boiler directly to the ire-box, substantially as shown and set forth.
