This invention relates to improvements in cushion or mattress units, and more particularly to the method of forming said units and securing the same together.

An object of the invention is to provide an improved cushion or mattress unit including a cloth bag having an opening on one side and provided with means for closing and securing the opposite ends thereof, said bag or container being adapted to receive a coil spring.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved unit for a cushion or mattress which will include a reversable bag or container in which a coil spring will be received and supported.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved cushion or mattress unit which will be highly efiicient in operation and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.

Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.

In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application,

Figure 1 is a top plan view of four of the improved cushions or mattress units secured together in assembled position;

Figure 2 is a bottom view of several of the improved cushion or mattress units secured together;

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View taken through the four units shown in Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a vertical View of a portion of unit showing the coil spring therein;

Figure 5 is a side elevation of the empty bag or container for the unit before being turned inside out, and

Figure 6 isa detailed sectional View of a portion of two units showing a clip for securing them together.

Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a cloth or fabric bag or container I, which is held closed at its opposite ends by wire clips or rings 2, and is provided with an opening 3 extending from end to end, as best illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings.

The bag or container l is made up with the clips or rings 2 on the outside thereof adjacent 5 :Claims. (01. 5-353} 2 its opposite ends. Any other-suitable and desirable form of fastening elements may be substituted for the disclosed rings or clips.

In use, the ba i will be turned inside out, and the coil springs 4 will be inserted through the *side openings 3, whereupon the bag or unit will become tubular in shape and have a flat top 5 and a bottom 6. When the springs 4 are in position within the bags or units I, the clips or rings 2 will be located on the inside surfaces of the said top 5 and bottom 6, and there is sulficient material in the bags or units to permit an overlap of an inch or slightly more along the lines of the side openings 3, which will be suflicient to positively secure the springs within said bags or units.

A plurality of these spring units will be secured together at their tops and bottoms to adjacent units by means of the clips or rings 1, which will extend through the material of the bag and be clamped or looked over the adjacent coils 8 of the coil springs 4, thereby formin a complete cushion or mattress unit, which may then be covered by a suitable ticking or cover (not shown).

It will be understood that any desired fastening element may be used in connection with the bags for holding their opposite ends closed, and for securing adjacent elements or units in assembled or connected relation.

While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. A method of constructing a cushion or mattress unit having a coiled spring enclosed by a bag, comprising the following consecutive steps of rolling an elongated sheet of flexible material into hollow elongated cylindrical form, gathering the material at each end and encircling the gathered material by a filamentary element, turning the unit so formed inside out, and inserting a suitable spring coil coaxially into the unit.

2. A method of constructing a bag for individual coil springs of a cushion or mattress, comprising rolling an elongated sheet of flexible material into hollow elongated cylindrical form with the longitudinal edges overlapping, gathering each of the ends together, encircling the gathered ends by a relatively inflexible filamentary element, and turning the unit so formed inside out.

3. A method of constructing a. bag for individual coil springs of a cushion or mattress, comprising rolling an elongated sheet of flexible material into hollow elongated cylindrical form, gathering each of the ends together, fastening the gathered ends with wire clips, and turning the unit so formed inside out.

4. Means to contain a coil spring for use in a cushion or mattress, comprising an elongated bag constructed of sheet material, each end portion of the bag being gathered and disposed inwardly of the bag, a filamentary element encircling each' .of said gathered end portions at points spaced slightly from the extremities of said end portions, the sheet material having overlapping edge portions extending longitudinally of the bag and defining a slit to allow insertion of a spring into the bag, the material of the bag adjacent said ends being stretched flat to close the ends of the spring inserted in the bag.

5. Means to contain a coil spring for use in a cushion or mattress, comprising an elongated bag constructed of sheet material, each end portion of the bag being gathered and disposed inwardly of the bag, a filamentary element encircling each of said gathered end portions at points spaced 4 slightly from the extremities of said end portions, the sheet material having overlapping edge portions extending longitudinally of the bag and defining a slit to allow insertion of a spring into the bag, said filamentary elements comprising sections of relatively inflexible wire clipped onto said end portions, each section having a length slightly exceeding the circumference of the end portions.
