JAMES WARD AND EUEUs wAsHBURN, 0E HANDLEY, TEXAS.
SULKY-CARRIAGE FOR PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 247,446, dated September 20, 1881.
Application led January 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, JAMES WARD an( RUFUS WASHBURN, of Handley, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sulky- Carriages for Plows; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part. of this speciflcation, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
The present invention relates to that class of sulky or wheel plows in which provision is made forraising and lowering the plow and ground or transporting wheels.
The object of the invention is to furnish a sulky-frame and plow supporting and adjusting devices of a simplified construction, andv to provide more effective means for gagin g the depth of the penetration of the plow into the ground, and guiding or steadying the movement thereof. These objects we attain by the construction and combination of devices, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and then set forth in the claim. g
Figure lis a perspective view of a sulkyplowv constructed according to our invention, the view being taken from the wheel side of the frame. Fig. 2 is a perspective viewtaken from the plow side of the frame.
The frame-work of the plow-sulky consists of the parallel longitudinal bars A B and the front connecting-bars, G, forming a part of or made in one piece with said parallel bars A B. A thirdbar, D, also extending in alengthwise direction on the outside of the bar B, has
a front top plate, E, which serves to support the draft-tongue F. The plate E has adownwardly-projecting portion or plate, G, which ts against the inner side of the bar B, and is riveted or bolted to the same. The drafttongue is pivoted to the under side of the plate E by means of a bolt, a, and is extended in rear of the pivot and provided with a clamping bolt or other device, d, which extends through a curved slot, e, made in the plate E. The object of this construction is to permit the draft-tongue to be shifted to the right or left to take more or less land.
The plow-supporting yoke or hanger H is tted between the two bars B D of the sulkyframe, and turns at its front end upon a transverse bolt, I, passed through said bars, or else saidtbolt may turn with the hanger and move in bearings in the bars B D. The beam J ot any ordinary plow is connected with the hanger or yoke H by a transverse bolt or pin passing through said beam ;Y or said beam can be connected with the hanger by means of a clip or clamp device of any preferred construction. The plow-beamis free to turn in its supporting yoke 'or hanger, and has the customary clevis at its front end for the attachment of the draft.
The means for varying the depth of penetration ofthe plow into the ground or raising it above the same comprise the pivoted lever K, which is pivoted to the bar B of the sulkyframe, and provided with a rearwardly-extending arm, lo, connected by means of alink, h, with the free or rear end of the plow-hanger or supporting yoke. The lever K is slotted for the passage of a curved retaining-plate, L, the upper edge of which is notched. Alocking pawl or dog, M, pivoted in the slotted portion of thelever K, engages with said notched plate L, and has an oblique slot, m, through which passes a pin on the lower end of a lever,'N, that is connected with the main lever K by a suitable fulcrum pin or connection. A spring, O, arranged between the two levers K N will serve to press the pawl or dog M into the notches of the plate L, so as to retain the plow-hau ger in any position in which it may be placed. By pressing upon the lever N the pin carried by the same will move in the oblique slot of the dog, so as to disengage the latter from the retaining-plate and permit the plow-beamte be raised or lowered to suit the requirements of the case.
It will readily be observed that the arrangement of the plow-hanger between the two beams B D will serve to support and brace the same on both sides, so as to prevent any lateral displacement thereof. The beam B eX- tends beyond the landside of the plow, and has an outwardly-bent rear arm, B', in which is swiveled the arm or hanger P of a casterwheel, Q. This wheel travels on the ground directly in rear of the landside portion of the plow, and serves to take the weight thereof,
so as to make the draft lighter than if said wheel were not present.
It represents a ground or bearing wheel, which travels on the unplowed or unbroken ground, and its spindle or axle -arm is attached to the lower end of a lever, S, which is pivoted to the beam A of the sulky-frame. The lever S is slotted in the same manner as the lever K, and like the latter is provided with a locking-dog, T, which engages with the notched or rael; plate U, and is connected with the spring-pressed disengaging-lever V. By shifting the position ot' the lever S the wheel Ris raised or lowered, so as to adaptit to the varying positions ot' the plow. When the plow is raised above ground and the wheel R lowered to its full extent, it and the easterwheel will enable it to be drawn from place to place.
The drivers seat V is located in proper relation to the levers K S, so as to enableI the Same to be conveniently manipulated, and the arched supporting-har W ot' said seat is seeured to the bars A B ot' the sulky-frame. A foot board or support, X, is arranged between said bars and is secured to the same.
A frame constructed according to our invention is much lighter and stronger than others heretofore known, and our means used in connection therewith for supporting the plow will tend to makeup a sulky-plow which possesses many advantages over existingplows of an analogous description.
W e make no elaim to broadness of invention, as we are well aware that many plows are provided with plow-hangers and ground- Wheels, the positions of which are controlled by levers and retaining devices for thelatter; but
What we do elaim as ourinvention, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sulky-plow,the combination of thelongitudinal bar A, the transverse front har, C, the longitudinal bar B, having rear outwardly projecting arm, B', and easter wheel Q, mounted therein, the short longitudinal bar D, having afront plate, E, eonneeted with the bar B, and the pivoted plow hanger oryoke H, arranged between the bars B D, with the ground or bearing wheel, draft-tongue, and deviees for raising and lowering the plowhanger and bearing-wheel,as and for thepnrpose set forth.
In testimon;Y that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our naines in thepresenee of two witnesses.
JAMES VARD.
{UFUS VASHBURN.
