Description

(Model.)
0. B. POST.
THILL COUPLING.
No. 247,405. Patented Sept. 20,1881.
I. I I
WITNESSES u i I I Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES B. POST, OF NEW LONDON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS D. MILLER, OF FREMONT, OHIO.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,405, dated September 20, 1881. Application filed June 24, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES B. PosT, of New London, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved thill-coupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a front View.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to thill-conplings; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, by which rattling is absolutely prevented, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the axle and B the chill-clip, which is provided in the usual manner with forwardprojecting arms 0, having bearings for the bolt I), upon which the thilliron E is pivoted. Said bolt is provided with a hooked head, F, extending, as shown, under the head of the thill-iron, and with a seat for a key, G, by which it is secured in position, in lieu of the nut usually employed.
H is a curved spring, which rests upon the apex of the clip, its front lower end bearing against the head of the thill-iron, and its upper rear end being provided with a perforation, I, to receive a bolt, J, provided at its lower end with a forwardly-bent loop, K, which is adjusted, as shown, over the rear nut, L, by means of which the thill-clip is secured upon the axle.
It will be seen that by tightening the thumbnut M at the upper end of bolt J the spring H may be tightened, so as to increase its press ure upon the thill-head, and thus prevent rattling. By loosening the thumb-nut M, so as to remove the pressure upon the head of the thill-iron, the boltD may be removed and the thill easily detached. The hooked head of bolt D prevents the said bolt from turning, except the short distance between the front end of spring H and the shank of the thill-iron, thus retaining the key G always in a vertical, or nearly vertical, position, which prevents it from being displaced or lost.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, inexpensive, easily applied, and thoroughly efl'ective.
Having thus'describedmy invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a thill-coupling, the combination of the clip, the'pivoted thill-iron, the spring H, and the bolt J, having forwardly-bent loop K and thumb-nut L, as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a thill-coupling, the combination, with an anti-rattling spring, of an adjusting-bolt having a forwardly-bent loop by which it may be hooked or adjusted upon the rear bolt ot' the thill-clip, as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
3. As an improvementiu thill-couplings, the combination of the clip B, having arms 0, bolt D, having hooked head 1, thill-iron E, curved spring H, bolt J, having forwardly-bent loop K, and the thumb-nut M, all arranged and operating as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES B. POST. Witnesses:
