T. G. HALL. APPARATUS FOR SMELTING ORES. No. 247,342. Patented Sept. 20,1881.
\ UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
THURSTON Gr. HALL, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE H. VAN VLEOK, OF SAME PLACE.
APPARATUS FOR SMELTING ORES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 247,342, dated September 20, 1881.
Application filed August 11, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THURSTON G. HALL, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Smelting Ore, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates more especially to that class of blast-furnaces in which a gas-blast is employed in connection with an air-blast, and in which the gas is derived in a hot state from 'a furnace of some kind.
The object of this invention is to prevent the injurious etl'ect of the hot gas upon the blowing apparatus.
My invention consists in providing the gasconduit with a cooler ot' the construction hereinafter described, whereby the gas is cooled before it is admitted to the blowing apparatus, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The accompanyingdrawing represents a sectional elevation of my improved apparatus.
A represents a blast-turn ace of any ordinary and well-known construction.
B represents the chimney or other gas'exit passage of a boiler or other ordinary furnace, G, in which coal or other suitable fuel is burned.
D represents the gas conduit or pipe which leads from the gas-exit passage 13 to the gastuyeres e of the furnace A.
F represents a surface-cooler, arranged in the gas-conduit D, between the gas-supply passage B and the blowing apparatus Gr, which may be of any suitable and well-known construction. As shown in the drawing,-the cooler l is composed of a closed vertical tank provided with vertical pipes f, which are fitted in two horizontal plates, 9, forming an upper and lower chamber, H I, in the tank F. The
gas enters the upper chamber, H, passes thence through the pipes f, and escapes into the lower chamber, I, whence it passes to the blowing apparatus G.
k is a water-supply-pipe, through which cold the water which has become heated by contact I with the hot pipes f is permitted to escape from the top of the water-space. The water which has become heated in its passage through the cooler may be used for feeding the boiler or for any other purpose.
M represents an equalizin gvessel, which may be arranged in the gas-conduitD,between the blowing apparatus Gr and the tuyeres e. The vessel M is made of sufficient size to receive and retain a large volume of gas, and it is preferably provided with a regulating-valve, n, which is adjusted to blow ofi when the gaspressure within the equalizer exceeds a certain desired limit. In this manner a steady supply of gas is furnished to the tuyeres at all times,
and the heat of the gas is abstracted before it whereby the gas is conducted fronrt-he'geper/ ating-furnace to the blast-furnace, and a sur-' face-cooler, Gr, provided with water supply and escape pipes l, and arranged in the gas-conduit D, between the generating-furnace and the blowing apparatus, whereby the gas is deprived of its heat before it enters the blowing apparatus, substantially as set forth.
