R. D. GALLAGHER.
SKETGHING APPARATUS.
Patented Sept. 20,1881.
WITNESSES WWW UNITED STATES v PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD D. GALLAGHER, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
SKETCHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,331, dated September 20, 1881. Application filed July 23, 1881. Nb model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD D. GALLA- GHER, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Sketching Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved apparatus for facilitating sketching from nature.
The invention consists in aframe supported by folding legs and carrying a folding canopy provided with a curtain, and in its top with a convex lens, into which the light-rays are deflected by a hinged mirror above it, the rays being thrown from the lens upon a sheet on a vertically-adj ustable board in the frame, which frame is provided on its under side with a drawer for pencils, 850., and with a portfolio for drawings and paper, and the folding legs are provided with a folding seat, so that the whole apparatus can be folded very compactly and carried very conveniently.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front-end elevation of my improved sketching apparatus. Fig. 2- is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line 00 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A circular drawing-board, A, is provided with diagonal grooves B, resembling screwthreads in its edge, and fits in aframe, 0, provided with a series of projecting strips or lugs, D, fitting in the grooves B, so that when the board A is turned by means of the knob E it will be raised or lowered slightly.
The frame 0 is provided with the pivoted or folding legs 1* and G, the latter being united by cross-pieces H and H, from which crosspiece H a cord, J, passes to the bottom transverse rod, K, connecting the legs F, which are provided near their upper ends with a series of apertures, L, into which the bent lower end of brace-rods M fit, pivoted to the outer edges of the frame 0.
A seat, N, is provided with pivoted legs 0, the lower ends of which are pivoted to the rod K, and with a pivoted leg, P, having a series of notches, Q, into which a ring or loop, Q, fits, attached to the lower end of a brace, R, pivoted to the seat N.
A canopy-frame, S, is supported by barsT, pivoted to the frameG, and held in position by braces T, and is surrounded by a curtain, U, the front part, U, of which is loose. A lens, V, is fastened in the canopy-frame S below an aperture, V. on the top of the canopy-frame S, above the opening V, and is provided with side curtains, W. A portfolio, X, for drawings and paper, is held to the upper parts of the legs F and G.
The frame 0 is provided on the under side with a drawer, Y, for pencils, crayons, 850.
The sketching apparatus is used in the following manner: Foruseit is erected as shown in Fig. 1, the artist placing the head and upper part of the body under the curtain U, which falls over the back and excludes all the light, (which is necessary,) so that the picture of the country back of the artist can be seen on the sheet on the board A. The rays of light are deflected by the mirror W, which defleets them on the lens V, which collects them and throws them on the sheet on the board A. The artist can then follow the outlines, produce the desired shading, &c., with the pencil. The board A can be adjusted higher or lower, so as to be in the proper focus, by turning it by means of the button E.
For transportation, the apparatus can be folded very compactly, and can then be carried very conveniently.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sketching apparatus constructed, substantially as herein shown and described, with a folding canopy having a mirror and lens in its top and a vertically-adjustable drawingboard in its bottom, as set forth.
2. In a sketching apparatus, the combination, with the frame O of a folding canopy provided with an adjustable mirror, W, and a lens, V, of the bars T, the braces T, and the vertically-adjustable drawing-board A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
A mirror, W, is pivoted 8. In a sketching apparatus, the combination, with the frame 0 of a folding canopy provided with a lens, V, and a mirror, W, of the drawing-board A, provided with diagonal grooves Bin the edge, the knob E, and the clips or lugs D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a sketching apparatus, the combination, with the frame 0 of a folding canopy provided with a lens, V, and mirror W, of the drawing-board A, and of folding legs F G and the folding seat N, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
5; In a sketching apparatus, the combination, with the frame 0 of a folding canopy provided with a lens, V, and mirror W, of the drawing-board A, the pivoted legs F and G, the transverse bar H, the transverse rod K, and the cord J, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a sketching apparatus, the combination, with the frame 0 of a folding canopy provided with a lens, V, and mirror W, of the drawing-board A, the pivoted legs F and G, 25 the transverse bar H, the transverse rod K, the cord J, the legs 0 and Q, the pivoted brace R, and the loop or ring Q, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. 3o
7. In a sketching apparatus, the combination, with the frame 0 of a folding canopy provided with a lens, V, and mirror W', of folding legs F and G, afolding seat, N, and a portfolio, X, substantially as herein shown and de- 3 5 scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
8. In a sketching apparatus, the combination, with the frame 0 of a folding canopy provided with a lens, V, and a mirror, W, of folding legs F and G, a folding seat, N, a port- 0 folio, X, and a drawer, Y, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
