METHOD OF HANGING PICTURES, LOOKING-GLASSES. &C.

Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 24,729, dated `July 12, 18259.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lV. A. FOSTER, of Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picture-Frame and Mirror Adjusters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention consists in an improved mode of hanging picture frames and wall mirrors so that they can be adjusted directly forward or backward or turned to the right or left and also upward or downward at pleasure in order to bring them into any desired position in regard to light or other circumstances.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of a mirror or picture frame suspended fronra wall. by means of my invention. Figs. Q and 3 are top views of the saine, showing the mirror in different positions.

A portion of the wall of a room is shown at IV. to which is attached a circular plate I). Projecting from the center of this plate is a small stud, to which two flat bars or levers A. A, are attached by pivots, as seen in Fig. 2 at S. These levers carry two other levers A A which are pivoted to the bar B, and this latter is fastened to the frame of the glass, F, by means of two small pivots c. U pon the bar B and pivots c, the frame has an adjustahility, as shown in F ig. 1, so as to turn the face of the picture or mirror upward or downward atpleasure. And by means of levers A, A, and their pivots.` the face of the picture or mirror may be turned l to the right or to the left, as seen in Fig. 2,

and also moved toward or from the wall, as seen in Fig. 3. Thus the lnirror has a complete adjustability and it will remain sta.- tionary in whatever position it may he placed. It will therefore accommodate persons greatly varying in height, and may be adjusted for any light, whether daylight or gas-light.

My invention is especially adapted to hanging pictures, in galleries or other places, as it enables a picture to be brought into any desired position in regard to the light, from the window by day or from any artificial source by night.

My invention or adjuster is at once simple, cheap and durable.

I have tried several kinds of joints and have used a greater or less number of levers but I prefer the arrangement shown in the drawings, though I do not confine myself to the precise construction set forth so long as substantially the same result is produced.

I am aware that mirrors have been hung upon a crane stand, or on a bureau so as to admit of considerable adjustability.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United` States is:

Adjusting picture frames or mirrors to different positions and at different angles by means of a central hinge and levers suhtantially as described for the purposes set Orth.
