DISPLAY BOX Filed March 25, 1946 INVENTOR ROBERT VAN ROSEN,
ATTORNEY Patented June 7, 1949 UNITED PATENT 1o-F'FlcE DisPLAY cox Robert-Vanilosen; New York,- N. Y.-;assignor. to J. Makows'ky- Corporation, a corporation of New York AppIic'atioii Mar'cIiZE, 1946,-SiialNo. 656;855 senses. (o1. act-45.13)
. mental so that it or a group of them may be stored in any suitable place. The box has a cover which may beopened. to get access to the. inside of the box and also to discloseits contents. The arrangement may be suchthatJ-asthe coveris opened the display'memberinthe box-is raised at one portion of its-"areaiso as to fsorman inclined display field. At the same time, as the-cover is opened, the cover itself may sink'ataleast inpart into the bottom'of the-box andrecedebelow the lifted display member so thatthe-.coveribecomes relatively inconspicuous rand soute'ndsrto call attention to the article on. display. The'oover'may be hinged or pivoted to the bottoimof the'box. .So that an attractive appearance may be made in both open and closed position, the pivoting means may be on the inside of the cover where itisnot conspicuous. The supports for "the pivots on the bottom of the-box maybe placed 'nearzthe: inner sides of the. cover sides and where the. raised display member may tend to conceal them'when the box is open. 7
The box or parts of itrmaybe made of "metal; cardboard, plastic or the like,- and it may or may not be colored or coveredor lined'or both :by means of any suitable material desired.
The invention is not confined tospecificmeans fiOI' carrying out tl'iepurposes but may beembodied in various forms. In. order to fully disclose the invention, one embodiment of it is; shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figurel is a front elevation of a closed display box. Fig.2 is a side or end elevation of thesan' e. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the bottom nieinbr partially formed. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view-of the top member. Fig. dis a ianviewor the. display member. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross sectionon the line E6 of Fi 1. Fig. '7 is averticalcross section similar to Fig. 6. Ion a line a 1ittle-fi1rther.to;the right showing the coyerin open position. Fig.8 is a front-and-side elevation ofthe display ,bo'X showing the cover in openposition.
A base member. I I may be hollow but at least will be provided-at its rear side with-a recess or out out portion I2 extending substantially the entire width of the base. Eiitendingforwardly. fromth ends of the recess I2 may be provided narrow. -slots I3 and further toward the ciit rma'y be wider slots or openings [4. B'etweeneach pair of slots I3 and I4 may be a pivot bearing l5. As shown at the right of Fig.3 the pivot bearing "l5 may be carried by a strap or extension of thebottom member' which may consist of an-intermediate portion I6 which may be turned backuponithe base portion H to form a support for the portion I8 which may be turned upward in close juxtaposition'to the adjacent slot I3 as indicated at the leftof Fig. .3.
Howard the front of the bas'member Ihare more'or less parallel slots I9 leavingibetween' them bars .20 which may be engaged bystrapsi lnonsthe front edge of a display plate 22. The straps-1 2i may be curved about the bars 20.So'as1:tofdim hinge bearings for the display plate (see Figs. 6 and 7). As indicated i'nFig. 6 the display'plat 22 more or less covers the .base memberl l IOU. which it lies extending backward soas'tooverlie the cut out portion I2 and the slots but not extending sideways so far as to cover the narrower slots l3.
-'A cover member 23 is provided as shownzin detail in Fig. 4. The cover member is provided-with depending sides 24, which rest upon the;base member H when the cover is closed. Extending inwardly from the cover sides 24 are pivot members or pins 25 which engage and turninthe pivot bearingsIS. The cover continues forward at its rear end as indicated at'26 and is provided with 'extensionsor lugs =21 so placed as to nor= many lie intlieslots I4 and so underlie the' rear portion'of the display plateZZ as shown" in'Flgx-fi. The rear portion of the cover 23" and its sidewalls 24 is formed on'a'curve which may bea: circle drawn "about the'pivotpin '25-as a center. The pivotbearing I5 is raised above the basemem her i I distance somewhat less than the radius of the circle about the pin 25. Thus when'the coveris turned to :open position on itspivotsthe rear end of the cover-'23'and its side walls 24*tvill pass through the cut out paortion I2 and below the surface of the base member I I; leavlngextending upwardly only a; portion of the cover. At thesame timethe lugs 21 at their forward ends will engage the display plate 22 and turn it on its hinge IIJ-ZI to aniinclinedposition. asindicatedin Fig. 7, and so further concealing aportionpf the cover member 23. It *Will benoted thatin the openposition of Fig. 7 only a small portion of the cover will be visible so.tending.to place all attentionon theinclined display member-22 and any article displayed thereon.
.asrhe cover 23 turns its .side members will pass into'the narrower slots I3 which areas ranged below and in juxtaposition with the members l8 which carry the pivot bearing l5.
As the cover opens the extension 26 on it moves until the ends of the extension engage the bottom sides of the portion I! between the slots and thus form a stop for the movement of the cover. As shown in Figure 7 the cover is thus stopped when the lugs 21 are approximately vertical so as to give the maximum inclination to the display member 22.
The radius of the curve of the rear end of the cover may be approximately the distance from the pivot bearing IE to the rear wall of the out out portion l2. Thus when the cover is closed there may be no opening between it and the rear of the bottom member (see Figure 6) and as the cover turns open there may be no opening there and in its open position the cover may rest in substantial contact with the rear of the opening [2 (see Fig ure '7).
'It will be observed that the pivot 25 and its bearing I are within the cover and so concealed from the eye when the box is open as well as when it is closed. This aids in giving to the device an attractive neat appearance which may be highly desirable in a box which is to be used to display jewelry and like delicate and beautiful articles.
The device may be made of sheets of material suitably shaped or it may have its various elements cast or otherwise provided in appropriate shapes and sizes. Other changes and variations may be made without departing from the in vention.
