Description

May 24, 1949. J. NACHMAN FANCY TRIMMING STITCH Filed July 1, 1946 ZSnnentor JZz c'K Mc/zma/z Gttomeg Patented May 24, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FANCY TRIMMING STITCH Jack Nachman, Philadelphia, Pa.
Application July 1, 1946, Serial No. 680,808
2 Claims. 1
My invention relates to fabric and relates particularly to a method and means for creating an ornamental series of stitches which will produce the eye effect of binding.
Heretofore, bindings for ornamental goods have been made but it is a purpose of my invention to provide a series of threads sewn and arranged in such a manner as to create the effect of an ornamental binding.
It is, therefore, an object of my invention to sew and lay on a fabric a series of stitches as Well as a plurality of threads which give the eye appeal of a binding.
Other objects of my invention are to provide an improved device of the character described, that is easily and economically produced, and which is sturdy in construction.
With the above and related objects in view, my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully understood from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is an ornamental view showing a thread of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the lines 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring now in greater detail to the drawings embodying my invention wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts, I show a piece of fabric, generally designated as A, on which the effect of a binding is to be created to the eye and in which different ornamental designs may be made.
A thread I6 is laid in a zig-zag or sine-wave fashion upon the surface of the fabric A. Upon the surface of the fabric A and beneath the upper portion of the thread I6 is a tape or cord I2 laid in a straight line. Along each side of the tape or cord I2 is a series of stitches I and I4. Each of the stitches I0 and I4 hold a portion of the zig-zag thread I6 to the fabric A so that the zigzag thread is tacked to the fabric and a portion of the zig-zag thread I6 holds the tape or cord l 2 in contact with the fabric A.
It should be noted that with respect to the longitudinal central axis of the zig-zag thread I6 the design created is symmetrical, one portion being designated the upper portion and the other the lower portion.
The series of stitches I 0 is located adjacent the curved upper portion of the zig-zag thread I6 with the tape or cord located adjacent the stitches III and the stitches l4.
It is to be noted that the inlaid thread or tape i2 is held by spaced cross thread portions IBA, i613 and the other portions of the zig-zag thread H5 are tacked or sewn to the fabric by stitches II], M. A sewing machine may be altered to do the stitching, to lay the inlaid thread, and to lay the zig-zag or sine-wave thread in position.
symmetrically placed with respect to the longitudinal axis of the zig-zag thread Hi and at the lower portion of the thread I6 is a second tape, or cord, or inlaid thread 22 held by the portions 16A and IBB of the lower portion of the zig-zag thread I6 and between the parallel row of stitches 20 and 24. The second tape 22 with its complementary stitches 20 and 24 is similar in position to the tape I2 and the upper rows of stitches III and Id.
The color effect or a varied color effect can be created by making the row of stitches Ill and I4 of one color, I2 a second or a different color than the thread for the stitches, the zig-zag or sine wave thread I6 may be a third color or the same color as the other threads. The rows of stitches 20 and 24 may be made of different colors or they may be of a color similar to the stitches I0 and I4, thereby creating a novel and ornamental eiiect on the fabric.
Although my invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as being illustrative rather than limiting, since the invention may be variously embodied, and the scope of the invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim as my invention:
1. An ornamental tape effect created by a series of stitches wherein a zig-zag or sine-wave shaped thread is laid upon a piece of fabric, the upper and lower portions of said thread being held by a series of parallel stitches, and a straight tape or cord overlying the top of the fabric and lying beneath the upper and lower portions of said zigzag or sine-wave thread and between the plurality of rows of stitches at the upper and lower portions.
2. An ornamental tape effect created by a series of stitches upon a fabric wherein a zig-zag or 3 4 sine-wave shaped thread is laid upon said fabric, REFERENCES CITED plurality of straight tapes cords the upper The following references are of record in the portion of said thread lying upon ne of said r m f straight tapes, a series of straight stitches p e 0 t 18 patent.
