K. A. TERCHICK BABY GARMENT 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Fiied May 42, 1948 Patented May 24, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BABY GARMENT Kathryn A. 'iierchicln Venetia, Pa., assignor of one-half to Anthony W. Terchick, Venetia, Pa.
Appiication May 12, 1948, Serial No. 26,682
(Cl. 12S-284) 8 Claims. 1
This invention relates to babies garments and particularly to adjustable diapers having provisions to extend the life and utility of the diapers.
Most conventional diapers are so manufactured that their utility is shortened by the deterioration of only a portion of the garment, usually resulting in the discarding of unworn material. Further, the usefulness of the garment is more or less controlled by the increase in size of the child.
It is an object of my invention to increase the use of diapers by arranging for the elimination of the portion first worn but still retaining sufficient material to permit of continued use.
Another object is to provide a garment which is adjustable and Which will accommodate the continued increase in the sizey of the infant.
A further object is to provide a diaper which may be readily attached and removed from the infant, Vwithout the use of safety pins and other conventional securing means, and still `allow comparative freedom of the hands of the mother or nurse. Y
An additional object is to provide fasteners that may be quickly secured and arranged so that none will touch the body of the infant.
These and other objects will be apparent from the following description of the drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof andi a modification, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the diaper secured in its maximum size;
Figure 2 is a top plan view with the front and back portions slightly extended;
Figure 3 is an end elevation;
Figure 4 is a top plan View of the diaper in reverse unfolded position; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view of a modic'ation.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, the numeral l0 indicates the diaper,
-preferably made of a light weight cotton cloth generally used in the manufacture of such garments. The diaper is preferably cut from a continuous web of material as indicated in Fig. 4.
The garment is composed of three sections with the front and rear faces indicated at l2, I4, I6, I8, 20, and 22. Although not specifically shown in the drawings, the edges are bound or hemmed. The central portion l2 is provided with straight edges 24, i26, 28 and 30, and vcutout leg portions are shown at 32 and 34;
'In Figure 4 particularly, the two sections |l'2`f and `t6 are strengthened by a tape 3-6 sewed orl stitched at they fold. A plurality of snap fasteners 38 are secured on this tape which will serve as securingv andadj ustment means.
Similarly, the portion I6 is pro-vided with straight edges lill, 42, 44 and 46 with central cut-out vportions 48' and 5U. The third section Eil, lof a width less than the other two portions, is 4provided with straightv side edges 52 and 5W. The central portion l2- has short tapes `5`6 vand 58 secured at the top thereof and vcompanionsnap fastening elements '60, 62, 64 and 66' Yare secured thereon.
lln forming the diaper, the material is laid flat, kthe reverse faces of that indicated', as shown in Figure 4 with portion I8 nearest the folder face up'. `Portion 22', at the top, is folded over central vportion Ill so that portion Zil4 is face up: The bottom portion i8 is then folded so that portion f6 is then face up over the .other two portions.
The infant is then laid approximately centrally over the material with its legs outstretched to.- ward. .the folder. Thebottom or taped edge 3'6? is then brought between the infants. legs and the -tape ends 56. and 58 areA brought over and the proper fasteners Gil-6.2 and `64-g-iil'i secured to the appropriate kfastener element 38 on the tape 36. It will befappreciated that the central portions 68 will then lie between the legs of the infant. It can be further appreciated that :complete adjustment is provided by vthe plurality of fastening yelements 38 having cooperative Len-Y gagementwith'either of the fastener elements.
As the material' becomes worn through. re-y peated'washings, the portion 20 nearest the body of the infant will 'show the first sign of Wear; In order to remove this then objectionable material, aI cutting or pinking is made at the .location 'illA shown in. Figure 5. Obviously, the pin-king Wil-l preclude unravel-ing of the material. Despite theremoval ofthe third section, the garmentstillv has remaining utility for two sections will accom-y plish the objectives; of the garment and 'the feature of adjustment is not lost due to the remaval-of the worn portion.
IIn the modification, 'as shown in Figure 5'-, the garment may be made intwo sections. The portion 2li that -will eventually be eliminated is re'- movably securedv by `snap fasteners T2 on a tape 'Hlextending across the Width of'r the diaper. As in the preferred design, completeadjustmerit maybe `had 'through thel cooperative `engagement of the snap fastening elements on the tape extension 5S and 58 with those on the tape 36.
It is to be noticed that the fastening elements are arranged to prevent contact with the body of the infant.
I claim:
