Description

May 17, 1949. A. w. MCINTYRE HEATING DEVICE ADAPTED TO ELECTRIC RANGES Filed March 10, 1948 -zitti Patented May 17, 1949 HEATING DEVICE ADAPTED TO ELECTRIC RANGES Angus W. McIntyre, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Application March 10, 1948,
In Canada February 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in heating devices, more particularly to a heating unit adapted to electric ranges.
In a great many homes, some form of heating is required for the greater part of the year, and those homes that have no furnace outlet require some form of auxiliary heating system, and those that have a radiator in the kitchen face the same problem in the cool early hours of the morning during those months when the furnace is not in use.
My invention can either be built as part of a new range or adapted to existing full size or apartment model electric ranges.
Electric ranges are usually made to rest on a base called toe cove base of approximately six inches in height. It covers the entire surface of the stove except for a narrow free strip at the front thereof, the purpose oi which being to make it possible for the housewife to stand closer to the range for convenient working.
It is this supporting base' of the range which I propose tc use or convert, as the case -may be, into an economical way of heating the room in which the electric range is installed by means of a unit installed in part of the base ci existing ranges or sold as part of new ranges.
My invention consists of a heating device placed in the toe cove base of electric ranges as aforesaid, and it comprises one or more elements electrically heated and enclosed in a housing which itself is resting on an insulated plate on the bottom face of the base of the range.
A small blower, also part of the unit, draws air through openings provided in the back face of the base and blown through the housing over the heating elem-ents and finally out of the housing on to the floor through a grill. The blower is ac tuated by means of an electric motor also placed in the housing, the motor and the heating elements being connected to the electric writing of the stove in built-in units, or to the house circuit if added to an existing stove with a separate remote controlling switch, not shown.
The principal object of my invention is to provide means by which moderate heat will be supplied -in a, kitchen, at a low cost, and quickly when needed and without danger of iire as it often happens with ordinary iioor heaters.
Other objects of the invention will appear as I proceed with the description, and I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows the front elevation of an electric range; Figure 2 shows a sectional plan of the device through the heater and blower assembly taken at 2-2 of Figure 3; and Figure 3 shows a sectional elevation through the heater at 3-3 of Figure 1.
Serial N0. 14,013
(Cl. 21S-39) to similar parts K range into part of which I place the entire heating arrangement.
The housing l@ is made in two united sections, the front section being rectangular and containing the heating element l; the other or rear section il having substantially the form of a cone, the apex i9 of which being joined to the outlet of the blower Il by means of a iiexible coupling tube l. The blower is operated by a small motor 23 through drive shaft 28 and held in place by means of plate 2l! and base 2l.
The heating elements 'l members housing.
Numeral i5 represents the rear panel of the stove, and I5 designates the rear panel of the toe base. l'n rear panel l5', I provide air inlets i5". Numeral 22 shows the vertical separating wall in the stove structure; and !8 also shows a dividing plate between the toe base and the upper part of the range containing warming drawer I3, and l2 is the door of the' range warming closet.
ln the iront wall of the toe cove base opposite the part used to contain the heating unit, is a grill frame 5, and in that frame I provide a number of louvres S for directing heated air on the door of the kitchen.
l claim:
A heating are secured to angle secured to the side walls of the device in combination with the toe cove base oi an electric range, a housing secured in said base and consisting of two integral sections, one of said sections being rectangular and the other being funnel shaped and flexibly connected to a blower, angle members secured on the side walls of said rectangular section of the housing and supporting heating elements, a grill in the outer face of the base, said housing resting on an insulated plate, as shown and described.
