2 Claims.
This invention relates to machines for drafting textile fibres. In such machines there is a tendency for the selvage fibres in the slivers to spread out laterally, so that they are licked up by the top rolls, with resultant waste. This tendency is more pronounced in long-draft machines operating at higher speed and with high draft ratios.
It is the general object of my invention to provide an improved sliver condensing device by which the sliver is condensed or reduced side- 'Ways and is delivered in compact form to the next pair of. drawing rolls, and with condensed selvages.
My improved device is of simple construction and is economical to manufacture. It can be easily applied or removed from the machine and has been proved reliable and efficient in operation.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of my invention is shown in the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of parts of a drawing frame embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a partial plan view of said parts;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of my improved sliver condensing device; and
Fig. 4 is an end view thereof.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, I have shown parts of a drawing frame embodying back rolls if? and Illa, middle rolls ll, Ila, I2 and i221, and front rolls l4 and I la. Long draft aprons [6 are mounted on the middle rolls l2 and I20. and are drawn about guide bars I'.'. Saddle members 20 rest on the top rolls, and pressure is applied to said saddle members through a link it and pull rod 22 by a weight or spring not shown. All of these parts are illustrative only and may be of usual commercial type.
My improved sliver condensing device 36 ispreferably formed as a single piece of plastic or other suitable material and is shown in detail I 2 tween the notches 33 will be related to the spindle spacing of the machine on which the condensing device is used.
When in use, the condensing device is mounted as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and is entirely supported on two adjacent slivers S. The device is moved forward by the supporting slivers until the upward extensions 40 engage the front top roll Ma and the lower part of each end portion 3| engages the front bottom roll [4.
The bar 32 is so placed that the center of gravity of the device is below the tops of the notches 33, So that the device will remain upright when in use.
If one of the slivers breaks, that end of the device will drop slightly but only until its lug or spur 4| engages the associated apron Hi. The device 39 will continue to shift transversely with the remaining sliver and the notch 33 will be in position to receive the broken sliver when replaced.
The upward extensions 40 are long enough to be conveniently grasped but are not long enough to engage the clearer board commonly used in such apparatus.
The bar 32 is low enough to permit insertion of the device without disturbing the saddle members 20, and the device may be inserted and removed while the machine is in operation if so desired. The downwardly flared notches facilitate insertion of the device.
The device has been found satisfactory in use and greatly reduces waste, as well as producing more uniform roving. The sliver selvages are condensed and compacted and licking-up of stray fibers is almost entirely avoided.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. In a long draft apparatus having a pair of draft rolls and having a pair of aprons rearwardly adjacent thereto, in combination, a sliver condensing device positioned between said rolls and said aprons and normally engaging rear surfaces of said pair of draft rolls, said device being normally supported by the slivers only, and having rearwardly projecting lugs each engaging an apron and being supported thereby when the associated sliver is missing.
2. In a long draft apparatus having a pair of draft rolls and having a pair of aprons rearwardly adjacent thereto, in combination, a sliver condensing device positioned between said rolls and said aprons and comprising a plate of sheet 3 material having spaced end portions with a sliver-receiving notch extending transversely inward in each end portion from one longitudinal edge thereof, and said device having a bar con- 4 REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
