This invention relates to mechanism for drawing fibrous materials. In recent years, a so-called long-draft system of drawing cotton or other yarn has come into extensive use. In the earlier long-draft system, the roving was conveyed to the front drawing rolls of a spinning frame between two closely adjacent draft belts, which supported and confined the roving up to the bight of the front drawing rolls.
By the use of these drawing belts, it was found possible to give the roving very much more draft than could be done in the usual spinning frame using a plurality of sets of drawing rolls. With the long-draft system, the permissible draft sometimes ranas high as a reduction of twenty-five to one.
Long-draft systems have also been provided in which a single draft belt is used, in combination with more or less of the regular drawing and top rolls of a spinning frame. This single belt arrangement has been found to possess special advantages under certain operating conditions.
My present invention relatesparticularly to a long-draft system of the single belt type, it being the general object of my invention to provide an improved construction for supporting and tensioning the draft belt, together with devices for clearing the belt of dust or lint during the operation of themachine. v
My invention further relates to arrangements and combination of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a sectional end elevation of parts of a spinning frame embodying my lnvention; and
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of certain parts, looking in the direction of the arrow 2 in fieferring to the drawings, I have shown arts of a spinning machme comprising a rame 10 on which thread boards 11 and guides 12 are supported in the usual manner. Stands 14 are mounted on the frame 10 and support upper and lower front drawing rolls and 21, middle drawing rolls '22 and 23 and back drawing rolls 24 and 25.
The lower drawing rolls 21, 23 and 25 are positively driven in predetermined speed relations and the top rolls 20, 22 and 24 are comthe assoicated lower drawing rolls.
The top rolls are positioned by guide members or saddles 26, preferably formed as relatively adjustable bearing blocks, the upper block being mounted on a cross rod supported in bearings in the upper part of the stands 14. Weights (not shown) are provided for pressing the top rolls 20, 22 and 24 against the drawing rolls and the roving R drawn therethrough. The usual clearer roll 32 is mounted below the front drawing roll 21 and is supported in bearings in counterweighted arms 33.
'A draft-belt 40 passes over the middle lower drawing roll 23 and also passes around a guide-bar 42 mounted in fixed position 'be tween the drawings rolls 21 and '23. The draft-belt or apron 4O alsopasses around a guide pulley 44, mounted on a cross rod 45 and loosely rotatable in bearings in brackets 46 extending rearward from the stands 14.
A tension roll 50 has gudgeons pivotally mounted in hook-like bearings 51 formed in the lower front edge portions of side lates 52, which are joined together by a cross rame member or brace 53 and by a connecting counterweight portion 54. The plates 52 are provided with downwardly opening recesses 55 adapted to pivotally embrace the cross shaft 45 reviously described.
With t is construction, the counterweight 54 will press the tension roll 50 against the under side of the draft-belt 40 and cause the desired tension to be applied thereto. The tension roll 50 may be provided with a fabric or other suitable surface by which it is adapted to act as a clearer roll, removing dust and lint from the operative outer face of the draft belt 40.
An additional clearer roll may be. provided to engage the inside surface of the belt 40. The clearer roll 60 has gud eons 61 projecting from the ends thereof an engaging the upper front edges of the side plates monly leather covered and rotate freely with 52, the roll 60 resting by gravity on the inner face of the belt 40.
A carrier roll 65 of relatively small diameter is mounted in the front saddle blocks 26 and engages the draft-belt 40 directly above the guide bar l2.
Having described the details of construction of my improved mechanism, the operation thereof will be readily apparent. The roving R is fed through the usual traversing trumpet T to the back rolls 24c and 25, by which the roving is drawn downward from the creel at a desired rate.
The draft-belt 4.0 is positively driven by the middle drawing roll 23 and the roving is delivered from the back rolls to the middle rolls and between the belt 40 and the middle top roll 22. The middle drawing roll 23 is driven at higher speed than the back drawing roll and a certain amount of draft is thus obtained between the back and middle rolls. The rovingis then fed forward on the draft-belt and is firmly held between the belt 40 and the carrier roll 65 at a point closely adjacent the bight of the front rolls 20 and 21. These rolls rotate at a much faster rate than the middle rolls 22 and 23 and the major part of the draft takes place at this point.
The greatly reduced roving R is then delivered through the guide wire! 12 to the spindles (not shown). The tension rolls yieldingly engage the draft belt 40 and maintain a desired tension thereon at all periods vof operation. Furthermore, the tension roll 50 and the clearer roll act to remove all foreign substances from the surface of the guide pulleys 44;, tension rolls 50 and supporting plates 52 are mounted on the cross shaft 45 between each pair of adjacent stands or supports 14:. Longitudinal displacement of the cross shaft 45 may be prevented by collars (Fig. 2).
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish .to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than is set forth in the claims, but what I claim is 1. In a drawing mechanism for fibrous material, a drawing roll, a guide-bar, alower guide pulley mounted to rotate about a l'rxed axis spaced substantially below and relatively remote from the path of travel of sa d fibrous material, a draft-belt encircling said drawing roll, said guide bar and said lower guide pulley, a tension roll engaging the outer surface of said belt and positloned'ad acent said lower guide pulley, a supporting frame for said roll pivoted to turn about the axis of said pulley and a counterweight in said frame efl'ective to cause said roll to tension said belt.
2. The combination in drawing mechanism as set forth in claim 1, in which the tension roll is provided with a covering by which it is rendered effective to act as a clearer for said belt.
3. The combination in drawing mechanism as set forth in claim 1, in which a separate clearer roll is positioned by said frame substantially above said tension roll and with free movement by gravity toward said tension roll and into engagement with the inner face of said belt.
4. In a drawing mechanism for fibrous material, a drawing roll, a guide bar, a lower guide pulley mounted to rotateabout a fixed axis spaced substantially below and relatively remote from the path of travel of said fibrous material, a draft-belt encircling said drawing roll, said guide bar and said lower guide pulley, a tension roll engaging the outer surface of said belt and positioned adjacent said lower guide pulley, said roll having bearing gudgeons, a pivoted supporting frame forsaid tension roll mounted to swing about an aXis parallel to the axis of said lower guide pulley comprising side plates having forwardly projecting hook portions to receive the gudgeons in the ends of said tension roll, and a counterweight member connecting said side plates and exerting upward pressure on said hook portions and gudgeons.
5. In a drawing mechanism for fibrous material, a drawing roll, a guide bar, a lower guide pulley mounted to rotate on a cross shaft spaced substantially below and relatively remote from the path of travel of said fibrous material, a draft-belt encircling said drawing roll, said guide bar and said lower guide pulley, a tension roll engaging the outer surface of said belt and positioned adjacent said lower guide pulley, said roll having bearing gudgeons, a pivoted supporting frame for said tension roll comprising side plates having forwardly pro ecting hook portions to receive the gudgeons in the ends of said tension roll, and a counterweight member connecting said side plates and exerting upward pressure on said'hook portions and gudgeons, said side plates being provided with downwardly opening recesses fitting over said cross shaft and forming a pivotal bearing thereon for said supporting frame.
