Description

NTED STATS PATENT ormoni. ,y
SAMUEL RUST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LAMP FOR LIGHTING HOUSES AND OTHER kPLACES.
Specification of Letters Patent N0. 246, dated June 80, 1837.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL RUST, of the city of New York, co-unty and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps for Lighting Houses and other Places, and that the following is a full and correct description of said improvement as invented or improved `by me.
The nature of my invention or improvement in the above said lamp, consists of a cast metallic stopple used independent lof a screw with the tubetor socket to receive the wick Vinserted or made in it, which stopple is to be used in place of the usual screw andV cork stopple heretofore used in said lamp. The inside of the neck of glass or other lamps in which this stop-ple is used, must be ground or made true, in the manner of stoppered bottles, which is done with a very small expense and the stopple also turned or ground to tight; or, in vthat part of the stopple whlch enters the lamp, Va groove or recess is to be made to receive an elastic substance, such as thread cotton or other mate-rial; either of which modes does away with the complication and perplexity of the screw, and also Vfrom the swelling, contracting, and leaking of the cork; which improved stopple is particularly calculated for glass lamps.
This cast metallic stopple is made hollow and thin with a ange, shoulder, or projection around it for the purpose of covering over the edge of the glass `or metal top or neck, serving as a stop to prevent it from'pressing too hard or far intothe lamp; this stopple is turned or otherwise made true, and is calculated forA the round tube or other lamps; or, for S. Rusts patent rollei1 lamp, for which he obtained Letters Patent of the United States, dated the sixteenth day of December, 1835.
For further illustration the annexed drawings with the explanations are referred to as making a part of this specification. A, Figs. l and 2, is the metallic 'stopple in the lamp. B, Fig. 3 is the metallic stopple rep-r resented out of the lamp.
My invention or improvement andfwhat I claim in this patent .does not consist in a roller or ina flange, or in a tube, but it cons sists of- Y A cast metallic Stopple used independent of a screw, or of a cork, ground, or otherwise truly fit-ted into glassY or other lamps, and inserted the same as a cork, as aforesaid and as above'described, or in any other way ormanner that is essentially' the same and for which I request Letters Patent.
Witness by hand this twenty-sixth day of April A. I). one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven.
