LUBRICATING AND PACKING SHAFT Filed Sept. 25, 1945 fbwmw J. 0 ZQOURKE. F29. 2.
Patented May 10, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LUEEICATING AND PACKING SHAFT Edward 3. ORourke, Ozone Park, N. Y.
Appiication September 25, 1945, Serial No. 618,476
3 Claims. 1
This instant invention relates to lubricating and packing shafts, and the primary object of the invention is the provision of a waterproof and lubricated mounting for a rotatable shaft.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the class described in which the lubricant aids materially in rendering the container into which the shaft extends waterproof.
The invention is useful in furnishing a mounting means for the control rods of radio sets in watertight containers or used outdoors, for propeller shafts on small to medium-sized inboard motors, for any rod or shaft extending into a watertight container.
With these and other objects in view which will appear when the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is a detail end of one of the spacers forming part of the preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a detail side view of one of the washers;
Figure 3 is an enlarged diametrical section of the entire assembly;
Figure 4 is a detail view of the outer end of the p;
Figure 5 is a detail view of the inner end of the p;
Figure 6 is a detail end View of one of the locking collars.
Referring specifically to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate like or similar parts, 2 denotes a fragment of the Wall of a watertight container to which is welded at 3 the inner end wall 4 of a cylindrical drum 5, especially in the case in which the shaft to be described is intended to function as a control shaft of an outdoor radio set and to carry a hand knob.
The end wall of the drum is centrally apertured to receive the journal portion 6 of a shaft 1 terminating at its left-hand end in a threaded portion 8 integral with the journal part and extending through an aperture in the container Wall registering with the aperture in the end wall of the drum. An inner lock nut 10 is secured upon the shaft and bears with its inner end against the inner side of the container wall.
To the right of the journal portion the shaft carries a flange H. Within the drum are a plurality of spacing sleeves 12. The sleeve on the extreme left abuts against the inner side of the end Wall of the drum and with its right-hand end against a spacing disc [4 centrally apertured for the insertion of the shaft. Against the outer periphery of such spacing disc abuts the left-hand end of another sleeve which is separated from a third by a similar disc, and so forth. The sleeve to the extreme right abuts with its right-hand end against the inner side of an end cover I6 having a cylindrical flange l'l extending to the left and surrounding the open end portion of the drum and fastened to the same by welding It).
The flat portion of the cover is centrally apertured to journal a smooth shaft portion 6 which adjoins to the right of the second flange H and to the left of a threaded shaft part 8 with an outer lock nut Ill.
The entire housing is packed with grease, the weight of which varies with climatic conditions, the seasons, the speed of the shaft and the temperature characteristic of the surroundings in which the device is used.
The grease acts as a water seal and reduces materially the friction between the parts.
The spacing sleeves hold the washer in place even when the latter are subjected to pressure. The washers prevent the grease from being forced out under pressure. The two enlargements of the shaft and the locks cooperate in keeping the grease within the drum even under high pressure and in spite of high speed.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that the present invention is not confined to such specific embodiment, but may be otherwise embodied within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the following claims, and it will further be understood that a substantial range of equivalence is contemplated.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In combination with a watertight box having an opening, a shaft extending through the opening into the box, a drum having ends centrally apertured for the shaft and secured with one end to the box, a collar threaded upon the shaft and engaging the other end of the drum, a second collar threaded upon the shaft and engaging the inner side of the box.
2. In combination with a box having an opening in one of its walls, a shaft extending through the opening into the box and having a pair of spaced flanges, a drum having an end centrally apertured for the shaft and welded to the box Wall and bearing with its inner side against one of the flanges, washers centrally apertured in the drum, spacing sleeves for spacing the Washers, a cap welded to the open end of the drum and centrally apertured for the shaft and bearing with its inner side against the other flange, a pair of locking collars threaded upon the shaft, one bearing against the inner side of the box Wall and the other bearing against the outer side of the cap,;and=a lubricant in the drum.
3. In a waterproof, connection for end of 10 crankshafts and the like protruding from housings, the combination, which comprises a cylindrical casing open at one end and-having a centrally disposed shaft-receiving opening in the other, said end having a centrally disposed shaftreceiving opening positioned against and.v welded to the housing, a shaft having collars integral therewith positioned in the casing withbearing surfaces adjacent the collars, a closure on the open end of the casing/having, a centrally disi.p0Sed;,-shaftereceiving opening aligned with'the REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file or" 7 this, patent: i
