INVALID AND SURGICAL CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 246,652, dated September 6, 1881.
Application led November 29, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. BAILEY, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Surgical Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin that class of chairs which are made adjustable for surgical or other purposes 5 and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the various parts, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chair in a partially-inclined position and with the leg-rests extended laterally. Fig.
2 is a side elevation, with the upholstery re-I moved, showing the chair in a sitting position, and in dotted lines in an extended reclining position. Fig. Sis a bottom plan of the chairback, seat, and leg-rests extended, and with the frame removed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the sides of the frame or legs of the chair, secured together by the ties or girts a and braces b, all preferably made of iron. The lower ends of the legs are provided with casters c, and on top with upholstered arm-rests d. A segment, e, of iron, and provided with a segmental slot, h, is securely riveted to the rear leg and to the top, as shown.
B represents the frame for the back. This frameis pivoted att' to the frame A, andits lower end is pivoted at lcto the rear end ofthe seatframe C, and just in rear of the point L a rod, Z, passes through the back-frame and the segmental slots in the segments e. One end of this rodl is provided with a head or nut, m, and the opposite end with a lever-canna, by means of which the back and its attachments are locked in any desired position. pivoted to the bar t,whichis secured laterally to the seat frame, and near its rear end. To
the rear or under side of the legrest are se` which are journaled upon suitable short shafts or bearings projecting from each side of the seat-frame. The seat at its front is cut-away, as shown at d in Fig. 3, and this cut-away portion is fitted with a removable block, e', which may be upholstered to conform to the upholstering of the seat E. The leg-rests are constructed as described to facilitate surgical operations, and the removable block e will allow, if occasion require, thepatient under treatment to perform the operations of nature into a suitable vessel placed under the opening dis-` closed bythe removal of the block e.
In practice, the chair being in a sitting position, as shown in Fig. 2, the cam-lever is loosened and the chair-back depressed intoahorizontal position. This movement raises the back to the horizontal plane of the pivotal 'point t', projects the seat forward, and elevates it. In its forward movement the wheels c upon the side of the seat come into contact with the rear side of the cam b', which forces thelower ends of the'bars y forward, and this movement forces the leg-rest up to the plane of the seat; or a less depression of the back will give a reclining position at any desired angle, and the lever cam will lock the chair in any required position.
What l claim as my invention is 1. The combination, with the frame A, provided With the slotted segments c, of the back B, pivoted to the frame A, seat-frame G, pivoted at its rear end to the lower end ofthe back, rod l, passing through the back -frame and slots h, and lever-cam mwhereby theback and seat may be locked in any desired position, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the frame A, of the back B,pivoted thereto, seat-frame G,pivoted to the back, and provided with the rollers c', leg-rests r, r', pivoted to the seal: frame, and cam-bars y, pivoted to theleg-rests and to Iche 5 frame A, whereby the depression of lalle back will elevate the seat and leg-rests to the same horizontal plane with the back, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the seat-frame C, 1o having the rollers c', of the leg-rests 1^ rf, having lugs u u, bars s, each pivoted at its outer end to a,- leg-rest and at its inner end to the lateral bar t, rods fu, and cam-bars y, substantially as described, l and for the purpose set; forth.
