This invention relates to an extension clip or clasp for tie collars, and particularly to a clip capable of being adjusted to extend the length thereof.

. The main object of the invention is to provide an extension clip or clasp of the character indicated having a manually-adjustable nut for adjusting the length and extending the clip to fit various sizes of tie openings on collars.

Another object is to have such an extension clip or clasp which has collar-gripping or clasping means which retain their gripping character unaltered despite longitudinal adjustment of the clip as a whole.

A further object is to have an extension clip or clasp of this type in which the adjusting nut engages with two intermediate right and left hand threaded portions, while two other portions slidably engage with an intermediatelylocated guide member for maintaining the main clasp members properly aligned.

It is also an object to have such a clip or clasp upon which the adjusting nut may be ornamented to disguise its nature and enhance the appearance of the clasp as a result.

An ancillary object is to make a clasp or clip of the mentioned type which is thoroughly mechanical in nature but nonetheless as thoroughly ornamental in form and design.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in further detail as the specification proceeds.

In order to facilitate ready comprehension of this invention, the latter is illustrated on the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, and in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view of a tie collar extension clip or clasp made according to this invention and embodying the same in a practical form;

Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same tie collar extension clip or clasp;

Figure 3 is a longitudinal section taken on line 3-3 in Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a vertical section taken on line 4-4 in Figure 1;

Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view of a modification of the tie clasp;

Figure 6 is a vertical section taken on line 6-45 in Figure 5.

In the six views, the same reference numerals indicate the same or like parts.

It is well known among men that shirts and collars difier widely although they may apparently be of the same size, and particularly is this true of a tie opening upon the collars of these shirts. If we add to that the fact that ties also: differ, some requiring larger openings than others and actually being more bulky than others when tied, it is readily seen that the collar in which a tie is arranged may either have a wide opening originally or may be forced widely open by the type of tie used. On the other hand, the tie may be more or less thin and the knot thereof as a result will also not occupy any great space so that the tie opening in the collar upon which. it is arranged will perhaps not be very widely separated, one collar member from the other.

In View of the fact that the collar opening in. the front for accommodating the tie is thus vari-- able, it is simply a matter of common sense to have either a series of tie clasps and collar clips, etc., which are of series of different lengths, or else have one collar clip or clasp which is extensible by manually adjusting the same.

In view of the desirability for having such an extensible clip or clasp, I have found it feasible to construct such a device which is not only practical, but susceptible of considerable ornamentation and variation, as will now be specifically set forth.

In the practice of my invention, and referring again to the drawing, a, tie collar extension clip or clasp, generally indicated at I, mainly comprises a bracket member 8 which is substantially tubular in form and provided at the end thereof with a pair of substantially parallel, forwardlyprojecting arms 9, 9 through the apertures III, II] of which a pair of aligned clasp members II, II extend. The inner ends of these clasp members are threaded at I2, I2, the one with a righthand thread and the other with a left-hand thread, while upon these threads is mounted a correspondingly internallyright-hand and lefthand threaded nut I3 which may externally be smooth, knurled or ornamented in any manner desired. The outer ends I4, I4 of the mentioned clasp members II, II are bent rearwardly and. terminate in a pair of balls or knobs I5, I5. The mentioned clasp members II, II are preferably of round cross-section, making them suitable to. receive the threads I2, I2 already mentioned.

A pair of secondary clasp members I5, IE5 ofsubstantially square cross-section extend slidably into the previously-mentioned member 8 which serves as a guide for the same, and beyond the latter member 8 the secondary clip or clasp mem-- bers I6 are bent forwardly at II, II toward the first-mentioned clip members I I, II and soldered to the latter within the ends I4, I4 thereof at I8, I8. ence of the right and left hand threads on the inner ends of said clasp members; with, the result that the latter may extend as far as, indicated in broken lines in Figure 3, adapting the device to a collar with a very wide tie opening; As; thenut; l3 separates the front clasp members H, H, the rear or secondary clasp members IE, it are also separated due to the fact that they are soldered to the front clasp members and therefore slide in tubular member E to have correspondingmovement with the threaded members I], H which are directly engaged and moved by the nut l3. Any adjustment between the two thus shown in full lines and broken lines in- Figure 3 may be attained by rotation of nut it in either one direction or the other, as required. It is easily seen that the knob l5 and rear clasp mem ber or terminal H! at each end of thedevice constitute a collar-gripping jaw individually capable of gripping or clasping theend of a collar at the tie opening and retaining its position in relation thereto by friction therewith. It is likewise readily seen that no matter what the adjustment of the front and rear clasp-members It and It may be, the relations between the clasping ends and 19' of the device will remain exactly the same.

It has already been mentioned that the bent portions ll projecting forwardly from the rear clasp members it are soldered to the front clasp members it. This may, of course, include-brazing or welding or fastening thereto by any: means: known in the art. On the other hand, actual: fusing of metal for securing the forwardly-bent portions H of clasp members I6 against or with the front clasp member I! at each side is: not necessary, inasmuch as an outside metalband; or link may be. used as particularly shown in; Figures 5 and 6. In the last described form, the extension clip? or clasp is si iilar to that shown inrthe firstithree figures as well as in the section-of Figure awithl respect to the clasp members 2!; and; 26, as they: are similar to previously-described.clasp members tit and it, but the previously-described solderedportion l3 isreplaced by the mentioned ring or band 28. In both forms of the clip or clasp, it is; off course, possible to decorate thenut l3 and the forwardly-extending arms 9 aswellas the front clasp members 2! and thedevice may be partly made of precious metals or wholly made thereof or plated-therewith.

It is also true that in both forms the same operation holds true that rotation of nut 13 will cause not only the front clasp members to separate or approach each other within the nut, but also the rear clasp members 26 will either recede from each other or approach toward each other, depending on the direction of rotation of nut l3 and the corresponding movement of clasp members. 2L,

Manifestly, other variations may be resorted to and parts and features may be modified or used without others within the scope of the appended claims.

Having now fully described my invention, I claim;

1'. A tie collar extension clip or clasp including an elongated tubular guide member having a pair of mutually parallel arms rigidly projecting substantially at right angles from the ends toward one side thereof, there being apertures in both arms, a pair'of aligned front clasp members having their mutually-adjacent ends 1 extendingthrough the apertures in said arms and being? threaded with a right hand thread and a left hand thread'respectively, a rotatable elongated nut'correspondingly internally threaded with right hand and left hand threads mounted upon the thread ed ends of the front clasp members, outwardly-- extending and-rearwardly-bent port-ions upon the latter terminating in collar-engaging knobs or ends, a pair of rear clasp members of" substantially right-angular cross-section having aligned portions extending slidably into the ends of the elongated tubular guide member; a forwardlydirected portion upon the outerend of each of the aligned portions ofthe rear clasp members; means securing the forwardly-directedportion off each rear clasp member to the respectively adja cent front clasp membenand a rearwardly and, outwardly-directed portion extending from each forwardly-directed portion of said rear clasp membenterminat-ing in a collar-engaginghead-or Enid-181305641 111 juxtaposition to, the respectively adjacent collar-engaging knob of oneof saidfrontf clasp members for claspingthe ends of a collartherebetween. 3. A tie collar extension clip or clasp including an elongated tubular guide member having a pair of mutually parallel arms rigidly projecting substantially at right angles from the ends toward one side thereof, there being apertures in both arms, a pair of aligned front clasp members having their mutually-adjacent ends extending through the apertures in said arms and being threaded with a right hand thread and a left hand thread respectively, a rotatable elongated nut correspondingly internally threaded with right hand and left hand threads mounted upon the threaded ends of the front clasp members, outwardly-extending and rearwardly-bent portions upon the latter terminating in collar-engaging knobs or ends, a pair of rear clasp members of substantially right-angular cross-section having aligned portions extending slidably into the ends of the elongated tubular guide member, a forwardly-directed portion upon the outer end of each of the aligned portions of the rear clasp members, a ring or band encircling the forwardly-directed portion of each rear clasp member and the respectively adjacent front clasp member, and a rearwardly and outwardly-directed portion extending from each forwardly-directed portion of said rear clasp member terminating in a collar-engaging head or end disposed in juxtaposition to the respectively adjacent collar-engaging knob of one of said front clasp members for clasping the ends of a collar therebetween.
