Description

(M'odeL) 0. H. STARIN,
COMBINED SHOVEL AND ASH SIEVE, No; 246,568. Patented Aug; 30,1881;
/ 1 W ATTORNEYS- NY PETERS. Plwwumu n her. Wachmglou. my a UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICEQ CHARLES H. STARIN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-THIRD TO JOHN G. HARVEY, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED SHOVEL AND ASH-SIEVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,568, dated August 30, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. STARIN, ofBrooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Shovel 'and Ash-Sieve, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved coal-shovel which can also be used to sift ashes and separate them from IO the cinders.
The invention consists in a slotted or perforated shovel with a plate pivoted to each longitudinal edge of the bottom, which plates can be rais d to close and cover thepert'orated or slotted bottom by means of a wire pivoted in the handle and provided with an extension, which can be depressed very conveniently by the person holding the shovel.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved shovel and ash-sieve. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The shovel A is provided with a slotted or peifoiated bottom, B, to each longitudinal edge of which a plate, 0, of half the width of this bottom is hinged or pivoted. A wire, D, is pivoted in the handle E, and the lower end of 0 this wire is bent transversely under the plates 0. The upper end of this wire is bentupward to form a lever, G, above the handle, and the end H of the upper part of the wire is to form a stop or check, which rests against the handle E, and prevents the endF of the wire and the plates 0 from dropping too far. The lever Gris pressed against the handle E, whereby Application filed July 1, 1:181. (Model.)
the plates 0 are raised up against the bottom B and close the perforations or apertures of the same. The shovel can now be used to shovel the ashes out of the stove. If the lever G is released, the end F of the wireD and the plates (J drop, as shown in dotted lines in Fig.2. Iftheshovel isthen vibrated orshaken, the ashes will drop through the perforations 5 or slots, and the cinders remain in the bottom B, and can be thrown into a suitable receptacle, and in this manner all the ashes can be sifted by the shovelful.
The shovel can he made of any desired size, o and can be made for family use as well as for use in coal-yards, &c. It can also be used for sifting sand, gravel, cement, minerals, &c.
Having thusdescribed my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 5 en t- 1. The combination, with the shovel A, having a slotted or perforated bottom, B, of the plates 0 C, hinged or pivoted to the bottom, and ofa device for raising these plates against the bot-tom, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the shovel A, having a slotted or perforated bottom, B, of the plates 0 G, hinged or pivoted to the bottom, and wire D, pivoted in the handle E, and having its lower end bent to cross below the plates 0, and its upper end-to form a lever, Gr, above the handle, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
